Chapter 44: The Dungeon and the Truth

Now, the nobles were conveniently handing him an opportunity.

Darius didn’t even want to think about what came next.

Right now, the most important thing was to check the dungeon and confirm their suspicions.

If the real Seoryun was imprisoned there, then everything else would naturally fall into place.

Unlike the others, Illiya wasn’t particularly affected by Darius’s near-threatening words.

Back in the Elven Forest, he had heard similar warnings from his elders countless times.

After hearing them so much, he had built up an immunity.

Was this the legendary concept of fighting poison with poison?

Illiya remaosilent.

Among the four people present, Eoryun was actually the most shaken one.

He had gone from elation to dread in an instant—it felt like falling from heaven straight into hell.

After years of running wild in Haneulseong City, he had nearly forgotten that the place he lived in was just a small town.

And to everyone else, the prestigious Young Master of the Taeharin Family was nothing more than an insignificant bug, no different from a commoner.

Darius’s words snapped him back to reality, and for the first time, a sense of urgency washed over him.

He finally realized that this wasn’t a game, nor was it child’s play.

What they were doing was extremely dangerous—if they got caught, they could very well lose their lives.

Earlier, he had been misled by his companions’ casual attitudes and had completely forgotten that Darius was a close friend of the real king and that Illiya and Drow were both fiercely protective elves.

The more he thought about it, the more he felt utterly insignificant.

Help! Does this mean I’m the easiest one to bully in this group?

Luckily, Eoryun wasn’t the type to dwell on sadness.

After silently shedding imaginary tears for two seconds, he flipped the page in his mind and moved on.

"This is all your fault for acting so relaxed! You completely led me astray!" Eoryun huffed, his reasoning weak but his tone firm. "I almost forgot that one of you is the real king’s close friend, and the other two are incredibly overprotective elves. So you all have to protect me—the weak and helpless one!"

"You have to protect me!" Eoryun emphasized again.

Illiya: "..."

Drow: "..."

Darius: "..."

I’m never been this speechless in my life.

Darius closed his eyes for a moment, forcing himself not to look at a certain young master who gave him a headache.

He finally understood why Bearnard had dumped Eoryun on him—this troublesome thing really wasn’t something anyone would want to keep around.

"Since everyone now understands the severity of the situation, let’s hurry up and make good use of our time," Darius said seriously. "Let’s pray that the Goddess of Luck is on our side. I really hope that fake king didn’t mess with the dungeon’s location—otherwise, we’re the ones who’ll have a headache."

Illiya nodded his head in agreement.

Praying to the Goddess of Luck actually worked, otherwise he wouldn’t have met such an interesting group of people.

Goddess of Luck, please bless me.

Fortunately, the Goddess of Luck came through once more.

Darius breathed a sigh of relief as he looked at the dungeon entrance before him.

The fake king was indeed a very cautious man—he still didn’t dare reveal his true nature even after more than ten years.

He could only slowly change minor details, like replacing the original palace decorations.

"This is the dungeon entrance?" Illiya stared in silence at the grass-covered hole in front of him.

Darius noticed it too.

But who was he? Someone who had long maxed out his thick-skinned skill.

Darius put on a serious face and said with absolute sincerity, "The most dangerous place is often the safest. Besides, a dungeon entrance overgrown with weeds makes for the perfect disguise, doesn’t it?"

Illiya neither agreed nor disagreed.

He simply stood quietly at the side, staring silently at the man.

Darius felt the elf’s gaze fall on him, and the pressure on him suddenly increased.

A guilty feeling spread in his heart, making him afraid to look back.

His instincts told him: it was best not to look back.

After all, he might see something in the elf’s eyes like "I’m just watching you make stuff up," and that would make his clumsy cover-up feel ridiculously stupid.

Trying to save face, Darius quickly changed the subject and took the lead, heading toward the dungeon entrance.

He reached out and pushed aside the grass around the opening, then climbed in.

With a thud, a landing sound echoed.

Darius’s muffled voice came from inside the hole: "Come in. Just be aware that there’s a short drop from the opening to the ground—about three meters or so. Just be careful."

Illiya bent down, parted the grass, and let sunlight stream into the hole.

He could see the silhouette of a certain red-haired swordsman below faintly.

He hesitated for a moment, then looked down at the white robe he was wearing—and fell silent.

Question: will wearing white clothes while crawling through a hole get them dirty?

The answer was obvious: Yes.

Already mid-air, Illiya thought so to himself.

The remaining person and elf outside the hole didn’t hesitate for long either—they jumped down as well, stirring up a cloud of dust when they landed.

Illiya silently stepped back a few paces, trying to increase the distance between them.

Elves are clean freaks! Even if his white clothes were already stained with dirt, he didn’t want them to suffer a second round of damage!

After the little interlude, Darius very consciously took the lead again—his sense of self-awareness was borderline offensive.

Looking at the pitch-dark tunnel ahead, Illiya silently pulled out the magic illumination crystal that Bearnard had given him from his bracelet.

With the light returning, Darius suddenly had the same thought as Bearnard, who was far away in Haneulseong City.

"Why hasn’t the top approved the proposal to replace kerosene lamps with magic crystals?" Darius muttered in disbelief. "The king definitely has problems!"
