Chapter 710: Sometimes, we need to step back before rushing forward again

What was my whole reason for doing this again?

World peace? World harmony? Helping the Hero fulfill his purpose? No! None of that! My sole reason for starting all of this was to gain a supporter when I confronted the Demon God later for my child’s custody.

But that plan went down the drain the moment I talked back to the Goddess.

Perhaps that was why I suddenly became so desperate and acted out of my mind.

"No!" I rushed toward the retreating flame, brushing past Natha. "We need to talk!"

"I don’t have time for this, Valen," the flaming figure hissed. "I’ll see you and your child on his hundredth day."

"What do you mean?! You’re here!"

I was about to rush and grab the flame, but Natha caught me first. "Sweetheart..."

"No, we need to talk! I had been doing all this--why do you think I had been doing all this?!" I turned toward Natha and glared at him. Shouldn’t he help me? Shouldn’t he want to finish this as soon as possible?!

"I know, sweetheart, but--"

"You promised me!" I clutched Natha’s lapel, couldn’t care less about who was there to witness me throwing a tantrum.

I was out of my mind. I was stressed. I was so exhausted staying away from my family to do things without being appreciated. The last thing I wanted was for my husband to not be on my side.

I grabbed him, clawed at him, throwing a vicious look at him--everything I would regret later. But at that moment, I was so frustrated and scared that he relapsed back to the Demon God’s influence even though he already gathered all seven keys.

Thankfully, my husband was a lovely, lovely demon. He held my face gently and caressed my cheek. "I know, sweetheart--but this isn’t the right place."

The nostalgic cold from his palm was able to slightly cool my head down and made me pause. "Not the right place?"

"Haa...I’m exhausted, boy," instead of Natha, I got a response from the Demon God, who let out a heavy sigh. "I’m sorry, okay? So let’s just meet as planned. You have other things to do anyway."

"Nothing is more important than him to me!"

"Yes," the red flame shaping the eyes of the figure swayed. "I can see that."

And with that last words, the flam vanished from the plaza.

"No--" I choked on my dry throat, almost falling as I tried to catch the vanishing smoke. "No..."

"Sweetheart," Natha caught me, trying to pull me back to his arms, but I was far too anxious to receive any sweet consolation.

"Mother!" I turned around toward the shimmering woman not far away, running to grab her arms and plead. "Mother..."

"Ssh...I know, my child," she caressed my head, and a cool breeze seeped into my heated mind. "But you have to understand; he is not in his territory," she said. "In fact, this place is quite hostile for him."

I looked around; now that my head was a bit clearer, I could feel the difference in mana sequence in the air, compared to the air in the demon realm. It was like how the air in the mountain and the beach felt very different.

How weird...it didn’t feel so different before--was what I thought until I remembered that the patron deity of the human realm was back, which meant the air was filled with her power.

And she wasn’t in a particularly good relationship with the Demon God.

"Oh..."

"And I don’t think you need to worry too much,"

I raised my head in confusion. "What do you mean?"

"Didn’t you hear him?" she smiled while stroking my cheek. "He said ’your child’, Valen."

My eyes widened, and I turned to look at Natha, who was smiling wryly at me. I bit my lips as guilty feelings started to fill my conscience. However, just one word did not give me enough assurance. "But, still..."

"If you’re still worried, you can just summon me like today," Mother said.

"I can?" I whipped my head back to her. "But...we’ll be in his sanctuary..."

And by the same logic we had here, the territory of a deity would weaken another deity’s power. Just like the Demon God experienced earlier, only maintaining the vessel already exhausting.

But she smiled and lightly tapped the Heart of the Forest on my head. "As long as you have this, you can call for me anytime."

Oh!

"I promise I will be there," she leaned down and kissed my forehead softly, before glancing at the golden statue, who was still conversing with the Hero. "I’ll even drag her with me if you want."

I glanced at the Goddess, who seemed to be trying hard to convince Jin to stay. "Uhh...I don’t know if she can help much," I said with a grimace. Recalling how I acted earlier...I didn’t think she would like me much.

And I didn’t like her either.

"Indeed," Mother smiled helplessly. "But you can bring Logos--I mean, Stan."

I gasped and turned toward the golem, who was already standing a few steps behind me before I realized it. "Really?"

"If you ask, Valen, I shall oblige," Stan nodded once.

"Thank you!" I hugged his cold, stone armor. It wasn’t as comfortable as Natha’s cold but felt friendly nonetheless.

Oh--I had to apologize to Natha.

"Then, I shall return," Mother patted my head for the last time. "Good job, my child. I’m proud of you."

"Thank you, Mother."

