Chapter 51 -50: Throwing oneself into somebody’s arms?

Shen Chuwei realized that all the medicine eaten in ancient times was Traditional Chinese Medicine; where would they have seen Western medicine?

She explained, “Your Highness, this is a special medicine that works faster than Traditional Chinese Medicine.”

“Special medicine?” Xiao Jinyan looked at the bowl of clear water in front of him, hesitating for a while.

Seeing Xiao Jinyan’s hesitation, Shen Chuwei thought he was afraid to drink it.

“Your Highness, I will drink a mouthful first to show you.”

“There’s no need.” Xiao Jinyan lifted the bowl to his lips and took a sip.

The taste was a bit strange, but he tilted his head back and finished it in one gulp.

Placing the tea bowl down, he picked up the handkerchief that Shen Chuwei handed over to wipe the corners of his mouth.

Shen Chuwei set the bowl back on the table, turned around and walked over to the bed, her gaze falling to the cotton quilt on the ground, where she saw two banded kraits.

Looking at Xuetuan beside her, she noticed the cat was elegantly licking its fur.

It was not hard to tell that the two snakes had been killed by Xuetuan.

She suddenly recalled Xiao Jinyan’s actions earlier; it was because there were poisonous snakes behind her that he had held her, intending to save her.

What had she just been imagining?

Xiao Jinyan said, “Qin Xiao, dispose of the snakes.”

Qin Xiao outside the tent lifted the tent flap and strode in, circled around the screen, and saw the two snakes on the ground.

He swiftly disposed of the snake carcasses and then changed to a clean set of bedding.

Xiao Jinyan instructed, “Sprinkle some realgar around the perimeter of the tent, and then investigate who let the snakes in.”

“As you command.” Qin Xiao bowed and retreated.

Before stepping out, he glanced at Shen Chuwei, who was dressed in traditional clothing, a hint of puzzlement flickering in his eyes.

After Qin Xiao left, Xiao Jinyan lay back down on the bed and turned his head towards Shen Chuwei, who was still standing there, “Aren’t you going to sleep?”

“Your Highness, I’m coming.” Shen Chuwei moved forward two steps, took off her shoes, climbed onto the bed and slipped under the blanket to lie down.

After lying there for a bit, she turned over to face Xiao Jinyan.

It was probably habit by now; she didn’t feel secure sleeping without facing Xiao Jinyan.

Xiao Jinyan watched Shen Chuwei’s actions; almost every time they shared a bed it turned out this way, “Go to sleep.”

“Yes.” Shen Chuwei responded.

Now, Xiao Jinyan felt exceptionally tired and struggled to ward off the drowsiness.

He closed his eyes and fell asleep.

Shen Chuwei watched him for a while, then pulled up the quilt to cover him properly before she closed her eyes to sleep.

In the middle of the night, Shen Chuwei was awakened by the cold.

As soon as she opened her eyes, she saw Xiao Jinyan had tossed off the quilt, and she could hear a series of muffled groans, the kind emitted when someone is in extreme discomfort.

She remembered how she was when she had a high fever, also moaning uncomfortably in the middle of the night.

She pulled the quilt back over him, reached out to touch his forehead, and found it was covered in sweat.

His fever had dropped some, and without any complications, it should break completely tonight.

Shen Chuwei stared at Xiao Jinyan for a while before lying down again to sleep.

When Shen Chuwei woke up the next day, she found herself sleeping close to Xiao Jinyan, the absence of a pillow in her arms being the reason.

Fortunately, Xiao Jinyan had not woken up yet nor noticed her proactive “embrace.”

She observed Xiao Jinyan’s complexion, which was much improved from the day before.

Then she reached out to touch his forehead again and, finding the fever had passed, she got out of bed reassured and began to dress.

No sooner had Shen Chuwei left, Xiao Jinyan opened his eyes.

He had slept so soundly the previous night that he was unaware when Shen Chuwei had cuddled up to him.

On her way out of the tent, she was pulled aside by Qin Xiao, “Young brother, what happened to His Highness last night?”

“Nothing much,” Shen Chuwei shook her head.

“By the way, Brother Qin, could you make some more congee for His Highness?”

“No problem, I’ll have Weichi cook it.” Qin Mu turned to find Weichi.

Seeing Shen Chuwei come in, Xiao Jinyan said, “Your medicine worked well, I’ve already broken the fever.”

