Chapter 37: Revenge Plot!
"Girl, you can tell me. I’m here to listen, not judge you," Lana said when she noticed Abigail hesitating.
Abigail smiled ruefully before responding, "Lana, are you sure you want to hear my story? It might trigger your anger, and I wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to throw something to let it out..."
"Is it really that bad?" Lana asked, shocked by Abigail’s warning.
"Mmm, that’s why I’m warning you. If you can handle it, I’ll tell you what happened to me." Her breakup with Ryland was overwhelming.
Abigail still vividly remembered almost falling from a fifteen-story building because of her mistakes. She felt fortunate to have met Sawyer that day; if she hadn’t, she might not be having this conversation now.
Lana’s curiosity grew upon hearing Abigail’s warning. "Yes, please, do tell..." she softly urged, thrilled to learn what had happened.
Why did this innocent and kind Abigail look so different from what Lana had seen in the past few days? Abigail appeared happy and thoughtful; her eyes showed no trace of heartbreak. But now, her eyes carried sadness and wrath.
As Abigail’s hands clenched tightly, she began to speak. "Do you remember the first time I came to this café?"
"Yes, of course I remember. You showed up with a big suitcase. I recall that you looked fearful and suddenly had to leave town."
Lana chuckled at the memory. Even now, she felt confused about the situation but didn’t have a chance to ask why Abigail arrived with her suitcase that day.
Abigail smiled bitterly, hearing Lana’s words.
"You looked so sad and devastated that you didn’t even care about your suitcase; you just left it here. I knew you had a problem, but I hesitated to ask," Lana said honestly. "What happened, girl!?"
"Well... that day was the darkest day of my life," Abigail replied, her voice carrying the bitterness. "I caught my fiancé making out with a woman right in front of me, and that woman was my little sister."
"WHAT THE... HELL!" Lana couldn’t help but curse, though she tried to contain her anger. She gestured for Abigail to continue, pressing her lips tightly together, feeling like her anger was about to explode at the shamelessness of her sister.
"Yeah, that was my expression when I caught my scum ex-fiancé. That day, I called off our engagement, stopped working at his company, and moved out of his apartment," Abigail recounted to Lana what happened on that painful day.
After a few minutes of sharing with Lana, the ache she usually felt in her heart and mind slowly faded. She felt lighter now, having expressed her feelings to someone else.
"Oh, my dear Abigail, you poor thing. I truly feel sorry for you," Lana whispered. Although she hadn’t known Abigail for long, hearing her heartbreaking story made her feel as if Abigail was her real sister—the sister who needed to be protected—not just a staff member.
"Thank you, Lana," Abigail replied, noticing Lana’s dark expression and the anger in her gaze. She smiled at her before continuing, "I’m fine now. And please, don’t feel angry or bitter because of that. I don’t want to become your source of negativity and sadness."
"Girl, you are my friend. And I will be sad and angry when my friend gets hurt like you hurt that day. You lost everything, and your grandmother had an accident, too..." Lana felt her eyes blur at the thought of how heartbroken Abigail was. No wonder she didn’t care about her suitcase.
"I wish I had known earlier, Abigail, so that I could help you... to confront that shameless man and your stupid sister!" Lana narrowed her eyes, plotting revenge to support this poor Abigail.
Abigail couldn’t help but laugh at Lana’s expression; it was clear she was starting to make some kind of plan.
"Boss, there’s no need to take action against them. They’re not worth it! Besides, I’m okay now..." A sincere smile graced Abigail’s face as she continued, "You really helped me that day. Because of you, I could rush to visit my grandma, and you also gave me this job..."
"I’m glad to know that I helped you, Abigail." Despite the anger still showing on her face, she added, "Well, I will ban your ex-fiancé and your sister from entering my coffee shop! Forever!"
"Pft!" Abigail stifled a laugh. "Lana, I’m really... really... fine." Her spring-like smile grew wider as she tried to convince Lana of her feelings.
Abigail continued, "Everything is good now. My grandmother is healthier and will be discharged in two days. Thanks to you, I also have a job and a lovely house to live in for at least a year."
"I hope you find nothing but happiness from now on, dear," Lana replied.
"Alright, Boss... It seems we need to work now," Abigail said as she stood from her seat and pointed at the light above the door. It was a signal that a customer needed them to brew coffee.
"Heaven! You’re right," Lana replied, following Abigail. She placed her hand on Abigail’s shoulder as they walked outside. "Let’s get to work and make a lot of money. I need to raise your bonus, girl."
Abigail chuckled.
That day, they worked as usual, processing customer orders.
When there weren’t many customers, Abigail insisted Lana take a break, knowing how tired she had been since morning after work.
As closing time approached, the number of customers began to decrease, allowing Abigail to relax. She chatted briefly with other staff members.
Abigail didn’t plan to stay at the café long after it closed; once she had done with her closing duties, she said goodbye to Lana and headed home to cook herself a dinner—Peters had left her many fresh produce and ingredients that would rot if she didn’t use them soon.
After she put on her earphones and hat to hide her hair, Abigail walked toward her house path. However, before leaving the café’s parking lot, she noticed a familiar black SUV parked near her.
Suddenly, her steps halted.
’Is that Sawyer? Why is he parked here?’ As she approached the car, Abigail wondered if he was inside or in the next-door building.
