Chapter 267: Interrogation 101 (3)

Vex hung from the prison cell wall, her muscular arms and legs restrained by a dozen impossibly thick chains, each seemingly forged to hold a young troll in place. But even these formidable restraints weren’t enough to break her.

The chains had been enchanted to draw any heat her body generated to ensure her body was numb. This ensured that she didn’t make any sudden movements, and the coldness of the room kept her in check.

But even all that wasn’t enough. Vex was even gagged with a bloody cloth stuffed into her mouth. Even her eyes had been covered, so she didn’t know who was responsible for her relentless pain and suffering.

Her open wounds and torn clothes were the proof of DRA’s brutality. They were hell-bent on breaking her for answers and pulled all the stops to make that happen.

Despite using every method of torture the DRA could think of, Vex remained silent. Thankfully, the people seemed to have understood they wouldn’t be able to make her speak and left her alone.

Although Vex didn’t give in, she was still affected by all the torture. Her body ached all over. Every muscle in her body screamed in agony. Moreover, she hadn’t had water or food in over a day. As such, her throat was parched, but there was nothing she could do to ease the pain.

Suddenly, she heard another pair of footsteps approaching the cell. The door creaked open, and a guard stepped inside. She knew it was a guard because of the thudding sound that his heavy boots made on the stone floor.

"Still not talking, huh?" the guard sneered, pulling the gag out of her mouth. "You think you can hold out forever? We’ll see about that."

The man grabbed a bucket of water and threw it over her, the icy liquid shocking her already cold and battered body. She gasped for air and opened her mouth, hoping some water would drop into it.

But the man used the opportunity to grab her tongue, slowly pulling on it. Although Vex couldn’t see it, she felt something warm near her face. The man probably had some fire-related ability and was using it for something.

"Since you’re hell-bent on not speaking," the man said with a twisted smile. "You won’t mind if I burnt a hole through it, right?"

Vex flinched at the implication but smiled the next moment as if daring the man to do it.

"You’ve got guts, I’ll give you that," the guard said, letting go of her tongue. "But guts won’t save you. Sooner or later, everyone breaks."

A moment later, he leaned in close, his breath hot against her ear. "Tell us what we want to know, and this can all stop."

"Oh... is this one of... your twisted fantasies?" Vex replied, her voice hoarse. "Can’t blame you. Little weaklings like you always seem to have a thing for bondage."

Vex couldn’t see it, but the man’s face twisted in anger as he slapped her, only to hurt himself. She laughed at the man’s cry, prompting him to shove the cloth back into her mouth and secure it before he turned and left the cell, slamming the door behind him.

However, as he was leaving, he saw the Executive Director Rick heading inside along with Adrian. Wondering what the two were up to, he decided to stay back for a moment.

"Ah, Nathaniel," Rick said when he noticed the man. "Adrian, this is our interrogation specialist, Nathaniel Greene, and Nathaniel, this is-"

"Adrian Fenrir," Nathaniel nodded, offering his hand to Adrian. "I don’t think there’s anyone in this building who doesn’t know him."

Adrian shook Nathaniel’s hand before walking inside. Rick and Nathaniel followed behind.

"Wow, you did quite a number on her," Adrian mumbled, remarking on Vex’s condition.

"As you might know, this isn’t a job for the weak," Nathaniel replied, sounding proud of his work. "These things tend to happen-"

"And you have no result to show for it," Adrian politely interrupted the man. "Could you open the cell?"

Nathaniel looked at Rick, who nodded. Although he didn’t appreciate Adrian’s tone, there was nothing he could do if Rick were on his side. Begrudgingly, he opened the door, allowing Adrian to enter the cell.

’Let’s see what your loud mouth is capable of, Fenrir.’ Nathaniel thought.

Nathaniel had conducted countless interrogation sessions, but never in his life had he met someone like Vex. No matter what he did, she wouldn’t utter a single word.

In his mind, if someone with extensive experience like him could fail to make her speak, then there was no way someone like Adrian would be able to make her answer. That’s why he waited there, to rub Adrian’s inevitable failure into his face.

Adrian, on the other hand, wasn’t worried at all. After all, unlike the DRA, he had a secret weapon capable of making even the most stubborn people talk... as long as certain conditions were met.

<Master, her magic resistance is abysmal. We can proceed as planned.>

’That’s music to my ears.’

With that, Adrian moved to undo her blindfold when Nathaniel yelled, asking what he was doing. Adrian calmly looked back and placed a finger on his lips, advising the interrogation expert to shut it.

Nathaniel was left dumbfounded. He looked at Rick, hoping he would say something, but Rick only repeated Adrian’s gesture.

"You have your turn to make her talk," he said. "Now, stay quiet and let him work."

Nathaniel was in the mood to argue back but bit his tongue. He would get all the opportunities to laugh once Adrian failed.

With that, Adrian undid the gag as well and stood in front of Vex. She blinked repeatedly, her eyes struggling to adjust after being closed for over twenty-four hours. But the moment her gaze settled on Adrian, the world seemed to come to a standstill.

"You..." Vex snarled, prompting Adrian to smile.

"It’s always good to meet a fan," he replied. "Now, if you will answer to my questions-"

"Like hell, I’m telling you anything!" Vex yelled. The chains binding her rattled as she tried to rip them off.

"Oh, you will," Adrian mumbled, his eyes glowing red. "Who sent you to kill Felicia?"

"..."

Vex’s face contorted. Even though she didn’t have magic resistance, she was still trying to fight through Adrian’s [Illusionary Eyes] ability. It went to show how much loyalty she had for Maria.

But Adrian’s magic proved too powerful. With a defeated gasp, the truth slipped from her lips.

"Lady... Maria..." she confessed. "She sent me and Charles to kill Felicia... and frame you..."
