“We can’t go back?” Sam gasped in shock.
He glanced at Chen Ke, sensing that the other wasn’t panicking but instead seemed deep in thought, as if weighing something.

Our most advanced experiment was merely detecting telecommunication signals from another timeline via quantum channel, and trying to send signals back at the same frequency,” Dr. Jiu Lin shook her head.
Sam sighed, holding his gun and looking a bit despondent.
Chen Ke patted his shoulder, “You’re not even afraid of turning to ashes; what does it matter if we can’t return?”

Chen Ke smiled. All he wanted right now was to get back to the Rumi Hotel as quickly as possible. Many injured needed medical supplies, and having Diana alone with Ying Baiyi felt somewhat risky.

“Yes, but not by the hands of a monster,” Dr. Jiu Lin said.

“Yes, he told us he was going to find the subway we were on…” Sam said.
“So, you were on the subway, just happening to pass through the nexus…” Dr. Jiu Lin smiled, then closed her notebook.
“You still haven’t told us why Ying Baiyi killed his own partner,” Chen Ke prompted.
“Because he tried to stop Ying Baiyi from taking the survivors away. After I filled him in on the situation of the world, Ying Baiyi had been mentally unstable,” Dr. Jiu Lin shook her head.
Chen Ke took a deep breath. If Ying Baiyi lost his sanity, everyone in the Rumi Hotel could be in danger.

“This place is safe. If you encounter other survivors, you can bring them here,” Dr. Jiu Lin said.

The two walked halfway down the corridor when the sound of Dr. Jiu Lin closing the door came from behind. The only light that had been escaping from the office was now gone, making their path pitch black.
“Are you really decided on going up?” Sam asked in a whisper.
“This hospital is huge, Sam. We’ll go down to the fourth or third basement, clear out some medical supplies, then head back when it dawns,” Chen Ke responded.
They reached the elevator and pressed the button; in the eerie silence, the elevator doors opened with a soft sound, their white lights piercing the dark hallway, momentarily dazzling them.
“I think that female doctor is alright. She told us a lot, and I can’t see any malice from her,” Sam said.
The two entered the elevator, and the doors slowly closed.
“Sam, it’s not that she has no malice towards us, but rather she possesses a strong curiosity. If we stayed, it’s highly likely we would end up like those people in the infirmary…” Chen Ke spoke gravely.

“We pressed the button, but the elevator hasn’t moved at all,” Chen Ke said.
