Tyrant's Obsession With The Heiress-Chapter 43: A Man Who Never Proved Anything To Anyone But Himself
Chapter 43 - A Man Who Never Proved Anything To Anyone But Himself
Orpheus' words were a statement.
Not a question.
Lady Karina glanced up at him, studying the splash pattern of ocean blue that filled a portion of his left iris.
In more ways than one, it was mesmerising, and she struggled to keep her focus.
Truth be told, her distaste for his marriage proposal wasn't simply because it was him.
There were other reasons.
"I believe you are clever with your words and will tell me whatever you wish in order to gain your way," Lady Karina said frankly. "I requested that you stop with your kisses; hence, you propose I be your wife so that I will allow you to have your way."
Orpheus was taken aback by her conclusion.
Did she have to think so bitterly about his proposal?
He cocked an eyebrow, which drew her attention away from the mesmerising dual shades of his eyes.
"Is that truly what you believe, my Lady?" Orpheus questioned, his arm loosening around her waist but not releasing her just yet. "Do you believe that I tell you things that will please your ear simply to have my way with you?"
Was that not the case?
Many men would silence their women that way.
They would whisper sweet nothings or any insincere compliment to earn the woman's favour to their advantage.
Lady Karina simply nodded once to his question and he could guess by her expression that she was deadly serious.
His first inclination was one of aggravation.

"God's blood, Karina," he said with a furious huff of breath. "You are my captive. It would be a simple task for me to take what I will without the need for any permission from you."
Lady Karina's cheeks flushed. "I have told you that I will never be your..."
"My whore," Orpheus cut her off, nodding. "I know and I have heard it nearly half a dozen times. You simply speak more than you should and your mind wanders beyond where it should."
The audacity of the man to tell her she talked too much and overthought everything.
She didn't take well to that and scowled.
"What else can you possibly expect me to do?" The fire in her was rising and not in a pleasant way this time. "You've laid siege to Moonveil, murdered my father's knights, killed a child who could barely defend himself, and created an army of corpses in the bailey."
Orpheus thought to reply, but she wasn't quite finished. He could see her chest heaving with anger while he still held her.
"You truly expect me to brush all of it away, pretend it never happened and happily accept your marriage proposal?" Lady Karina huffed again, her cheeks flaring red from how much force she put into her question.
Orpheus felt as if a blade had pierced through his chest.
What was he thinking?
How could he have possibly expected her to agree to his marriage prospect?
He released her completely, swiftly turning on his heels as if to match from the solar.
Lady Karina watched him storm his way to the door, but he paused briefly and glanced over his shoulder at her.
"I am Orpheus Van Merikh," he stated with exasperation in his voice, but strangely, his tone remained moderately civil. "Men fear me. Emperors fear me. And if God himself does not yet fear me, he will for if I could trace a path to heaven, I would not hesitate to lay siege to it as well."
What madness was the man speaking?
It only spurred on Lady Karina's first thoughts about his brutality, that perhaps there was something amiss or something more at work behind the scenes.
He shifted on his heels and walked abruptly towards her again.
And there it was. The sinister red beneath the dual shades of his eyes.
It was far more menacing than the first time she had seen it.
"I am known as many things, Karina," Orpheus remarked, barely keeping his fire in check as he stood towering over her once more. "But I have never once acted on lies and manipulations for those are cowardly traits."
Lady Karina parted her lips to speak, but he too wasn't quite finished and gripped her chin to force her to look up at him.
"I have pledged that I will make you my wife and I will do so," he added, his eyes tense. "You can take your oath upon my word for it is solid as gold."
Regardless of his original motivations with the white phoenix of Moonveil, that did not change his desires towards Lady Karina.
Those were not fuelled by his goals.
Lady Karina held his gaze, noticing how the sheer size of the man dominated everything in the room.
However, she did not sense any true rage from him; it was frustration, annoyance, and an odd sense of desperation.
The man was dying to make her his and it irked him to no end that while he could have had her in his arms, she was beyond his reach.
And within his outburst, Lady Karina began to realise the depths of his sincerity.
Slowly, she shook her head. "Marriage between us is impossible for my father will never consent to it."
Orpheus arched a brow as he habitually did. "The man is my prisoner."
"Then you would think to slay him and impale him on a pole like the rest of the knights in the bailey if he does not consent?" Her voice raised in an outrage. "Have you gone mad more than you already are?"
Orpheus exhaled a weary breath.
"That was not what I implied," he corrected. "I simply implied... hell, I do not know what I implied. To what lengths must I go before you realise that my intentions are honest and real?"
Lady Karina stared at him, understanding that Orpheus wanted to know how he should prove himself.
That was rather strange, considering the man had never worked to prove anything to anyone but himself.
And yet here he was, demanding to validate his intentions.
She was startled at the least, hardly comprehending that the man was preparing to bargain for the consent of her hand in marriage.
Had Orpheus Van Merikh done such things before?
