Chapter 318: Fixing past mistakes (3)

On the Blackthorn estate, Josephine prepared her things she wanted to start moving to her home. She stood back as the maids and guards aided in placing her things on a cart and inside a carriage.

"You don’t have to move so fast," Selene said.

"Fast? This is very little of what I own. The deal was that I would wait for the attacks to be over, and now they are over. I need my own space, Selene. As fun as this was, I cannot completely do as I want here," Josephine said, looking forward to being the one making rules.

"I understand that, but I worry about you being alone," Selene said, stepping to the side as more of Jopsehine’s belongings came outside.

"Alone?" Jopsehine chuckled, humoured by what Selene said. "I will not be alone. I have plenty of friends who are looking forward to having my own home. They have not come here, so they wouldn’t bother Xavier. I also have my family."

Josephine was never going to be alone.

"Besides," Josephine continued to say, "Whenever I get bored, I will come here to see you. As long as I am still invited, of course. My departure needs to happen, but I am happy you want me to be close. I would have lost my mind if Nathaniel’s mother stayed so long."

"I enjoy your company. Sadly, everyone is leaving," Selene said, thinking of her parents, who left town already. "I will be happy to look forward to visiting your home. It gives me reason to get out of the estate."

Josephine was curious about who else was leaving, but there was something else she needed to address.

Josephine held Selene’s hands. "With Vivienne gone, you can be more comfortable attending gatherings. I can take you to a few if you want. Those women won’t be so fast to attack you to please Vivienne since she is no longer here."

Truthfully, Jospehine believed many of them would try to stick to Selene’s side now that Darius was gone and there wasn’t anyone who openly challenged Xavier as much as Darius did.

"That is kind of you, but I didn’t stop attending gatherings or any social events because of what Vivienne was doing. I didn’t have any time for it, and there were so many dangers around. I do plan to attend some with Francesca," said Selene.

Selene was happy to hear that Francesca was staying in town with her husband now that all the attacks were settling down. There was still a small chance Francesca might leave if the tension between humans and vampires got worse, but she was staying for now.

Josephine released Selene’s hands. "That’s good to hear. Xavier can stay inside all he wants, but you should go out to have some fun. You should attend one of the night plays with me. It is always fun."

Selene smiled and nodded her head, but she didn’t intend to attend a play with Josephine. When she didn’t want to attend with Xavier, how could she go with Josephine?

Josephine saw right through Selene’s smile. "You don’t want to come, and that’s fine. Are you coming with me to see my home, or are you standing here waiting for Xavier to return?"

"We should all go together to see your home. There is a visitor," Selene said, looking ahead at the gates.

"That would be husband," Josephine said, recognising the carriage. "He has come to bore me with his words again. They are to send him off."

Despite what Josephine instructed the butler to do, she was curious about what Nathaniel had to say.

Selene couldn’t help noticing how much Josephine stared at the gates. "You know, I can oversee what the maids are doing while you go and speak to him. I will not judge you for wanting to speak with him. It is evident that you still love him."

"But I would be going against what I said. There are only so many times that I can go around in circles with Nathaniel. Hopefully, this will be the last," Josephine said.

Against her better judgment, Jopsehine made her way down toward the gates.

Despite how their talk would go, Jopsehine was pleased to see that Nathaniel was still standing. That he hadn’t done something foolish during the night Darius and the demons were running around to get himself killed.

"What have you come for, Nathaniel?" Josephine asked.

"To see that my wife is well. I believe he will keep that woman safe, but I cannot say the same about him keeping you safe. Did you want me to be a bad husband who doesn’t check on you?" Nathaniel questioned.

"No, I wanted you to be a good husband who came after the attacks were over. It is over a day later, Nataniel. What hole have you crawled out of?" Josephine inquired, keeping her distance. "If you will say the same things as before, then leave."

"Enough of this game, Josephine. It is time for you to come home," said Nathaniel.

This had gone on long enough, and now, Nathaniel was tired of it. It made no sense for Josephine to be away from her husband for this long.

"You have made me miss you dearly. Your plan has worked, and now it is time for you to come back to where you belong. How long do you plan to stay here? I have realised my mistakes," said Nathaniel.

"Have you?" Josephine asked, not believing he did. Nathaniel was only saying what he believed she wanted to hear. "I don’t believe you. I fear that if I return with you, I will go back to you getting involved in Xaver’s marriage and caring only about the Blackthorns."

"Neither one of those things can happen since my father has threatened me not to meddle in their marriage. She is related to the Everharts-"

"So now you finally see some worth in her," Jopsehine finished for Nathaniel. "You are something special. You aren’t stopping not because you realise that Xavier and Selene are us many years ago, but because your father told you to."

It was something Josephine was used to, but seeing Nathaniel in front of her now, Josephine was hopeful that he would wake up and admit his wrongdoings.

"You shouldn’t care that she is an Everhart, and it shouldn’t have taken your father to make you stop. It will always be about what you think the Blackthorns need," Josephine said, confirming once more that she couldn’t be with him now.

"We are not the same as those two. Your family is well-respected amongst purebloods. I am tired of the fighting," Nathaniel said, already annoyed with their talk.

"And I am tired of getting my hopes up with you," Josephine replied.