Shen Chuwei replied, “Your Highness, that was a folk remedy; it works quickly.”

Xiao Jinyan had sweated profusely the night before, and his skin felt sticky and uncomfortable.

“Let Qin Xiao prepare the water, I wish to bathe,”

Shen Chuwei, following the order, went to find Qin Xiao to get the hot water ready.

By the time Xiao Jinyan had finished bathing, the congee was also ready.

Shen Chuwei had prepared two side dishes in advance and brought them over, placing all the dishes onto the table one by one before turning to fetch the meat buns.

The meat buns and braised pork had been fetched by Qin Xiao.

Since Xiao Jinyan had just recovered from a fever and could not eat greasy food, all four meat buns and the braised pork were hers.

Shen Chuwei, happy and content, was on her way back.

Before she reached the entrance of the tent, she saw Lady Chang leisurely approaching with Dongmei in tow.

Dongmei had seen Shen Chuwei coming out from the Crown Prince’s camp early in the morning and had hurriedly informed Lady Chang.

Even the usually patient Lady Chang, upon hearing this news, became somewhat restless and thus arrived at the Crown Prince’s camp early in the morning.

“Sister, you worked hard yesterday looking after His Highness despite the fatigue from the journey.

It must be tough on you,”

Seeing Lady Chang, Shen Chuwei curtseyed, “Sister Chang.”

Lady Chang scrutinized Shen Chuwei’s attire from head to toe—despite being a woman, she dressed as a man, a tactic truly nauseating enough to seduce anyone.

“As a servant of the Crown Prince, Sister Shen should not be too prideful due to favoritism.

Some tactics should be exercised in moderation, as His Highness will not always indulge you like this.”

Shen Chuwei said, “Compared with Sister Chang, I still have a long way to go.”

She, a mere Fengyi, certainly didn’t dare to have a tiff or cold war with His Highness ~

Lady Chang clenched the handkerchief in her hand tightly, not expecting Shen Chuwei to speak so candidly, leaving her unable to retort.

“What do you mean by that?”

“Nothing much; His Highness is waiting for breakfast, so I’ll go inside first,” Shen Chuwei refused to get involved in their matters and walked in with the meat buns.

Lady Chang was the Empress’s niece.

From her selection into the draft to her acceptance and residence in the East Palace, everyone else was sycophantic towards her.

Except for Shen Chuwei, who always opposed her and openly rivaled her for favoritism.

“Young Mistress, Shen Fengyi only dares to treat you with such disrespect because of His Highness’s favor.

She doesn’t even take the Empress seriously.

Continuing like this will eventually anger His Highness and the Empress,” Dongmei protested indignantly.

Lady Chang’s thoughts quickly turned, and she realized that although His Highness truly doted on Shen Fengyi, her aunt did not like Shen Fengyi at all.

With her aunt’s intervention, getting rid of Shen Fengyi would still be quite easy.

Having understood this, Lady Chang then walked inside, handkerchief flapping.

Shen Chuwei placed the congee and side dishes in front of Xiao Jinyan and set her own table with a bowl of congee, a plate of meat buns, and a plate of braised pork.

Xiao Jinyan glanced at the meat buns and braised pork in front of her,

Shen Chuwei immediately explained, “Your Highness, you’ve just recovered from fever and should not eat greasy food.”

Xiao Jinyan curled the corner of his mouth slightly, “Can you finish all four?”

Shen Chuwei replied, “Of course, wasting food is shameful.”

“Eat then,” Xiao Jinyan said, picking up his chopsticks to take some pickled long beans and put them in his bowl, eating them with his congee.

His fever had subsided, and his appetite had returned somewhat, but it would take more time for his spirit to fully recover.

“Alright,” Shen Chuwei took a bite of the meat bun.

Lady Chang stepped forward, curtseying, “Concubine greets Your Highness and wishes you everlasting wealth and peace.”

Xiao Jinyan indifferently spoke up, “Sit down and speak.”

“Thank you, Your Highness,” Lady Chang straightened up and sat down at the table, her gaze falling on it.

She noticed Shen Chuwei arrogantly placing all the meat buns and braised pork in front of herself, completely disregarding His Highness.

“Sister Shen, how can you let His Highness eat plain congee and simple dishes while you eat meat buns and braised pork?”
