Witty Wife, Better Life-Chapter 849 - 839 Boss, Your Turn
Chapter 849: Chapter 839 Boss, Your Turn
Before the host was selected, Wang Dan had already made the call.
"Yunfang, your eldest brother, Erdan, and Sandan have bought train tickets for tomorrow morning. Erdan guesses we’ll probably arrive at your place by the night after tomorrow." Wang Dan had not been to Z Province many times, so she was always a bit unsure about the timing. However, Erdan and Sandan, having spent over a month in Z Province each winter and summer vacation for the past few years, were familiar with the route.
"Alright, then I’ll drive to the train station tomorrow to pick you all up," Shen Yunfang said cheerfully.
Goudan’s wedding date was set for ten days later. There were two new homes prepared for him: one was an apartment in the city, and the other was a single dormitory on the farm.
She had visited both places, and Cui Ying had made them very cozy, especially the photos of the couple. She had several particularly beautiful ones enlarged and developed. Now those photos were hanging on the walls of both homes, visible as soon as one walked through the door.
As for the banquet and such, it was agreed to have it in the farm’s canteen. Shen Yunfang did not let Goudan pay for it; she, as his aunt, covered the costs as a little token of goodwill for the young couple.
Shen Yunfang had informed Wang Dan of this earlier, so now Wang Dan had nothing but high praise for her sister-in-law.
"Sister-in-law, is the meeting about to start?" Zhang Chunwang pushed open the door of the office, saw his sister-in-law on the phone, and quietly asked.
Shen Yunfang holding the handset, replied, "You go ahead, I’ll be right there."
"Yunfang, you must be busy there," Wang Dan said, having overheard some noise despite the cover.
"Yes, elder sister-in-law, there’s an event at the farm these past two days, so it’s been hectic," Shen Yunfang said.
"Alright then, I won’t bother you anymore, go ahead with your work, and we can catch up when we meet tomorrow," Wang Dan said understandingly.
Shen Yunfang hung up and hurriedly walked to the upstairs conference room.
By the time she arrived, all the meeting attendees were already there.
"Sorry for being late. Let’s start the meeting now," Shen Yunfang said, apologizing as she sat down, then proceeding with the meeting’s agenda.
The main topic of this meeting was to discuss the selection of the host, which was yet to be decided. With filming scheduled to start soon, time was running short for preparations.
The director, Director Yuan, who was not very familiar with this area, had only expressed his requirements for a host at the beginning of the meeting.
He was from the Governor of Hong Kong’s team and did not speak Mandarin well. Li Tuo was the only person present who could fully grasp his mixed Cantonese and English, serving as the translator for the group of farmers listening in.
The crowd began discussing, each chiming in one after another. It wasn’t clear who suggested it first, but someone mentioned, "Considering the requirements set by Director Yuan, I think our sister-in-law is the only qualified person in our farm. Anyone else would just be talking nonsense – we won’t come up with anything fruitful by discussing it."
Everyone looked at the boss sitting in the primary seat and pondered over these words, inevitably nodding in agreement, "It really does make sense. What Director Yuan described fits our sister-in-law perfectly."
"Yes, yes, only our sister-in-law meets all those criteria."
Li Tuo also looked at the boss. When nobody was mentioning it, nobody thought of it; now that someone brought it up, Li Tuo also felt that the boss seemed like the most suitable host, mainly because he knew the boss’s English was very good. With that, they could communicate in English throughout the filming, saving the need to add English subtitles later.
He lowered his head and whispered a few words to Director Yuan, who also looked towards Shen Yunfang, sizing her up from top to bottom and finally nodding his head in satisfaction.
Shen Yunfang just sat upright in front of them, letting him size her up, while also considering the feasibility of the matter in her mind.
Now, without a suitable host, if they couldn’t find one, she guessed she would have to bite the bullet and do it herself—who else was there, since it was her own venture?
The meeting ended inconclusively; they started discussing who was fit for the role but soon targeted Shen Yunfang. Then it was one compliment after another, praising the boss as the perfect fit, the only choice.
In the end, with no other options, Shen Yunfang, the boss, was reluctantly appointed as the host.
Now that things were settled, Shen Yunfang put this matter aside for a bit. The next afternoon, she drove her car to the train station to pick someone up.
"Oh, Yunfang, I finally get to see you. I’ve troubled you so much about Goudan’s matter," Wang Dan said as she exited the train station and clung to her sister-in-law’s hand, shaking it continuously in gratitude.
"Big sister, you’re too polite. Goudan is my own nephew, and while he’s still with us, I definitely couldn’t just stand by. Besides, Goudan is doing well himself; I didn’t really do much," Shen Yunfang said with a smile. "Big brother, come on, let’s go home first and chat there."
The group fit perfectly into one car and they drove off towards the farm.
Wang Dan and the others were staying for quite a while this time, and there were many of them; the house couldn’t accommodate everyone, so Shen Yunfang directly arranged for them to stay in the dormitories at the farm. It was also convenient for meeting Goudan and Cui Ying to discuss matters.
It goes without saying how Wang Dan felt when she reunited with Goudan and his mother. When everyone finished work in the afternoon, Shen Yunfang drove everyone back to the military compound. As it was Li Hongjun’s older brother and sister-in-law’s first day visiting, they had to host a meal. Moreover, Li Hongjun didn’t have much free time, so having everyone over made talking things over more convenient.
That evening, dinner at the Li family’s home was later than usual, with Wang Dan bonding with her future daughter-in-law in the kitchen, while the rest chatted in the living room.
Li Hongxing and Li Hongjun broached Li Xianghe’s situation once again. Eventually, Li Xianghe got divorced, just before their arrival; she had just returned to her parents’ home. According to Li Hongxing, Li Xianghe arrived in a pitiful state, with just a wrapped bundle, and when she got to the old house, she broke down and wept with the bedridden old Mr. Li.
Presumably, after the divorce, with nowhere else to go, she had to move back into the old family home.
Li Hongjun had said he would no longer deal with Li Xianghe’s affairs, so he just listened to these updates and left it at that. No matter how badly Li Xianghe could cry, weeping to old Mr. Li was to no avail. One could say that Mr. Li himself was in dire straits, and if not for the filial piety of his children, who knows how tall the grass would have grown on his grave by now.
The rumors of Madam Xue’s affair with old Mr. Li, which broke out over two years ago, led to her downfall. One day, the police suddenly conducted a surprise inspection in the county and arrested Xue Suqin; she was caught at the tail end of a crackdown and was sentenced to five years for hooliganism.
People whispered that it was all Li Hongjun’s doing—how else could it be that just after the two Li elders fell, Xue Suqin met with misfortune? Everyone also agreed that Xue Suqin got what she deserved. Had she not meddled in others’ affairs, she would not have ended up in such dire straits.
At the dinner table, Li Hongjun discussed Niuniu’s disappearance with Wang Dan and her husband. He made it clear that from now on, he would no longer acknowledge Li Xianghe as his sister; whether she lived or died, there was no need to involve him.
Wang Dan immediately expressed that she would stand with their family on this matter. She had disliked Li Xianghe for a long time already.
