Chapter 26: Chiselclaw

The maleficent and magnificent structure of the mountain of skull lay bare before the crew, a wonderful yet dangerous sight to behold. The low, ominous sounds escaping from the mountain added another layer of mischief to its appearance.

It brought about silence amongst the crew. They halted, taking in the magnificent structure with different emotions displayed in their eyes—fear, awe, and cautious wonder. Nervous gulps escaped the mouths of a few soldiers, their breaths visible in the cooling air.

’Standing close to it feels like standing before a bomb, ready to explode,’ thought Alister as he scanned his surroundings, his heart pounding slightly faster than usual.

Surrounding the base of mountain were skeletal remains of inhuman creatures. The smallest skeletal remain on sight was bigger than an average human being, and the biggest one was a lot bigger than two elephants combined.

The structure and sizes of the remains alone reminded the crew of the danger that existed within the mountain of skull.

If such gigantic creatures could not survive the mountain of skull, would it be possible for the measly human to survive?

Osborne observed the maleficent structure for a few seconds before bringing out a map from his spatial pouch. The lines of the lap had a soft glow that made it more eligible in the dark.

He began tracing lines on the map with his wrinkly finger while observing the mountain from time to time. A few minutes later, he pointed at the biggest skeletal remains on sight, and the crew began strolling towards it.

Five to ten minutes later, they arrived at the location.

The skeletal remain was even more immense up close and—shockingly—based on its appearance, it was just the upper torso. Its head and lower torso were missing, leaving only a massive ribcage jutting from the earth.

Some of the crew memes could not help but gasp in disbelief. Just how big was the creature when alive?

Beside the massive size of the skeletal remain, the crew were also greeted with some sort of staircase carved into the body of the cave.

Staring from below, the ancient staircase only reached a certain height, where a massive cavity could be seen.

Osborne briefly explained the route to them — The staircase were created by the first humans that existed and the cavity on sight was a massive tunnel dug by a Chiselclaw that existed long ago. The staircase ends at the opening of the massive cavity.

"Passing through the tunnel is a lot faster and safer than climbing. However, the tunnel does not directly lead to the other side." Osborne explained.

According to research and history, a magical path existed within the tunnel that would lead to the other side of the dark mountain. Osborne explained the lore about the magical path, and it was both scary and interesting.

After digesting the information from the wizard, the crew braced themselves and began walking through the ancient staircase. Alister led the journey, his sword equipped and eyes scanning his surroundings vigilantly.

Fortunately, there were no abnormalities on sight. Only skeletal remains filled the path leading to the cavity.

The low, ominous sounds escaping from the mountain of skull became clearer and louder as they approached the cavity.

The sound was difficult to describe. It sounded like peaceful moving water and low cries of abnormalities at the same time. Randomly, the crew would hear low growling sounds and even inhuman whistles escaping from the cavity.

These sounds were scary enough to make anyone give up, but with Alister leading, the crew were confident of surviving.

Thirty minutes to about an hour slowly went by gently — the evening sun had disappeared and darkness covered the entire region. The moon still hadn’t appeared, and the crew were temporarily blinded.

Fortunately, Osborne possessed a peculiar lantern with a mesmerizing glowing crystal inside it that gave off a beautiful glow resembling the early morning sun. He handed the crystal lantern to the hero and it instantly became the only source of illumination.

With the help of the crystal lantern, the journey resumed at its former pace, their destination became even more visible, only a few minutes away.

"We are here!"

Alister halted on the last step leading into the wide opened cavity, and announced to the rest of the crew.

From his position and with the aid of the bright glowing lantern, the hero was able to observe the tunnel path ahead.

The tunnel appeared endless, stretching over a long distance—so long that light could not touch certain parts of it. It was also wide and very tall, an elephant would even appear really small strolling through the tunnel.

The floor of the tunnel was rough and jagged, and a lot of skeletons could be seen lying in different positions. A pile of them could even be seen stacked up not too far away into the tunnel.

The ominous noise earlier was even louder and appeared to be coming from deep within the tunnel—at a distance the crystal lantern couldn’t reach.

Alister could not help but wonder just how big the Chiselclaw that dug the tunnel was.

Osborne and Theobald stepped up to behold the sight of the tunnel as well, and they were equally as puzzled as Alister.

Fortunately, there were no abnormalities on sight as they had expected. Aside the skeletons and the ominous sound escaping from the deepest part of the tunnel, the path was safe.

Alister heaved a sigh and took the first step into the scary tunnel. His feet stepped on and crutched a little skeletal remain at the entrance, sending a crunching sound echoing.

Osborne, Theobald, King Julian, and the remaining soldiers followed after the hero silently.

Their steps, although cautious and silent as it could be, still echoed into the tunnel, revealing its emptiness. As they stepped deeper into the tunnel, their eyes did not stop wandering and observing the wide tunnel.

Just what fate awaits them?
