Chapter 310: Gift (1)

A month later.

"We must be quick before they close the doors," Hazel informed Daisy.

"After the king’s threat, they would be fools to try to lock you out again," said Daisy.

Daisy could not forget the memory of the king going to the court after he learned that they were turning the queen away from sitting in to listen to what was being discussed. She was certain that the palace would see blood spilt soon if the men against Hazel being involved in the court continued to try blocking her.

"I don’t want Tobias to have to come this time so I want to get there before the doors close. Being late gives them a reason to think that I am taking this lightly. I shall not give them anything to criticise me with," Hazel said, holding up the sides of her dress so she could walk faster.

Daisy blushed, rushing to try to block Hazel’s exposed skin from her dress being raised. What was it that Hazel had to be present to hear? "Please do not fall. The king would have my head if you did," Daisy cried inside.

Hazel continued to run as she entered the court and only slowed down when she reached the room she was looking for. "Gentleman," she greeted the town guards outside who were always surprised to see her here.

Daisy smiled as she passed the guards. They scared her but she could not look weak when she was here with Hazel.

"My queen," Mark stood to greet Hazel. He welcomed her visit to the court once more as he always got to witness his peers looking like they would turn into apples from how red they got.

Mark didn’t know how many times since Hazel started to make her voice heard he had to listen to a speech about the queen’s role in the palace. Hazel was getting under the old farts skins and he liked every moment of it.

So far, the meetings Hazel tried to sit in were for small matters but Mark had heard the king say that she wanted to be present when it came time to do the truce for the border. That day should be interesting.

The men here were already furious that she was here for these meetings so Mark expected a fight when she tried to get involved with war.

"It is good to see you again, Mark. The room is quite empty today. Was the meeting moved or are they taking a stand because they knew that I was coming today?" Hazel questioned, looking at all the empty chairs.

Mark was the only man from the court present though three more were to be here as they should be looking over the matter.

"Perhaps they are sick. I will send them some medicine so they can be here the next time you come," said Mark.

"That is kind of you. Well, it is their loss as I want this meeting to continue as planned. They will find a way to find out what is discussed. Are you going to join me or stand there all day?" Hazel asked Mark since was yet to move even after she walked by him to get to her seat.

Hazel didn’t care if there was one man in the room or twenty. She would listen to what she came here for and offer her opinion. frёewebηovel.cѳm

It was going at a slow pace for the men who helped with the palace affairs to get used to a queen coming here and Hazel knew she had to be patient as she was changing history. In time, they would get used to her presence and return to do their jobs.

"Forgive me for moving so slowly," Mark replied, closing the door to keep the conversation private. "This is concerning what we have discovered so far with the girls that have gone missing. As you know, the duke is in charge but I am also following closely. We are also to discuss the exam for those who will get the chance to fill positions in the court."

"I have something to share on the latter. I’ve already discussed with the king that we should allow women to take the exam as well. I know that it is quite the leap since it is only men in the court, but we should give everyone who wants to be here a chance," Hazel proposed.

Most of the women in town got married to have husbands take care of them but there were still some who had to work to provide for their families. If being in the court was something they wanted to try their hand at, they should be able to take the exam.

"That is ambitious to fight for now when the men are already pushing for you to stay out of the court. Don’t get me wrong, I am quite interested in this idea, but I worry that you might have a lot on your plate," Mark said, knowing this could turn ugly.

"It is a lot to push for now but I find now to be a good time with the exam coming up. After all the changes we had to make to the court because of many of your peers being greedy and not thinking of the kingdom’s best interest, we need something new," said Hazel.

"They shall take the same test as everyone else and be marked the same way. Should they pass, I don’t see any reason for them to be turned away. Being a woman is not a reason I want to hear any longer. It is old and used far too many times by men who just sit on their ass. We are in for a bit of noise when the order goes out, aren’t we?" Hazel asked.

Mark smiled as he couldn’t agree more. "I happen to like how you stir up the court, Queen Hazel. I will make sure to tell my peers of the new changes and deal with their questions or complaints."

"Thank you. Now, what did you find about the missing women?" Hazel asked, ready to move on.
