Chapter 374: Bad omen

Camilla was not expecting this, this was not what she planned. Vitalis was meant to be a place of new beginnings. Not where to go back to her past.

She was tempted, she wanted to say yes, but what would happen to Caroline and the boys?

Camilla squatted to Richard’s level, "Richard I don’t know what to say. What will happen to Caroline? I am still the cursed barren woman, and no matter what, you can’t abandon your children. I don’t want to be in a situation where it will feel like I am stealing you from them."

Richard held her face; it felt the same as he remembered. "We will find a way for it to work. I can buy a better house. Any of your choice, just say yes." Richard offered, her green eyes held his brow eyes. Simple but charming

"You are ready to accept me despite being defiled by numerous men. Richard, I was sold to a sex slave operation. I am no longer the woman you know. I am flirty.." Richard hushed her with his finger, then pulled her into a hug.

"You are still the Camilla I know, even if you have changed it is okay as long as you are alive at my side and you can stand my touch." Her heart wavered, and the tears kept on pouring. This was the man she fell in love with.

He was never the type to give up, he stood by her side until a drunk incident ruined it all. If he could change one thing, he would not have gotten drunk that night. The one night that ruined his family.

"You make it so hard to hate you, Richard. That is what I despise the most about you."

Back on the ship, after they had docked, a knight from the imperial palace came to speak to Cedric, delaying their departure.

Abrielle spent her time sending the girl off but she felt something run. There was a feeling that something bad had happened, and the atmosphere around Cedric as he spoke to the knight made her fear the worst had happened.

The knight bowed after he was done talking with Cedric. Her eyes met his. Something about the look he had in those eyes made her heart thud loudly.

Cedric sighed, then summoned Elias, "We will be going straight to the palace." He instructed. Abrielle waited for him to come, he knew she could already sense the strange presence.

The salty sea water filled the air, the wind blew lightly. He didn’t speak. "There is a state emergency. I don’t know much of the details but every member of the royal family has been summoned."

Her mind raced, wondering what might be that required the family to be summoned on such short notice. She started to think of several scenarios. This was something she wasn’t expecting, and she knew it was going to be too big.

The carriage was arranged immediately and they rode out of the port. The road was cleared ahead making it easier to move through the busy streets of Vitalis.

The people all stopped and bowed as they saw the royal family flag. Cedric was quiet the entire time, Abrielle knew his mind was being plagued.

Cedric was a strategist; his mind was deep in thought. He sat in a laid-back position with his eyes closed. Abrielle was aware that he was awake. She knew he was troubled the same way her guts were hinting at her.

She reached out for his hand; the subtle sparks made him glance at her way. Abrielle didn’t say anything and just turned to the window. Summer was near as spring was coming to an end, the trees and grass looked more vibrant, but their lively colour didn’t ease the feeling of doom Abrielle felt.

A row of heavily guarded carriages rolled into the palace road and came to a halt. The door was opened and Cedric stepped out first to hold up his hand for Abrielle.

"Thank you," she said, once her heels touched the stone part.

"Welcome back your highnesses, I hope your journey wasn’t too difficult." A nobleman who worked in the court welcomed them with a bow.

Abrielle wanted to exchange pleasantries but Cedric wasn’t in the mood for that. "I heard the king has summoned us." He said.

The nobleman sighed; he was used to Cedric’s personality from the court already. "Yes, the king demands your presence. Please come this way." He replied and then led them.

Cedric nodded at Abrielle and they followed behind. Normally they didn’t need escorts in the palace because Cedric knew the place like the back of his palms. Today it felt like there was an official matter.

The nobleman didn’t say exactly where they were going, and from the path he took, Cedric was certain it wasn’t the courtroom or the study. There was one place that these quiet, over secured halls led to, the king’s chambers.

Why was Kaiden having a family meeting in his chambers? He wondered.

Abrielle has not been to this part of the palace before or seen the gardens they walked past. It only made her more unwary. The palace was more enormous than she had thought, and her eyes were admiring the architecture.

Just as Cedric had suspected, it was the king’s chambers. The nobleman stopped in front of two large, heavily guarded double doors. Abrielle felt Cedric link his fingers with hers. Confused, she glanced at his hand.

It was out of character for him. "Only family members are allowed inside." The nobleman bowed.

Cedric nodded, then pulled Abrielle in. The large doors were opened, and they stepped into the King’s private quarters.

The first room was like a larger sitting room and as expected, every member of the Von Drakkar family was present, including even Astrid and her daughter Diana. The only one missing was Ophelia because she was in a different Kingdom.

"Guess who finally decided to show up?" Karissa sneered, receiving a stern look from Eleanor.

Cedric approached an empty seat that he let Abrielle have. He was trying to understand the room’s atmosphere. His lips parted with his eyes on Eleanor who was too calm.

She was the queen and the highest-ranked here. "Why were we summoned, Queen Mother?" He requested that she even call her mother just to hold her public image.

Eleanor’s grey eyes met his gold eyes, she looked too exhausted but she spoke. "It is a matter that should not be shared outside this family. Your father is ill and the physicians have been with him since the night before, I fear he might not make it."
