Chapter 224: The Reunion (3)

Instantly, James’s expression turned pale, and his hand trembled. He was too shocked to process what he had just heard.

"My mother?" he repeated, fearing he hadn’t heard her correctly or perhaps refusing to accept the truth.

Sophie nodded as she smiled bitterly.

As she noticed James’s expression darkening, she continued, "Your mother appeared at my house two days before we registered our marriage. She offered me a large sum of money to leave you." ƒгeewebnovёl.com

"She did that? How did she know your house?" James asked, confused. He remembered that no one in his family knew about Sophie.

"Yes. I don’t know how she found my house, but I remember you were on a business trip then..." she explained.

James opened his mouth several times, trying to find the words to ask, but nothing came out. He still couldn’t believe his mother would do something so horrible.

Sophie chuckled when she saw James still struggling to find the words to respond.

She continued her words, "I was offended when your mother forced me to leave you and offered me money. When I refused to take her money and walk away, she claimed you were marrying the woman they chose and that she was pregnant. That’s the reason I left you, James..."

"WHAT!? Sophie, why did you never tell me about this?" James asked, shocked beyond words. "How could you believe what my mother said without talking to me first?"

James felt puzzled. He couldn’t understand why his mother would say something like that or why Sophie hadn’t confronted him about it.

Sophie didn’t answer his question. Instead, she pulled her hand away and smiled bitterly at him.

"James, of course, I didn’t believe your mother. Do you remember the day before we registered our marriage? We had planned to meet at the restaurant?" Sophie asked. That day, she plans to tell him everything.

"Yes, I remember," James replied. "I waited for you there, but you never showed up; even after a few hours, I waited for you."

James let out a deep sigh. If there had been a telephone then, he wouldn’t have had trouble finding her. He could have called and asked where she was, but there was no quick way to connect with her back then. He had been too afraid to leave the restaurant, worried she would arrive just after he left.

After the day got dark, he rushed to her house, an hour from their meeting place. When he arrived, the house was already empty. The homeowner told him that she had moved out in a rush.

At that moment, he deeply regretted not telling her about the house he had bought for them to live in. He had planned to surprise her by bringing her there after they registered their marriage.

"James, I came to the restaurant but saw you talking with a woman. You both looked happy and seemed to know each other. Before I confronted you, your mother suddenly appeared. She stopped me and explained who the woman was: your pregnant fiancée."

Sophie paused when she noticed how angry James was. His features became red as if blood had rushed to his face.

However, she didn’t intend to hold anything back. She continued, "Your mother begged me to let you go for the sake of your child and the woman. How could I stay? I had no choice but to leave quietly from your life..."

Sophie felt the familiar pain hit her once more as if someone had just rubbed lemon juice on her wounded heart.

James suddenly felt as if half of his soul had vanished hearing Sophie’s explanation. Her explanation suddenly brought back memories of a few years ago when his mother unexpectedly appeared at the restaurant with a woman they had arranged for him to marry.

Of course, he had refused the arrangement because he was about to marry Sophie.

What confused him was how his mother knew about Sophie. He hadn’t yet introduced her to his family because he was sure they would reject her. He planned to introduce Sophie only after they registered their marriage, believing his parents would never force him to divorce her.

James was distraught, his hands tightly clenched. He noticed that Sophie was still avoiding eye contact, so he took his time to figure out what had happened that day.

It was all just a misunderstanding, but one thing puzzled him: How did his mother know about Sophie? How could she have hidden the fact that she had separated them? All this time, he never imagined that his mother could be responsible for this.

After a while, he began to calm down. He was no longer as upset as before.

He turned to see Sophie, and when he saw her more relaxed, he took her hand.

"Sophie, I never knew my mother met you. Until now, I had no idea she was the one who separated us..."

Sophie frowned in response. She remembered his mother telling her that James had agreed to break up with her, claiming he had asked her to meet at the restaurant to discuss it.

At that time, she felt heartbroken. Following Violet Parker’s plan, she decided to vanish from his life. She accepted Violet’s bag, unaware it was filled with money. It wasn’t until she reached her destination that she realized what it contained.

’God! Why do I have to feel this torment again?’ Sophie wondered, recalling all those painful memories that shattered her heart once more.

Seeing how confused she was, James squeezed Sophie’s cold hand.

"Sophie, the woman you saw was the one my family chose for me to marry. Whatever you heard from my mother, all of that was a lie; I never slept with her; how could she be pregnant with me?"

Sophie frowned.

"I never married that woman. I refused the arranged marriage because I had you, and we were about to register our marriage; how could I accept that woman?"

No words escaped Sophie’s lips as she was shocked, unable to respond to what he had just said. ’What the hell is this? His mother lied to me?’

"James, your mother told me you had agreed to break up with me. And... And... I saw you happily talking to that woman in the restaurant."
