The Runic Alchemist-Chapter 557: God Hunt 11
Damian used another monster's ID to get some halfway through to the point of their maximum travelled distance from the Stone Mountain. If he extended his mana sense, he could sense the five powerful creatures and the Sun God from here. It was a bit away from the point where the Demon had initially started flying towards them, most likely sensing them.
Damian could sense the Demon flying back to his fellow lords. Now they just had to wait.
Everyone walked away alone or in pairs, doing the last bit of their pre-battle preparations. Damian stood still at the edge of the red mountain, his air shields blocking all the monsters from reaching them. Here, only King-rank monsters were in large numbers, and occasional Emperor-rank ones—but they were much weaker than what Damian and the others had made a daily habit of fighting hordes and hordes against. No one even acknowledged their presence.
Asher walked up to him, standing beside him quietly. Usually, the guy never shuts up. The possibility of dying was real even for him. They had waygate tools to exit if it came to that, but not everyone could get the chance to use them that easily. Both the activation and closing after passing through took time—seconds—but in the battle of such powerful beings, seconds mattered.
At last, Asher spoke up, 'Gathered enough experience to reach level 300 by now.. Don't think I am ever going to ascend further.'
Damian gave a reassuring smile and patted his sacrium shoulder. "One more day, and we will have an answer.."
'Why do I feel like you're more interested in killing the answer..?'
"For science, of course. What happens when you kill a God?" Damian replied.
'Science, of course..' Asher nodded sagely, going along with his bullshit.
Damian could have ascended, but he didn't want to. Increases in stats were almost meaningless for this fight. In case the fight was really difficult, he could do it in the middle of it to get some time to breathe and gain the necessary power to finish the job. Who knew—maybe fighting a Dragon King might unlock some paths that would never be possible for normal people..
The Demon took some 15 minutes, but finally, the guy was near the other three Lords. After another 20 minutes, all four Lords had gathered once again. Damian smiled. He knew the Demon might not be able to say anything if his third question worked—which it should have, since the spell was done—but he would still try to tell his companions about them in some other way.
"Let's go.." Damian said out loud, and all the highswords gathered near him.
Standing in a circle, they all shared a look. Before opening a waygate, Damian said, meeting all their eyes, "Whatever the outcome, people in our world will never forget your names. I will make sure of it. When the stars fade and the land trembles, we are the light that guides the lost home.."
They all froze for a moment, lingering in silence, then broke into smiles. The Highsword Oath.
It was the line Asael the Landbreaker had uttered in legends, spoken while facing the Chaos Inheritor Dragon—a creature on the verge of obliterating a forgotten city. Despite being only a third-ranker at the time, Asael had fought the Legendary-rank monster and come out alive, an act immortalized in songs.
They were about to do a somewhat similar thing.

Veltrax could not begin to describe the things he was feeling. Humiliating, terrifying, and completely illogical.
He fought a barely fledgling Demon kin and lost? Impossible as it was, the amount of mana this creature could produce was baffling—and the worst thing? The Demon's mana never seemed to get lower at all? How in the hell was that possible!?
That was all beside the point, though. Even more strange was the fact that he was still alive and back in his Obsidian ruins, unharmed. Who were these humans led by a weakling Demon? No, he was by no means a weakling.. He survived Veltrax's attack head-on and came out without a single injury.
Veltrax flew really slow, making sure and double sure that they weren't following behind—but even if they were.. it shouldn't be easy for them to cross through so many monsters, many of which were part of his eyes and ears.
Immediately after coming back to his ruins, Veltrax called for another meeting. Zenthari, T'korran, and Droquar all gathered near him once again. However, the second Veltrax opened his mouth to talk about these intruders, suddenly he felt like he had lost all control of his tongue—he could not utter a single word.
"What is it? Spit it out.." Zenthari asked, getting annoyed.
"Something is wrong.." Droquar's loud voice echoed.
Suddenly, Veltrax felt like he was being stabbed from the inside. A strong mana signature came right beside from him. All four of them immediately got alert, but the familiar blue portal opened instantly. Veltrax's body went cold. How could he be so stupid!? Of course—the portal!
He was so distracted by the sudden mercy and unexplained mana usage, he completely forgot the giant leap in distance the strange portal had provided him.
Veltrax summoned his scythe and swung at full power using the accumulated rage at the portal entrance—but no one came out. Another blue portal opened behind him, his companions warning Veltrax. But the second his attention left the first portal, the five humans along with the Demon and the golem leapt out of it.
Veltrax sensed the abominable Demon behind him and he quickly shot forward—being this close to the bizarre Demon was not wise without any distractions. But to Veltrax's absolute shock, instead of flying in a straight direction near the other Lords, who were ready to launch their attacks, his trajectory shifted upwards—and once again his eyes widened in horror! That damned gravity spell!

Veltrax started chanting the portal spell while being flung into the sky at continuously increasing speed. However, even after using the portal and going 20 meters in any direction, it did not stop or slow down his ascent.
His companions called out to him, but before anyone could fly up to help him or cast any other spell, the humans began their attack.
