Chapter 290: Standing up

When Lyra reached the place of commotion, she couldn’t help but frown. Lucas and Princess Lexi were facing each other but the expressions on their faces differed vastly. Lexi looked like she was holding back her tears from falling meanwhile, Lucas appeared furious with his brows furrowed and chest heaving. This was enough for Lyra to know that Lucas was upset. Very much at that.

"Did Prince Lucas make the princess cry?" asked one of the beastman from the crowd.

"It seems so" answered another one answering the previous beastman’s question.

Lucas’ ears twitched when he heard those whispers from the crowd. He took a deep breath trying his best to stay calm but the woman in front of him seemed like she wouldn’t let him do that.

"I was only talking to him when he suddenly got angry and started shouting" Lexi spoke between her sobs, "Prince, Lucas please forgive me if I have done something wrong"

"Oh my goddess" exclaimed a female in the crowd, "Poor her, she is even apologizing after being treated so harshly. Where are her mates? Shouldn’t they be here to console their mate?"

Before she could talk more, Lexi’s mates rushed towards the latter while pushing the crowd away.

Lyra too acted quickly as she strode toward her mate before holding his hand. She interlocked her fingers between his and gave it a gentle squeeze, "It’s alright" The situation was way too clear for her to not know. From the moment the Fox princess stepped inside the Snake tribe, Lyra had a bad feeling. The former seemed hell-bent on causing trouble one way or another. It was alright if it was small jabs but framing her mate like this was crossing the line.

Lucas felt his tensed shoulders relax as soon as he heard his mate’s reassuring words. He would not like to admit it, but the moment Lexi started to whine and the crowd gathered, Lucas felt anxious. Not because he was scared or anything but it was that he was afraid of ruining his mate’s happiness. He didn’t want her efforts to go to waste in arranging this banquet just because of some entitled princess. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

"What happened here?" Asked Lyra gaining everyone’s attention. She looked the fox princess right in the eye before repeating, "What occurred here that made you cry, princess?"

Lexi frowned seeing the look on Lyra’s face. She didn’t like how the latter questioned her. As everyone could see, Lucas did something wrong and Lexi was crying because of it. So was there a necessity to ask that question? A male dared to make a female cry and the one that was questioned the latter?

"Why are you not answering, Lexi?" this time a voice that was commanding and decisive was heard. The Wolf Queen, Lucas’ mother, stepped out of the crowd with her King by her side. She raised her brows at the fox princess, "Queen Lyra asked you something, Lexi. Aren’t you going to answer when someone above your station asks you a question? You are just a princess now or did you forget that?"

Lexi’s gaze wavered in turmoil but she managed to put on a smile, "Yes, your majesty. I was about to" She was a mere princess now after Derek’s death. Lexi had forgotten it momentarily, so getting that reminder now in front of the mass felt like she just received a hard slap on her face. It was a harsh wake-up call. Her hatred for Lyra increased tenfold because if Kyrell hadn’t killed Derek, then Lexi would still be the queen. This bitch of a female not only destroyed her friend’s life but also hers.

"Then do it quick, girl," said the Wolf queen making Lexi’s frown deepen, "We don’t have all the evening now do we?"

Lexi sighed and soon forced her eyes to water. Her mates tried to console her while glaring at Lucas, "I was just conversing with, Prince Lucas when he suddenly started to raise his voice at me. He yelled at me....."

"Is it true, Lucas?" Lexi’s words came to a stop when Lyra cut in as she asked her mate and Lucas answered promptly.

"No"

"Then can you tell me what really happened?"

Lexi felt humiliated. ’How dare she cut in when I’m talking?’ she mused to herself. This situation itself was angering her to no end and before she could act on it, she felt an eerie gaze on the back of her head making her turn.

There he stood glaring at Lexi as though he would kill her any moment now. Xavier felt like he would explode from the amount of rage he was withholding, "Lexi....!" and before he could move towards his sister, the wolf prince started to talk making him stop in his steps.

"Princess Lexi was indeed conversing with me but the topic she chose was something unpleasant," Lucas said, "She talked about Princess Elena of the Black Wolf tribe, the one that has become a traitor to our city"

Lexi paled. She didn’t expect Lucas to tell the truth which he never did before. In the past, whenever she tried to rile him up, he just took the blame before leaving the scene.

Lucas didn’t want to be a coward anymore. Not in front of his mate at least. She was willing to hear him out unlike his own mother in the past so he wanted to keep her trust. The wolf queen in the past always tried to brush the matter off whenever Lexi or Elena bothered him because she worried that he would end up mateless. He could understand his mother but that didn’t make it hurt any less. Nonetheless, he was thankful that his mother decided to stand up for him.....now at least.

Lyra turned to the fox princess, "Why did you talk about her, princess? Don’t you know that it is a crime? You mentioning that traitor in my tribe...how dare you?"

"Your majesty, I-I did not....." Lexi stammered.

"Enough!" Lyra said, "Princess I have already let your rude remarks on me slide but not anymore" Then she turned towards Peter, "Escort princess Lexi out of the snake tribe. She is not welcome here anymore"

Blake nodded at Peter and the latter quickly stepped toward the fox princess only to be stopped by her mates.

"Move aside or this will not end well" Peter warned before glancing at Lexi, "I hope you will choose a dignified way out, princess"

Lexi felt real tears burn her eyes. Not wanting to embarrass herself any further, she strode out of that place passing by the crowd followed by her mates.

Everyone around dispersed when they knew that it was over. The wolf queen, on the other hand, came near her son before parting her lips, "I’m sorry, son. I didn’t support you for all these years...I’m really very sorry"

Lucas shook his head, "You had your reasons, mother. I understand"

The wolf queen gave a weak smile in return. She indeed had her reasons but not taking her cub’s side was wrong no matter the circumstance.

As time passed, Beastmen started to indulge themselves in the banquet forgetting the previous commotion.

All of them had moved on but Lucas could see that his mate clearly didn’t. He could feel her eyes on him as they sat in front of the bonfire holding hands. They were far from others because Lyra insisted that she had something to talk about with Lucas in private.

"What is it?" asked Lucas trying to break the tension.

Lyra blinked at him, "Something is bothering you" It was not a doubt but a conviction. She could clearly see it on her mate’s face. Something more seemed to have happened with the fox princess that he was trying to hide.

"Tell me, my prince," Lyra asked in a soft tone as she leaned towards her mate, "What is really bothering you?"
