The house was quiet, empty—no one in sight. As he moved toward the kitchen, faint chatter drifted in from the backyard.

"...They're out back, just doing some laundry."

The back door was closed shut, and from what Tonya had just told him, there was no one else in the house—at least for now.

His eyes flickered over to her, watching as she continued chopping carrots with quiet focus.
