Chapter 302: A change of plans

Cedric raced like his life depended on it; if not for the fact that his eyes were on him, he would have teleported to a nearby location since he didn’t know exactly where the carriage crashed. Unfortunately, he had to compromise; all he could do was hope he wasn’t late.

"Hold on," he wished and hoped everything would be fine. Midnight’s hooves struck the ground as it ran faster than it had before; the other knights could barely keep up with the horse’s speed, and they fell a bit behind.

As soon as he heard of the assassination Cedric left the square. He didn’t care; nothing mattered. Why was this happening now? She wasn’t the sorcerer’s target and Eleanor’s goal was to kill her at the court.

From a distance, he could see smoke ahead in the woods rising from the flames. He glanced at the knights. They were holding him back; he hated this feeling, the thought of why he had to hide himself from his men.

"You don’t have a choice," Cedric said, he wasn’t fast enough. So he pulled a stunt, changing Midnight’s route into the woods. The knights didn’t expect the move, and they tried to follow, but Cedric seemed to have disappeared into the woods.

"Where did he go?" One asked, Elias, who wasn’t far off and had an idea of what happened, intervened. "Let’s head for the flames." He commanded with no room for explanation. The knights had no choice but to obey, swallowing their curiosity and continuing on their initial course towards the flames.

Close to the flames, Cedric materialized with midnight. The horse was a bit startled by his master’s abilities. "Settle down, we don’t have a moment to spare." He calmed the horse as he charged for the flames while also heightening his sense to find any sign of her.

From a distance, he could hear swords clashing, and he headed in the direction.

Axel was still fighting against the assassins. A horse neigh rang, and the assassins immediately sensed Cedric’s presence. No words were spoken, and they immediately retreated. The rest were already long gone; they only stayed behind to give the boat enough time to get to sea.

Cedric charged forward, but the assassin had already thought ahead. They immediately retreated to the woods. Axel almost collapsed from exhaustion but held his ground because of the prince.

"The carriage fell down, your Highness", he informed the prince, who barely acknowledged his attention and raced down the hill from the road into the forest. "Go after them," that was his single instruction.

Cedric could faintly sense her; seeing the damage, his fear grew. He followed her faint scent and quickly found the carriage crash site. All the trees around were burnt and a strong hacking cough echoed.

Evelyn was kneeling on the ground exhausted from having to fend off all the sorcerers along. They were powerful, the carbon poisoning was already eating her up. Abrielle wasn’t here; he would have left immediately, but he knew Evelyn wouldn’t last long in the smoke. She was already delirious. He got off at midnight immediately and carried her...

"Your Highness," she coughed, barely holding onto her consciousness. "I am sorry I failed. They took her." She struggled to say, Cedric almost lost it, but he knew he had to stay level-headed to find her. "Has it been long?" He asked her as he placed her on Midnight’s back.

"I can’t remember how long but it’s been a while since they disappeared." His eyes darkened. "Take her to the main road away from the smoke."After securing Evelyn on the horse. He urged midnight to leave. The horse left immediately.

He didn’t need the horse, he was faster without it. A black mist covered him, and he disappeared. Cedric tracked her scent; next, he appeared a bit farther from where Evelyn was. There were horse hooves on the ground, they must have gotten far.

Her scent was strong here, he glanced around and spotted a piece of fabric covered with blood and half burnt. The fabric was her; he could recognize the strong strawberry scent, but the blood wasn’t her. It wasn’t his wife’s blood. Something was off

Grabbing the piece of cloth, he closed his eyes and then tracked her scent. She left on horseback. The black mist enveloped him again, and he disappeared again. This time, he appeared close to the river.

His heartbeat slowed, and the ache grew. Her scent was strong, but the trail ended here. Concealment, her scent was concealed. "Where are you?" He asked, she was gone. The pain in his heart grew. Why did it feel like she was gone forever?

His guess was that she boarded a boat but to where. He couldn’t track her, and it was making him lose his mind. He didn’t care if she wanted him dead or if she might love another all he wanted was just one thing. His selfishness wanted him to hold on to her because...

He could not imagine a life without his rebellious wife. He was truly hopeless, "ABRIELLE!!!" he hopelessly screamed.

Cedric could not track Abrielle’s scent again because the cloak she wore was concealing her presence.

The boat had successfully left the inland water; strangely, ravens could be seen flying off from the end of the river back into the woods. Abrielle turned around, seeing the land get farther; she bit her lips, a sad smile hanging on her lips. It could not be Cedric, could it?

It didn’t matter because there was no turning back.

The ship was waiting; since it would have been easily tracked from port, it had to wait on the sea. "We are almost there," she heard Zoltana say.

The boat stopped by the ship and a ladder was sent down. Zoltana climbed up first and then followed Abrielle with some assistance.

She got on the deck and something felt off. Zoltana stood rooted at a spot, shaking; Abrielle tried to assess the situation and realized immediately when she realized Zoltana had a sword to her neck, not just her but Sabrina, Zoltana’s relative who helped arrange the escape, was beaten and tied to a pole left unconscious.

"What is going on? " The princess anxiously asked. Her first instinct was to run. Someone immediately grabbed her from behind. "What do you think? There has been a change of plans princess."
