Chapter 36: Should I Be Honest?
Crimson Leaf Cafe.
That afternoon, the cafe was not very busy. Abigail noticed that Lana seemed to be enjoying a conversation with Erica, and only a few tables were occupied. Robby, one of the staff members, was cleaning a table without hurry.
When Lana finally saw Abigail enter the cafe, she looked surprised.
Abigail greeted them playfully but didn’t stop at the counter to chit-chat as she used to, even though she had more time now she had come earlier; instead, she headed to the locker room to put away her bag. She was ready to help Lana if needed.
"Oh my God, Abigail, why did you come so early?" Lana asked as she followed her into the staff lounge, leaning against the door frame. She continued, "We’re not that busy at these hours, girl. There’s no need to hurry."
After tying her apron and styling her hair into a ponytail, Abigail turned to look at Lana.
"Boss, I was unusually bored at home, so I decided to punch in work early," she grinned when Lana rolled her eyes, seeming to doubt her. "I’m surprised that not many customers are here at this hour."
"Yeah, these are the hours we can breathe and relax before our beloved customers start lining up after three in the afternoon," Lana chuckled. She gestured for Abigail to follow her to her office.
Abigail followed immediately and sat on the sofa, waiting for Lana to take something from the small fridge in the corner.
"Here’s your favorite..." Lana offers her a can of cold soda before she sits opposite Abigail.
"Owh, thanks, boss," she said with a smile as she accepted cold soda water from Lana. The blazing sun outside made her thirsty on her walk home to the cafe.
After seeing her a bit relaxed upon drinking her cold soda, Lana asked, "Are you feeling better now?"
"Better? Of course, I am, Boss..." Abigail raised her eyebrow, confused by the question. "Why do you think I’m not?"
Abigail began to suspect that her Boss could read minds because Lana always seemed to know how she was feeling, and her guesses were always correct.
"I mean," Lana paused for a moment and smiled. "You seemed to be in a bad mood yesterday, Abigail. And you looked tense as you came in. That’s why I’m worried..."
"Thank you, Boss. I appreciate your attention to your employees’ well-being and your genuine concern. But there’s nothing you need to worry about me; I’m really perfectly fine. Just bored, that’s all." Abigail said, feeling her heart swell with gratitude for Lana’s kindness.
"By the way, have I told you I found a house yesterday?" Abigail asked, trying to divert their conversation.
Suddenly, Lana’s eyes lit up when she heard Abigail’s words. "Seriously? Did you find one? Where?"
Abigail nodded slightly before answering, "Not far from here—only a minute’s walk. And the price is reasonable for me. Pretty cheap, in fact."
Lana raised an eyebrow, curious to hear there was a cheap place nearby. "Really? A cheap rental house nearby? How much is it?"
Realizing Lana’s skepticism, Abigail quickly clarified, "Boss, don’t think I got a whole apartment or house, just a decent room but complete with pantry, bathroom, and all the necessities. The price is decent, so I can afford it with my salary."
Abigail couldn’t possibly tell Lana about the deal she signed earlier; she had only paid $200 for a beautiful, luxurious rooftop house. She is well aware of how unusual that was.
"I see. Don’t tell me you’re living in a semi-basement without a window?" Lana asked, worried. It would be unhealthy for Abigail to stay in a place like that.
Abigail chuckled, "No, thank God it’s not like that at all. It’s on the rooftop. So, I’m living on the rooftop, just like you. But mine is four floors up with only stairs and without an elevator. I guess that’s why the homeowner rents the house so cheap."
"Thank goodness, Abigail. I was worried you wouldn’t find a place to stay nearby." Lana said sincerely.
"Yeah, I’m grateful too..." Abigail replied faintly before sipping her soda again.
She still found it amusing how she secured her house; it felt like the goddess of luck was on her side. How could her luck be this good? She had a free place to stay for a year.
"Girl, what about the man who picked you up yesterday?" Lana narrowed her eyes, demanding an honest answer. "Who is he? A boyfriend?"
Abigail instantly coughed, the soda she had just taken a sip of spilling everywhere and nearly hitting Lana, who was sitting across from her.
"Sorry, sorry... Lana, this cough I had when I got too relaxed," she said hurriedly, pretending to be upset with the cough to cover her shock. She then grabbed a tissue from the small table nearby and started to look busy wiping up the spilled soda.
Instead of getting angry, Lana laughed so hard that Abigail was confused.
"Aha! I knew it! That man must be your boyfriend, right?" Lana asked again.
After cleaning up the mess, Abigail calmly settled back in her seat and chuckled at Lana. "Yeah, I wish. But he is not my boyfriend. That man, I owe my life to him. He is my savior." She explained earnestly and honestly.
Lana was surprised to hear that. She looks at Abigail’s gray eyes, which convey her sincerity. It makes her confused. Abigail is telling the truth or not.
"I thought you were joking with me yesterday, Abigail. So you seriously don’t have a boyfriend!? Cause you looked like the kind of girl who always has a boyfriend," Lana still doubts that a girl as beautiful and kind as Abigail doesn’t have one.
Abigail sighed deeply, wondering if it was necessary to be honest with Lana about her miserable love life with Ryland.
After a few seconds of thinking, Lana’s sincerity and kindness in recent days had made Abigail decide to open up to her.

She needed to express the torment she felt inside. Even though she often seemed fine, her anger toward Ryland and Vanessa sometimes caused her heart to ache.
But one thought troubled her: Was it fair to burden Lana with her sadness?
