Chapter 299: Panic (1)

"Are all the doors closed? None of them is to remain open. We cannot take any chances," Selene said, walking around to see the process the maids and guards had made.

The estate was now on lockdown with Selene overseeing all that was done to protect her home. All of the servants had gathered inside to be safe from the dangers around the town at this time.

"The doors are all locked as well as the windows. I have done as you asked to have the servants group up so we don’t lose sight of anyone. The guards are stationed all around the estate, and the escape path is set up if needed," said Harold.

"Good," Selene said, not having anything more to do now. "We must keep quiet and wait for morning to come. I do not know when this shall be over, but no one is to leave."

"Harold, if anyone is caught trying to open any door or window without my order, they are to be locked into a room. This is not the time for careless mistakes," Selene said, loud enough for all the servants to hear.

Selene had overheard some of the servants wanting to leave. Some even went so far as to try slipping out while she was doing a count.

While Selene understood their fear that danger would come to their gates because they were Blackthorns, it wasn’t safe for anyone to be running around. Especially opening doors now that everything was locked.

Selene walked over to the window to see the gates. There wasn’t any movement yet, which was a good sign.

Agnes came to stand beside Selene and asked, "You will be fine, right?"

Selene nodded her head. "Yes. We will all be fine. I must go higher."

Selene needed a better look around the estate. An attack could come from any direction, and if it did, Selene wanted to be prepared.

"Come with me, Agnes," Selene said, heading for the stairs.

Behind Selene were also Lucas and Harold, who could not let Selene out of their sight.

"Will everyone in town be fine?" Agnes wondered. She could only think the worst since no news was reaching the estate.

"I’m sure Isaac will be fine. He might meet with Xavier and come here," Selene said, having a feeling that Agnes was thinking of Isaac.

"That," Agnes blushed. "I am worried about everyone in town."

"Many will die tonight," said Lucas.

"You," Agnes said, wishing Lucas would vanish. "Why did you need to say that?"

"It is the truth. You already know that many must have died by now. Trying to be positive that no one died will do nothing for you. Knowing the dangers that are coming should help you make smarter decisions unless you want to die," said Lucas.

Agnes knew that many would die, but she did not want to say it out loud for Selene to hear when her husband was away from home and in the middle of those dangers.

Just as there wasn’t any news of what was occurring around the town, there wasn’t any news of what Xavier was up to, and Agnes could tell just from looking that Selene was worried.

Selene only picked at her nails when she was nervous.

Selene entered her room and went straight to the balcony where she could look out at the gates and so much more.

The estate was still quiet, but in the distance, Selene noticed something which looked like a lot of smoke.

"Lucas, can’t we send someone to see what is happening near us? We must know what might be coming our way," said Selene.

Selene grew even more worried with each passing second. The smoke was in the same direction Xavier had flown off.

What could there be to set on fire in that direction? No one lived so close to the Blackthorn estate.

"We have men out to see what is happening beyond the estate. They will report to us- Someone is here," Lucas said, stepping forward to get a better look. "It is not the palace guards."

Lucas couldn’t see too well from where they stood, but he was able to make out that they were humans. "The guards will kill them."

Selene watched as a large group of humans approached the right side of the estate, setting the grass on fire.

More guards rushed into the room to protect Selene now that there was a sign of a threat.

"Harold, you must keep the servants settled along with Gertrude. Now is the time to keep them calm and not open any doors unless we are to leave. I leave it to you," Selene said, trusting Harold with the task.

Selene kept watch of the fight between the humans and her guards. There were not enough humans to go up against the number of guards Xavier left behind to protect their home.

Still, Selene worried about anyone from their side being injured by holy weapons. Humans could only be so bold to come here if they had holy weapons, and unfortunately, Selene could not go down to heal anyone.

Lucas watched a little longer before deciding it was time to take Selene away from the balcony so her face wouldn’t be seen.

"We must go back inside," Lucas said, ushering Selene away.

Selene followed Lucas’s lead, but before she could get away from the balcony, she heard a familar voice calling out her name.

It was like a whisper in the wind, but Selene managed to hear.

"That," Selene said, turning around. "That sounded like Cassandra."

Lucas didn’t question what Selene heard.

Xavier had been on the hunt for Cassandra, so if she was here, it was the perfect time to kill her. It would be good news to share with Xavier when he returned.

Cassandra’s presence changed nothing since Lucas still had to move Selene from where she stood now for her sake, but something bothered him.

Xavier’s guards were trained well to take down a human, even if they were carrying a holy weapon.

One of them was half vampire and half witcher because of their parents, who provided the estate with defence unlike any other home, yet there still looked to be a handful of humans making their way forward.

Selene didn’t miss the expression Lucas wore as if something was off. "What is it, Lucas? If something is wrong, you must tell me so I may know what to do next."

"There cannot be ordinary humans. No matter how well they train, they should never be able to get through our guards. There must be a demon amongst them. They are running away," Lucas said, relieved yet also still concerned.

They couldn’t let any human with a demon attached to them get away.