She smiled, and the shimmering woman shrunk to the size of a little bird, who slowly descended to my open palms. The soft, steady breathing told me Jade was sleeping.

"Oh, I guess he’s exhausted," I caressed the plump, colorful bird.

"That’s our cue to go home and get some rest ourselves," Ignis muttered, scooping Jade with its tail and keeping the little bird in the hood of my cloak.

Immediately after, a girl and a succubus in disguise tackled me in a hug.

"Val!" they each pinched one of my cheeks. "You did it!"

...not really, but...in this ’returning the Goddess’ scenario, I guessed we met a nice clear. I looked at Zarfa and smiled. "We did it."

"We did it!"

The one who responded was Aina, who jumped from the side and joined the fray. With their cheerful laugh, I couldn’t help but laugh too, feeling the heaviness lifted slightly from my heart. My mission was yet to be over, but I guessed we could celebrate this milestone.

And then I spotted Izzi behind Zia, along with Neel following closely--and couldn’t help but ask curiously. "When did you arrive?"

"I hitchhike your husband," he shrugged.

"But...what are you doing here?

"I’ll tell you later," he waved his hand and looked around. "What now?"

"Hmm..." I turned toward the human side--and what a coincidence, Avarash was walking toward us. "Bishop," I greeted him with a nod.

He smiled; the kind that a grandfather would give to a group of playing children. "It is a nice scenery," he commented. frёewebηovel.cѳm

"Right?" Zarfa grinned. "It shouldn’t have taken this long."

"It shouldn’t have," the Bishop agreed. "But now, we must persevere. There are still a lot of things to do."

"Right."

"Tonight, however, I suggest we have some rest," Natha chimed in, placing his hand on my waist. Well, I didn’t think there was a point in hiding our relationship anymore. He asked the Bishop. "Do you need help with security?"

Humbly, Avarash bowed his head. "If you shall provide it, Lord..."

"Natha."

"Oh, this is my husband," I straightened my back and introduced the demon.

"I reckoned," the Bishop said. His smile still looked a bit tense, but we couldn’t just expect everyone to accept everyone right away with this kind of generational enmity. "It saddened me to say it, but the power of the Templars and Midas is not sufficient to stabilize the current condition."

Zarfa nodded with a heavy sigh. "I guess..."

Yeah. I mean...the enemy wasn’t just the Holy Empire, but the rest of the kingdom colluding with the church. Even those who only got brainwashed with blind devotion might have a hard time accepting this situation right away.

"The demons shall stay tonight to help, and we’ll talk about the next step in the morrow," Natha said. "Heraz."

With the sound of a whistling wind, the shapeshifter appeared behind me and Natha, kneeling. "My Lord."

"Oh, Goddess!" Ian clutched his armor in surprise--and I could tell that the Bishop was trying hard not to step back in reflex. "Ah, I need to get used to this..."

"You heard me," Natha did not waste more time for explanation. "Cooperate with Bishop Avarash for now--although, I presumed you won’t be Bishop for too long."

The Bishop chuckled. "That is for Her Lady to decide."

Tsk--I clicked my tongue together with the Salamander on my shoulder. That Goddess kind of felt like a liability, but at least we had New Covenant as a compass for now.

"By your command," Heraz bowed his head again before disappearing--probably to check on the other demons.

"Are you returning?" Aina tugged on my sleeve.

"For now," I nodded. "I promised Shwa I won’t be too long."

"Alright..."

"Be careful," I whispered to my human friends. "The Goddess doesn’t like me much, so she might not like you."

Zarfa smirked. "Then she’ll be hated by her champion."

"Pfft--" I squeezed her cheeks in return. "Thank you, really."

"For what? We’re all doing this for ourselves," the girl shrugged.

I laughed and turned toward Izzi and Neel. "Are you coming?"

"Naturally," Izzi sighed. "We still have a lot of work."

I raised my brow inquisitively, but Zia had another concern. "Oh, I want to catch up with the girls..."

"While I’m working?" the elf widened his eyes in disbelief.

"You can do that tomorrow," I patted Zia’s shoulder. "But how are we going to return? Teleportation scroll?"

"Urk--" at the mention of the scroll, Neel clasped her mouth with a terrified expression, perhaps recalling the way she threw up not long ago.

The solution, surprisingly, came from Stan. "I’ll take care of that."

The golem raised his hand toward us, and a magic circle spread beneath me, big enough for five people and several mini creatures.

Izzi immediately gasped in amazement. "It’s the robocop and transformer’s child..."

"Whoa...the disrespect," Neel dragged the stunned elf toward the magic circle, together with Zia. "But I agree."

"What are you talking about?" the succubus tilted her head, but the magic circle was ready to send us home.

"Let’s go home!"

Chii!
