“Dad, why have you been looking so down lately? Did something happen at work?” Xia Chen had noticed it for a while now—his father always seemed to have a frown etched between his brows. That had never happened before.

No matter how bad things got for the Xia family in the past, his father always managed to handle it calmly, settling everything before it got out of hand.

“It’s nothing, I’ve just been a little tired lately. How are things at school, Xia Chen?”

“Not bad at all. My grades are still holding steady, but recently I’ve been hanging out with HuMing more, and I just realized—there really are freaks in this world. That guy can fight, his grades are excellent, he’s like a walking protagonist template. Dad, do you think someone can really be that perfect?”

Xia GaoWu paused, cup in hand. After a brief moment, he moved to sit beside his son, placed a hand on Xia Chen’s shoulder, and said in a low voice,

“No matter how perfect HuMing might seem, he has weaknesses. He’s just very good at hiding them. Son, you need to learn to hide your weaknesses too. Don’t let anyone else find them. I gave you the Xia family too early… but one day, you’ll have to take it all on.”

Xia GaoWu didn’t know if what he was saying had any real impact.

He just had this constant feeling—like time was running out. The pressure bearing down on the Xia family had only been increasing, and lately, he felt eyes on him. Constant surveillance. Constant threats.

He was almost ready to blow it all open.

And when that moment came, all he could hope for was that HuMing would be able to clean up the mess—give Xia Chen and Xia XiaoXi a safe place to live.

“You’re right, Dad. Honestly, I think it’s time I started taking responsibility too.”

Hearing that, Xia GaoWu’s expression shifted into one of disbelief. In the past, no matter how hard he tried to persuade or pressure Xia Chen, the boy always danced around the topic, dodging it every time.

But today… his son actually agreed?

“Xia Chen… are you serious?”

“Of course. Today, I saw HuMing step in to protect a girl without hesitation. At first I thought, maybe it’s because he has the Gu family backing him. But then I realized—he just has confidence. He believes in himself enough to act alone. A lot of the time, he’s strong enough to protect the people around him all by himself. And honestly… I want to be like that too.”

Xia Chen had always been hesitant. But ever since he met HuMing, he’d been drawn to the way the guy moved, the way he acted.

HuMing kept doing all the things Xia Chen wanted to do—but couldn’t.

So, little by little, HuMing’s influence started to take root.

Xia Chen felt it—he needed to change. Because if he waited until the moment demanded change, it might already be too late.

He didn’t want to live with regret.

“That’s exactly the kind of thinking you need!” Xia GaoWu could barely contain his excitement, his hand trembling as he gripped his son’s shoulder.

Then Xia Chen suddenly changed the subject.

“By the way, XiaoXi’s coming back tomorrow. Should we invite HuMing to eat with us? They’re friends, after all.”

“Sure, just let him know. We’ll all go out together.”

At that same moment, HuMing had just finished chatting with Han YunXi about their summer plans. She was planning to spend some time away, and he didn’t really mind.

It had been a while since he last saw YunXi anyway. But more importantly, he was curious—what had Second Grandpa left for him?

Was it something about his origins? Or maybe… something that could flip the whole situation on its head?

Sitting up from bed in the middle of the night, HuMing felt a bit thirsty and went to grab a glass of water.

But just as he reached the corner of the hallway, he heard two low voices coming from the living room.

He leaned in quietly and peeked around the corner—Gu WeiJun and Gu WeiYi were sitting across from each other. But this time, their faces weren’t calm. fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm

“WeiJun, tell me—why is QiuLing’s attending doctor connected to Shi Zhong?” Gu WeiYi’s expression was grim, his usual gentleness nowhere to be seen.

But WeiYi’s gaze stayed steady, unflinching at his brother’s question.

“Brother… do you think I was the one who caused the chaos within the Gu family?”

Just that one sentence made Gu WeiJun’s pupils contract sharply. To him, WeiYi had always been the one person he could trust. But now, his brother was saying—he might be the one behind the internal strife?

It was hard to swallow.

Especially because he couldn’t understand—why?

They’d never had serious conflict growing up. They weren’t like outsiders assumed, caught in a power struggle.

If anything, WeiYi had always followed his lead.

So… was it dissatisfaction? Was that what drove him to orchestrate all of this?

Gu WeiJun didn’t want to believe it. But he waited, needing an answer.

“WeiYi, give me an explanation. Even if it sounds ridiculous… I’ll believe you.”

“Brother, do you remember the night QiuLing got hurt?”

“Of course. We were at Father’s banquet, and she was attacked on her way home. We never expected—that would be the start of everything.”

“You don’t know how helpless I felt when I saw her lying there. If Shi Zhong hadn’t sent his doctor, QiuLing wouldn’t have survived. That doctor saved her life.”

WeiYi lowered his gaze. Over the years, he had tried to approach that doctor again.

But the man was Shi Zhong’s loyal confidant. Betrayal wasn’t an option.

Worse—Shi Zhong had warned him. Told him not to try anything, or else he wouldn’t guarantee QiuLing’s safety.

WeiYi had kept all of it buried.

But now that WeiJun had found out… it could only mean one thing—Shi Zhong was making his move against the Gu family.

And his goal? Drive a wedge between the brothers. Break them apart.

“So this was all Shi Zhong’s doing?”

“I don’t know for sure. But I doubt the Gu family is the only target.”

Gu WeiJun’s frown deepened. The more he listened, the clearer things became—how so many of their moves had been preempted. How their every step had been known.

Shi Zhong had been choking the Gu family from the shadows for a long time.

“You should’ve told me earlier. We could’ve done something about it.”

“It’s not that simple, Brother. I think… someone inside the Gu family is working with him. Someone hidden, someone deep.”

WeiYi’s eyes gleamed, cold and sharp—just like they had in the past.
