Chapter 314: Change (1)

Selene spent the rest of her time listening to what her parents did during their time hiding away, and also shared stories of her life with Xavier.

It was a well-spent day with the expected separation no longer worrying anyone. Now that they had all sat down and spoken, it felt like they had never parted from each other.

Selene saw the departure as her parents going on a trip to enjoy themselves, and she would soon be with them.

Selene helped her parents to pack and was gifted a necklace belonging to her mother from Zephyr.

Seeing the necklace, Selene knew her grandfather had taken it back from one of the Harrisons, which meant they might not be alive anymore.

Selene and Xavier returned to the estate by nightfall, going right to bed since they had been busy all day.

The next day, Selene woke early to oversee the work the maids were doing to distract herself from her parents’ leaving.

"You’re going to tire yourself out if you keep this up," said Xavier.

"This is nothing. Winter will soon be upon us, so I think it is time we change up the decor a bit. You had so many decorations in storage. Do you mind if I take down some of the black decor and put up the white ones?" Selene asked.

Xavier looked at the black drapes. "White will make the estate appear inviting. The black helps to keep guests away."

"I won’t change all of it. Besides, no one gets beyond your gates to be scared by the decor you have. Is it that you want to scare your mother? If it is, you don’t need to, since she is preparing to leave again," Selene shared.

With the attacks seemingly over, Josephine was ready to leave the estate so she no longer intruded on the couple’s time.

"I will be going with her to see her new home. She is planning to have dinner there to celebrate. You cannot stop her this time," said Selene.

Xavier had no intentions of stopping his mother. The deal was that she should wait for the attacks to die down.

With Josephine away, they didn’t have to be so secretive about their interest in having a child.

"So," Xavier said, holding Selene’s hand. "Is it my day again?"

"It is quite late, so you have missed many hours. I also overheard you needed to go to the palace. You are not going?" Selene asked, curious what it was for.

"I am going a little later. The palace cannot be without a king for long, so the vote will happen today, and by night, it shall be announced who will rule. Michael earned himself many supporters after he helped clean up Darius’s mess," said Xavier.

"They are moving on from Darius quite fast. I thought it would take days before they talked of selecting a new king. It is good that the town is moving on. I only hope that you will not be suddenly voted as king," Selene said, since it would bring problems they didn’t need.

"I will not be voted king," Xavier said, certain of it. "If they value their lives, they should not think of voting for me. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if my grandfather tried to do it. I have other things I must focus on, like our plans."

Selene knew right away what he meant. It would be even more hectic if they were to be voted king and queen while trying for a child.

"It is important that we keep ourselves familiar with each other, so it won’t be long before we have good news. I am owed a day, and I intend to make good use of it. I know that you have cleared a room near our own," Xavier revealed.

Selene had plenty of space in the private room given to her, so it couldn’t be that she wanted the room for herself.

"I don’t know what you speak of," Selene said, avoiding Xavier’s gaze.

Xavier placed his hands where he would trap Selene against his body. "Had I known that you would be this excited, I would not have kept you waiting so long. For how long have you thought of having a-"

"Harold," Selene spoke over Xavier before he revealed too much.

"The town guards are here to have a word with Lord Blackthorn," Harold said, turning to his right so he wouldn’t see what he shouldn’t.

"We will be right there shortly. Thank you," Selene said, placing some space between herself and Xavier.

"We? You are not going to see them," Xavier replied. "You should get back to what you were doing while I send them off. Also, think about the day you intend to give me again."

"Harold, come with me," Xavier said, leaving Selene’s side. "This will be quick."

Xavier went out to the front doors and down to the gates, where Eugene waited for him.

"You again. I thought there was another face leading the town guards," Xavier said, pretending to search for Gabriel.

Eugene wasn’t falling for Xavier’s trick. "I cannot be replaced for long, and do not act surprised, Lord Blackthorn. Something tells me that you know why Gabriel has disappeared. Luckily for you, that is not what he came for. The king is dead."

"Is this what has become of the town guards? Going around to share news? I know that the king is dead. Do not smile," Xavier said, noticing how Eugene reacted. "The palace shared the news with all five families. It is expected that we are the first to know."

Eugene couldn’t argue with this since it was true that the palace would alert the Blackthorns.

"There is a vote for a new king today, so I know all the details about the king’s death. I was told that the queen killed him. Unless I have unknowingly changed my appearance, then I am not the one you should be questioning," said Xavier.

Eugene believed Xavier had a hand in the king’s death, but he had no way to prove it. All signs pointed to the queen being the one to kill her husband, and since the king had locked her away hours before, there was good reason to kill him.

Still, Eugene knew Xavier had done something.

"It is true that the queen had some role in killing the king. I am told that you once had a close relationship with the queen. Is that over with-"

"If you are going to say that I had an affair with the queen even while I am married, I suggest you prepare yourself to fight. I will kill you if you finish that sentence," Xavier said, ready for a fight.

The Blackthorn guards prepared themselves to defend Xavier.

The consequences of killing the guards weren’t a concern at the moment.
