Betrayed by Fiance, Embraced by Hidden Tycoon-Chapter 31: Suspicious Reason
Chapter 31: Suspicious Reason
Abigail couldn’t remember how long she had cried. She cried so much that her tears had dried up, leaving her eyes feeling sore.
Her anger at the situation made it hard for her to calm down. Ryland had successfully ruined her mood today. She couldn’t do anything to that damn Ryland; she could only pray to God to send lightning and burn him into ash.
Abigail didn’t want sadness and annoyance to control her. She forced herself to put aside Ryland’s matter in the back of her mind.
She got up from bed and walked to the bathroom. Feeling like her body was about to explode from her anger, she decided to take a cold shower to calm down and get rid of her rage.
Standing under the shower, she could feel the cold water soothing her nerves and gradually subsiding her anger.
After a while, she walked out of the bathroom, wearing only a white bathrobe, and began looking for clean clothes. However, before she could open the wardrobe, her cell phone rang.
A wave of nervousness hit her when she saw the caller’s name.
Abigail immediately picked up the call.
"Mr. Peters, I’ve been trying to contact you. I’m sorry if my text message bothers you, but there is something I need to ask you about, and it’s important. Well, it’s important to me," she said without greeting him first.
She wanted to know what really happened. Why did this generous man suddenly change the rental rate for this house? Instead of raising it, he lowered it. This man was a bit strange.
Since she first met him, Abigail thought Mr. Peters might have skipped math class in school; he couldn’t count well.
"Good morning, Miss Abigail," Peters’ voice sounded calm. He didn’t rush to answer her. "I’m so sorry, Miss... I had an urgent meeting earlier, so I’m just calling you now."
"Ah, I’m sorry for bothering you with your busy work, sir." Abigail silently sighed deeply as she walked to the sofa and settled in. "Mr. Peters, I just wanted to ask you about the rental contract revision."
Silence hung in the air. Peters didn’t say anything.
Abigail wondered if the connection was still on. She pulled away her phone and saw that Peters had not ended the call. But why did he not say anything?
"Hello, Mr. Peters? Are you there? Can you hear me?"
"Yes, yes, I hear you, Miss Abigail. I’m sorry, but I have to revise the contract. I’m so glad you have signed the revised contract. You see, my secretary made some mistakes in the old contract regarding the rules of the house, so I revised it." He explained.
"Oh, I see. But, sir, that’s not what I’m asking about. What I’m asking is why did you reduce the rental rate? I already transferred $2,000 to the realtor’s bank yesterday. But the new contract’s rate is listed as only $200. Did your secretary also make a mistake on that?" she asked.
A light chuckle could be heard from the other end, which only puzzled Abigail even more. Before she could ask, Peters spoke again:
"No, Miss Abigail, the revised rental rate was not a mistake," Peters replied.
Abigail gasped, but no words could leave her lips. She was speechless to know that Peters had only charged her $200. Why did he do that?
"I already gave Brody the refund for your overpayment. Have you received it yet?"
Struck by Peters’ question, Abigail immediately looked at the contract but didn’t see the money envelope.
"No, I haven’t received any money from Brody. He just gave me the revised contract. But, sir, my question is not about the money; it’s about why you reduced the rental rate. Even though I appreciate your generosity by only charging me $200, I don’t feel this is right, sir. Please don’t return my money. I’m fine with a $2,000 rental rate."
Abigail felt uncomfortable receiving his kindness because she didn’t know him. What if this man had a hidden motive for doing that? Would it cause her trouble in the future?
She had better make it clear now or be sorry later.
"Miss Abigail," Peter’s voice sounded distressed. "Would you believe me if I said the actual homeowner wanted to throw me in jail because I rented the house to you?"
"What? Why would the homeowner do that?" Abigail was shocked. She knew that Mr. Peters had also rented this place for five years. He was not the owner.
"Well, I broke a contract. I shouldn’t have rented the place to you. However, I can’t cancel it because you’ve already paid and signed the contract for a year. I have no choice but to plead with the owner to let you stay."
Abigail was lost for words when she learned Mr. Peters was in serious trouble because of her. She felt terrible for him. "I apologize for troubling you, sir," she said helplessly.
"No, please, Miss Abigail. Don’t mention it!" hurriedly, Peters interrupted. "Miss Abigail, this is my own mistake. You are the victim here. You’re not supposed to be renting that place. But since we’ve already signed the papers, and the homeowner feels bad for you if you have to move out again, he allowed you to stay there. However, he asked me not to charge you anything," Peters continued.
"What? So, the homeowner decided to reduce the rental rate to $200?" Abigail asked to make sure she didn’t hear it wrong. It was difficult for her to believe Peters’ words.
"You are mistaken, Miss Abigail; the homeowner didn’t charge you anything because I already paid the house rental. And, he did not allow me to accept a penny from you..."
Abigail felt exhausted talking to him. This man made her feel like she’d entered a maze, struggling to find the exit. She found it difficult to understand his words.
"Mr. Peters, I remember you included in the contract that I must pay you $200, right!?" She asked, confused.
