Betrayed By The Hero, Loved By The Lord-Chapter 243: Grave mistake (1)
Chapter 243: Grave mistake (1)
"I thought you wouldn’t be coming home. Did you have a good day?" Cassandra asked, waiting to take off Gabriel’s coat. "I will have dinner warmed up for you."
Gabriel walked by Cassandra, taking off his coat by himself. "I have already eaten and I don’t want to be disturbed. There is a lot of work for me to do now."
"They will want you to rest. Who will help the town if you tire yourself out?" Cassandra asked.
"I have already rested when I could. I said that I did not want to be disturbed, so I expect that you will follow what I said. You must learn to listen instead of pushing to get your way. There is work I must finish, so go to bed without me," said Gabriel.
Cassandra found it hard to do as Bryce instructed her to do. How could she not want to kill Gabriel when he started to speak to her this way?
"I thought about what you said and I think it is time we had a child. We’ve been married long enough to start planning for one. The room to the left of the second floor is big enough for it," Cassandra said, knowing she had him when he stopped walking.
Gabriel turned to face Cassandra. "You must think I am a fool. Did you truly think it would work for you to dangle a child before me and that it would all be better? I know you are still hesitant to have a child with me. Until you see it was wrong to lie, do not speak to me."
What would she say next? That she wanted to be a vampire?
"I am being honest now that I want to have a child with you. I had my doubts because I lost my mother so early on that I feared how I would be as a mother. You have also found your place in this town while I am still the woman who stole you-"
"Do not try to make me feel sorry for you with this again," Gabriel said, raising his voice as he approached Cassandra, but he then stopped to keep some space between them. "You have used it one too many times, and now, it does not affect me. You are Gabriel Valors’ wife. You have found your place."
Why Cassandra kept trying to toy with his emotions confused Gabriel. Cassandra was not the same woman he met during the war. He could not trust her like he once did before, and he did not yet understand what had changed.
"I haven’t found my place amongst the women here. For some strange reason, they think I would steal their husbands when it is not true. How could we have a child when the mother is not yet accepted? I don’t want our child to be ridiculed," said Cassandra.
"Good. Then you shouldn’t speak of a child simply to calm my anger. You are not ready to be with child, and until you apologise for your lies, you are not my wife in my eyes. I will not live with a liar," Gabriel said, hoping this would open her eyes.
"I am the liar?" Cassandra laughed.
It was too funny when the man clinging to the title of hero said this to her. She knew just how Gabriel became the hero. It wasn’t of his own doing, and he certainly told the story differently.
"You don’t get to tell me about lying. You’ve done things that you have never apologised for. I lied about the maid," Cassandra confessed, tired of going around in circles over something she did. "I wanted her dead because she was disrespectful, and I knew it would hurt Selene."
Cassandra continued to say, "Weren’t you trying to hurt Selene then? Starting with the way you brought me home, the party where you danced with me while ignoring her, and using her bed to sleep with me. Have you apologised for that?"
"You don’t have a place to question what I did with Selene. You weren’t my wife then to do as you liked. You should have told me that the maid was disrespectful and I would have dealt with it-"
"So you wouldn’t have lost Selene that night. You were poking at her from the moment you returned because you wanted her to see she only had you, but little did you know, she had Lord Blackthorn waiting for her. Even if I hadn’t lied, she would have gone to him," Cassandra said, certain of it.
Why would Selene stay with Gabriel when she had Xavier at her side?
Cassandra would have left the moment Xavier showed an interest in her.
"You must stop placing me as the reason she left you. She was going to leave the moment you brought me home. Your plan to use your new title to make her feel a little backfired from the start. You lost her because of your actions, so stop taking it out on me!" Cassandra yelled.
Gabriel stormed over to Cassandra and grabbed her by the neck. "You should stop speaking to me like this for our servants to hear. I made a great risk by taking you in when you have nothing to your name. I could have any vampire in town, but I kept a human by my side. Be grateful and stay silent."
Cassandra glared at Gabriel. "You are not angry with me. You are angry that she loves Lord Blackthorn, but she could not love you. I wonder how long it will be before they have a family," she laughed.
Gabriel considered breaking Cassandra’s neck for the way she spoke. It would have been a little better if she had been drunk. Then she could wake up in the morning with some excuse, but she wasn’t drunk.
This was Cassandra. This was another side to his wife he had missed.
Gabriel released her. "You need to get some rest and come up with a good apology for the morning. A child isn’t going to fix anything, and you must stop thinking you can sway me with your tears. That won’t work."
Cassandra touched the aching spot Gabriel created. She didn’t have a holy weapon, but she was going to kill him tonight for putting his hands on her. She had endured a lot to let the church’s plan succeed, but this was where she drew the line.
Gabriel got as far away from Cassandra as he could before he did something foolish, which would have others questioning his place leading the town guards. He wasn’t thinking when he grabbed her, but he knew she deserved it.
He needed Cassandra to go back to the woman he met weeks ago. The woman who was kind. The woman who loved him and he didn’t need to worry about her stabbing him in the back just like others in the town would.
When Cassandra acted this way, Gabriel once again regretted how his marriage with Selene had ended.
