"Why do you look so tense? I thought you would be happy to be out of the palace," Hazel said, looking at Tobias on the other side of the carriage.
Hazel was excited to attend another winter party held by the Hensons. It was unfortunate that Linda and most of her family would not be present but Hazel still looked forward to being out of the palace.
"I am happy," Tobias said, smiling to not worry Hazel. "I would have just preferred that our time out the palace would be with us alone instead of having to go see a room full of annoying bastards. Why do you enjoy this party?"
"I have been going since I was a child and it has always been fun. I got to run around outside with Linda while the guests were inside drinking. You were there a few times," Hazel said.
"Against my will and now it still feels like that. Do you mind if we part early? Linda is not there so you would not have as much fun and you know Edgar will find a way to leave fast so you won’t have the duchess for long," Tobias reminded Hazel.
"That is true. Then when the duchess leaves, I shall leave. We would just need to give our goodbyes and apologies to Grant. It is a bit odd that Kenneth took his family out of town. They are always here," Hazel said, still trying to figure out what was happening with the Hensons. "Linda has informed me that there is conflict in her family."
Tobias feigned ignorance. "It is best that we don’t get involved in whatever it is. Do not pry by asking Grant."
"I was not going to. I don’t want to make it worse by asking questions. I simply hope that they can overcome it as they shouldn’t be at odds. I hope it is not why Linda is not present. My mistake. I shouldn’t ruin the night by talking about someone else’s troubles," Hazel apologised.
"I was not upset by it and you have forgotten that one of her brothers remains with us inside the palace," said Tobias.
Liam had gotten started on finding where the maids were going. He didn’t have an answer yet, but Tobias enjoyed that there was a start to an ending with no more maids disappearing.
"Yes. All the maids were unable to do their work with him walking around. I have heard Valerie complaining and yelling to get them back to their work. It has been fun," Hazel chuckled.
"Perhaps it wasn’t my best idea to put a bachelor in my palace, but at the same time, he can charm them to get answers about where the others have gone. I am hoping to get some answers about what happened to Lynn," Tobias said as he was not yet finished with finding the answer.
Hazel’s laughter stopped after the mention of Lynn. She had not forgotten Lynn. "I would like to visit her grave and place some flowers. It’s been so long since I called her family to the palace. I hope they are doing well with the money I have sent."
"It is already more than enough that you have done considering that it wasn’t your fault."
"It still feels like it was. No one would have targeted her if she wasn’t my maid," said Hazel.
"None of you other maids have been hurt. It might have been a bit of conflict she had with someone else or the person harming the maids is behind this. My mother still wonders what happened to Jane. We will find this person and make them pay with the most gruesome death," Tobias promised.
He would not let anyone get away with taking innocent lives in his palace.
Hazel looked out the window at the homes they were passing. "What is becoming of this town? A murderer in the town and the palace. They are still walking around without anyone to guard them," Hazel said, noticing a few women alone. "Perhaps they have no choice but to be alone."
"They should not need to be worrying about taking a walk because some crazy bastard wishes to take them. This town will be safe again. Hopefully, it will be soon. We have arrived," Tobias said just as the carriage entered Grant’s gates.
His guard was up since he had entered enemy territory. He planned to find Edgar as soon as possible so they could both look around at who was attending and make an agreement on who they would visit for a private talk.
When the carriage stopped, Tobias helped Hazel out of it and then held her hand so they could walk together. Though it was Grant’s home they were walking into, Tobias loved seeing Hazel relaxed and excited to be out of the palace. Hazel was in better spirits after their talk and now he saw her smiling more.
"Announcing the king and queen, Tobias and Hazel Castro."
Hazel looked around the room, ignoring the gazes of those who either inspected her appearance or were plotting when they would approach her or Tobias. She was only interested in finding the duchess or the host.
"Edgar!"
Hazel was grateful that Tobias had been quick to find the couple but that didn’t last long with what he said next.
"Where are you two coming from? A little quick one in the bathroom? I remember those good days where-"
Hazel had to step on Tobias’s shoes to stop his loud mouth from embarrassing the couple. Edgar was annoyed by Tobias being somewhat loud while Alessandra seemed like she wished to find a rock to hide underneath.
Tobias cleared his throat, not making any effort to move his shoe to end the pain of Hazel’s heel. "Before I was so rudely interrupted I was going to say that I remember the days when I couldn’t stay away from my wife during the early days of our marriage. You young folk have it nice."
"We’re the same age, you idiot."
Hazel drowned out the conversation between the two bickering men who couldn’t do without each other and focused on Alessandra. Alessandra was dolled up even more than the last time Hazel saw her. "Alessandra, it has been so long since I have seen you. Did you enjoy your trip out of town? What was it like?"
Hazel was a tad bit jealous that Alessandra could just up and leave town with Edgar when she wanted. To go out of Lockwood was a great treat. Hazel had missed Alessandra during that time but she was fortunate to be seeing Alessandra in the palace tomorrow along with a lot of young women from all over the town.
They would sit in one big room, have tea, and share gossip.
