Tobias stayed with Hazel for as long as he could, listening to what more she had to share with him or what she planned to do when she returned to the palace. He planned to support Hazel with the changes she wanted to make.
He would do anything to get her from being in this space of wanting to harm herself.
Tobias stayed at the Collins estate until Hazel fell asleep and then slipped out as he was not finished with what he had to do in the palace. As he promised, there was more cleaning up before Hazel’s return.
As a new day fell upon the palace, news quickly spread of Grant’s death, men from the court being thrown into the palace dungeon to be later hanged, and the queen’s maid.
"Tobias," Liam said as he knocked on the door.
"Would it hurt you to address me as your king?" Tobias replied though he didn’t mind.
"You’ve sent away everyone who came addressing you in other ways. We need to talk about why you have me here. I think I have solved what happened to the maids. Well, not Hazel’s maid as yet," said Liam.
That one was still a mystery and he didn’t know what happened to the maid named Jane.
"Do you have time for it now?" Liam asked since there were a lot more problems that needed the king’s attention. Liam was yet to return home to learn what the others thought of Grant’s death.
Liam wasn’t celebrating Grant’s death, but he also wasn’t mourning. He was in a place of feeling nothing.
"I was going down to the dungeon and then the court but that can wait. So, you’ve found the culprit?" Tobias asked, looking forward to good news. He would love to catch all these bastards right now before Hazel’s return.
"I haven’t had a chance to enter the room assigned to him, but all signs point to a doctor after what some maids shared with me. I have been watching him since I-"
"Tobias!"
Liam stopped talking as the former queen entered the room.
Tabitha went straight to Tobias and hugged him. She had been worried all night long after learning that he had gone out to fight. "You scared me. Why didn’t you leave the fight to your men? You did not need to join them."
Tobias signalled for Liam to leave. He wouldn’t get to hear what Liam had to say without any interruptions with his mother and now his father entering the room.
Liam made a quick exit out of the room.
Tabitha inspected Tobias to see if he was hurt. "You don’t need to go out and fight anymore. You are the king."
"I went to defend my wife and it is not like I ended up fighting. Kenneth made way for us. You can calm down," Tobias said, not needing her panicking added to his plate.
"We have to deal with the Hensons at once," said Tabitha.
"The Henson we needed to deal with is already dead. I’ve already sent out an announcement to be posted all around town that Kenneth and his sons are to be rewarded for their help. Do not go around saying otherwise as it will make many believe that there is something more to them being traitors," Tobias said, hellbent on keeping his promise.
"I do not see Kenneth being a traitor," Jeffrey spoke up. Grant came as a surprise but Jeffrey knew Kenneth better to dismiss talk of him being a traitor.
Tabitha scoffed, not ready to believe it. How certain were they that Kenneth didn’t put on an act and killed Grant to take suspicion off of him? "I think we should still look into them."
"Mother, Kenneth handed me his sword to end his father. Kenneth had the manpower to turn on me but he did not. Do not go on to speak of him being a traitor. Your words influence others and this could spread. I have a promise to keep," said Tobias.
He would not allow his mother to be the reason Kenneth had to pack his life up and leave town.
"I will still be wary of them. There might be more of Grant’s followers still in the palace waiting for the moment to get revenge. You must be careful. Honestly, if I had known this was what his plans would be back then, I would have-"
"What? What did you just say?" Tobias questioned, interrupting his mother. "What plans did you know of and when?"
Not long ago he learned of Grant’s plans from Grant himself and only shared them with Kenneth and then with Edgar. No one he shared what Grant told him would have passed it on to his mother. Tobias kept his father out of it because he would eventually tell Tabitha who would make it known to Hazel.
So, what plans did his mother know of?
Tabitha quickly realised her mistake. She had never shared that she knew of Grant wanting to get Linda on the throne. That was back before the rumours started and she still disliked Hazel.
"It is nothing," Tabitha attempted to brush it off.
Unfortunately, Tobias wasn’t going to let her do so. "What plans did you know of? Did you know what he was doing to Hazel?"
Tobias would like to think that she didn’t hate his wife so much that she would stand by and allow that to happen. Other than the failed dinner they had, Tobias had the assumption that his mother and Hazel had worked on their relationship.
"What plans did you know of?" Tobias repeated, his voice getting louder with each word. Her silence led him to believe that she knew something of what Grant was planning to do.
"Tabitha," Jeffrey said, also wanting her to speak. She had done all kinds of things, but his wife wouldn’t go so low to know what was happening to Hazel and not say anything.
Regardless of Tabitha’s thinking that Hazel wasn’t respectful enough, Hazel was still their daughter-in-law. Tabitha was to protect Hazel just as she was to protect Sofia. They were a family now.
"You are misunderstanding. I didn’t know he was the reason behind Hazel not having a child. I just knew that he seemed willing to do what was necessary to make Linda one of your women," Tabitha answered. She didn’t plot with Grant.
"When was this?" Tobias questioned. If this was around the time when he heard about it from Grant, he might be able to forgive her for not sharing this with him.
It wasn’t possible that his mother knew about Grant’s intention long before he did and said nothing. Especially during the times he welcomed Grant into the palace. His mother would not steal the chance for him to have a child all because Hazel wasn’t her choice.
Tabitha thought back to the day she had spoken to Grant. She could only think of the selection so it had to be some time after the wedding. "Perhaps three years ago."
Tabitha had forgotten that back then she didn’t care if the heir came from the daughter of the Wallace or Henson family.
