Chapter 127: Chapter 127: Evergreen Heights
Henry nodded quickly, forcing a small smile. "Of course, Adriana. I understand."
Adriana bit her lip. She didn’t want to leave things like this. She reached for his hand, squeezing it gently.
"Thank you for understanding," she whispered.
Henry looked at her, his eyes softening.
"You don’t have to thank me," he said. "I’ll wait for you, Adriana. No matter how long it takes."
Adriana’s heart skipped a beat. She smiled, feeling warmth spread in her chest.
"Goodnight, Henry," she said.
Henry smiled back, giving her hand one last squeeze before letting go.
"Goodnight, Adriana."
Adriana left, but in between, she would turn around and watch him.
Henry would flash a gentle smile in her direction.
Once Adriana left completely, he gave one last look at the skyscraper.
Henry drove home, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly.
The smile he had given Adriana was long gone, replaced by a smirk of satisfaction. He had played his part well.
When he pulled up in front of his house, he sighed.
It wasn’t much—paint peeling off the walls, a broken fence, and an old, rusty mailbox hanging by a thread.
The inside wasn’t much better, but at least it was home.
As soon as he stepped inside, he saw his mother and younger sister sitting on the worn-out couch, watching a soap opera on the small TV.
They turned their heads toward him, their eyes lighting up when they saw him.
"Henry! You’re home!" his mother said, sitting up straight.
"You look tired, honey. Come, sit down."
His sister, Lucy, scooted over to make room for him.
"Did you eat? Do you need anything?" she asked sweetly, her big brown eyes full of fake concern.
Henry chuckled and plopped down beside them. He stretched his legs out and leaned back, pretending to be exhausted.
"I’m fine, really," he said, then looked at them with a mischievous grin. "But I have some good news."
His mother and sister leaned in eagerly.
"I got five thousand dollars," Henry said, keeping his voice casual. "And guess what? No IOU."
His mother gasped, covering her mouth in shock. Lucy’s eyes widened, then sparkled with excitement.
"No IOU?" his mother repeated. "Are you serious?"
Henry nodded, enjoying their reactions. "Completely serious."
Lucy clapped her hands together, beaming. "Finally, Henry! You found a rich heiress! Who is she?"
Henry smirked, thinking about the residential area.
"Her name’s Adriana. She lives in Evergreen Heights."
His mother and sister both gasped again.
"Evergreen Heights?!" his mother exclaimed. "Are you joking?"
Lucy whistled in amazement.
"That place is crazy expensive. One apartment there costs, like, 1.7 million dollars!"
Henry nodded, pretending to be impressed.
"Yup. And her father? He must be loaded. Probably making at least twenty million a year to afford a place like that."
His mother leaned back, shaking her head in awe.
"I knew you were smart, Henry, but this... this is genius."
Lucy grinned.
"You did good, big bro. So, what’s next? Are we meeting her? Maybe we can start planning how to—"
"Relax," Henry interrupted, laughing.
"Everything has to go step by step. She trusts me now. That’s all that matters."
His mother and sister nodded in agreement.
"But brother...what if she knew that you were lying to her?" Lucy asked worriedly.
Henry chuckled, leaning back against the couch. He stretched his arms, feeling completely at ease.
"She won’t find out," he said confidently. "She’s too trusting. Too soft."
Lucy still looked a little unsure.
"But what if she does? What if she realizes you’re just using her for money?"
Henry smirked. "Then I’ll make her believe she’s wrong."
His mother laughed softly, patting Henry’s arm.
"That’s my boy. You always know what you’re doing."
Lucy sighed but nodded.
"I guess you’re right. But still, be careful. If her dad is that rich, he might have people watching over her. You don’t want to mess with the wrong people."
Henry rolled his eyes.
"Please, Lucy. She’s just a spoiled rich girl who wants to feel like she’s helping someone. Her dad doesn’t care about her love life. If he did, he’d never let her date a guy like me."
His mother nodded in agreement.
"Rich people are too busy making money. They don’t have time to worry about who their daughter is dating."
Henry grinned. "Exactly. As long as I keep acting like the ’perfect’ boyfriend, everything will go smoothly."
Lucy twirled a strand of her dark hair around her finger, thinking.
"So, what’s the next step? Are you going to ask for more money?"
Henry shrugged.
"Not yet. If I rushed, she might get suspicious. I’ll wait a little. Maybe tell her some fake story about my ’struggles.’ Then, when the time is right, I’ll ask for more."
His mother clapped her hands together.
"Smart boy! That way, she won’t even realize she’s being tricked."
Henry laughed. "Exactly. By the time she does, it’ll be too late."
Lucy giggled. "I bet she’ll even thank you for ’letting’ her help."
Henry smirked. "She already has."
The three of them shared a laugh, completely relaxed.
Then, Lucy sat up suddenly.
"Hey, Henry... what if—just saying, what if—you actually start to like her?"
Henry froze for a second. Then, he laughed.
"Like her? Don’t be ridiculous. She’s just a means to an end. Not to mention people like her don’t deserve to be loved.
She is born with a golden spoon in her mouth. The god loves. Since there is someone powerful than me who loves her, then it is not my concern to love her."
Lucy shrugged.
"I’m just saying. Sometimes, people catch feelings without realizing it."
Henry shook his head.
"Not me. I know exactly what I’m doing. And I know exactly what I want."
His mother smiled proudly. "And what you want is a better life—for all of us."
Henry nodded. "Exactly. And thanks to Adriana, we’re one step closer."
.....
Aurora watched everything from her distance.
She saw Adriana getting off from Henry’s bike and Henry trying to kiss Adriana.
