Chapter 315: Change (2)

"I have not come here to fight with you, Lord Blackthorn. I am only asking questions which are important to clear your name if you had no part in killing the king," said Eugene.

Eugene trusted that Xavier would be so crazy as to attack the town guards. A fight wasn’t what he came for, so he had to keep Xavier calm.

"You suggesting that I might have been having an affair with the queen is fighting words for me. Anything which can affect my marriage is a danger I must get rid of. Like always, you have come here with no evidence," Xavier said, opening up the gates.

"I must look into everyone who had issues with the king. It is nothing personal," Eugene said, but he couldn’t convince himself.

As soon as he heard the king was killed, Eugene first thought of Xavier. It became quite well known that Darius wanted Selene and given the horrible past between the two men, it made sense to come to Xavier’s home.

"I wish I could believe that it was nothing personal. I have allowed this nonsense to go on far too long. It shouldn’t need to be said, but it turns out you are not smart enough to know this. Do not come to my home unless you have evidence that I have done what you accuse me of," Xavier said.

Xavier continued, "I will not be so kind as to let you leave after you bring this trouble to my home next time. Go from before me while I am letting you get away in one piece."

"There’s no way for you to kill us unless you have holy weapons. Do you have holy weapons? You are not allowed to have holy weapons, Lord Blackthorn. They must be sent to the palace," Eugene said, hoping he had something to take Xavier in for.

"There are other ways to kill you without a holy weapon. Ripping your head off is a good start. You have now gotten back to your place leading the guards. I advise you to hold onto it. I have no more time for this," Xavier said, turning around to go back inside.

The next visit from Eugene would not have much chatter since it would be time for Eugene to die.

Eugene watched as Xavier walked away from the gates. He could do nothing for now since it was agreed upon by others that the queen took revenge on her husband.

Still, Eugene was going to look into what happened to Gabriel. Why did he suddenly disappear, and where was his wife?

"We shall leave for now," Eugene said, deciding to return to the palace to get more answers.

Hours later in the palace, Natalie paced back and forth as she waited for news of who would be the next king.

She could not celebrate that from her little group with Vivienne and Juliana, she was the only one to live since Darius was dead.

Natalie had no one to support her inside the palace with Darius gone. What would become of her?

Natalie touched her belly.

Her unborn child should guarantee her something. All her efforts to enter the palace as a woman of the king shouldn’t be for nothing.

Natalie wouldn’t allow it.

"Why are they taking so long?" Natalie questioned her maids. "It must be someone from his side."

Natalie remained hopeful that someone from Darius’s family would become the new king. Then, it was only fair that she was allowed to stay in the palace.

’I will get what is owed to me,’ Natalie thought, trying to keep herself in a positive space.

She had not put up with Darius for so long just for it to end like this.

Natalie stopped pacing when the doors opened and members of the five families walked out. She searched for someone who would tell her some good news, but there was no one she was close to.

Natalie’s only ties to the five families were Vivienne and Darius, but now, they were both gone.

"Who is the new king? I must know. Lord Blackthorn," Natalie said, grabbing Xavier’s arm when he showed up. "Who is the king? What will become of me?"

Xavier pushed Natalie’s hands off his arm. "If I were you, I would leave before Vivienne’s family comes out. You have no place here."

Natalie wasn’t going to leave until she knew who was king. "I only want to know who won."

"I am your king now," Michael announced as he stepped out. He couldn’t stay another second inside to listen to Vivienne’s father be upset that he lost control of the throne. "Is there something you must ask me?"

Natalie couldn’t believe that Michael won over everyone else. Why was he picked to be king?

Xavier walked away since the talk had nothing to do with him. He had done his part and had no reason to stay in the palace or to visit for a while. He would get his news from Isaac, who was going to lead the court as promised by Michael.

"What will become of me? I am carrying the king’s child," Natalie said, forcing Michael’s hand to touch her small belly. "The king has acknowledged the child as his."

Michael pulled his hand back. "No one can deny that you are carrying the former king’s child since he acknowledged it. However, there is no place for you in the palace. We have not decided what to do with you, but you will likely be under the care of Darius’s family."

"No," Natalie replied, shaking her head. "I will not create any trouble for you if you allow me to stay in the palace. I will keep my head down and raise my child quietly. That is all that I am asking for."

"Unfortunately, it is not up to me to decide. That child might possess the same abilities as Darius, so his family will want to keep the child close. You don’t get to decide. You weren’t his queen, but rather, a mere mistress," said Michael.

Natalie should have left the palace long ago, just like he told Juliana to. Now Natalie was going to be taken away by Darius’s family and not treated well since her family name had no power to it.

It was unfortunate that Vivienne’s daughter would be treated well while Natalie’s child would be forgotten. It wouldn’t matter if Natalie were to have a boy. Darius’s family cared about power, and Natalie had very little to get their attention.

Natalie would be lucky if they gave her a home and enough money to stay out of their sight.

"You should do as Lord Blackthorn suggested and leave before you are seen by Vivienne’s family. Gather your things and prepare to leave with Darius’s family. I wish you well," Michael said, leaving Natalie’s side to find some answers about where Morgana ran off to.
