Chapter 21: Chapter 21

"Kid."

Alexis scrunched her face.

"Kid."

She flung her arm about to shake off whatever was disturbing, and the thing being Sereia, slammed her large paw on her head, shouting, "Wake up, ALEXIS!"

Alexis quickly shot up on the bed, chest rising and falling in heavy breathing. Her eyes snapped from side to side before her gaze fell on Reia, who was watching her with concern.

"Kid? Are you here?"

"Why did you scream my name?" she asked.

"Maybe because you sleep like a dead person!" Reia scoffed. "I’m not sure if I’m wrong or right, but I think you should already be heading out there."

"W-what do you mean?"

"Have you forgotten you work here?"

Her gasp slashed out of her lungs, and she launched out of the bed, rushing into the bathroom. "Why didn’t you wake me up sooner?!"

"Excuse me? I’m not your babysitter." Sereia jumped onto the sink counter and sat on it. "I don’t babysit. And I certainly won’t start with you."

"You could be a little nicer to me, you know." Alexis spat out the paste into the sink. "I don’t even understand why you’re my wolf if you don’t even like me."

"First of all, I wasn’t given a choice to be your wolf, kid. Secondly, who says I don’t like you?"

"Sure doesn’t look like it."

She turned, walking into the bathroom.

"Well, why don’t you try getting set with a girl you can’t even manifest with? It’s frustrating—it makes me feel weak because I’m not exactly your typical kind of..." Her words faded at the look on Alexis’s face, and she cleared her throat. "Alexis, listen, it’s not what you’re thinking. I’m not saying it’s your fault or that you are too weak to accommodate me, it’s just—"

"But I am."

"Alexi—"

"No, no, I understand. I would be frustrated too if I were stuck with someone like me, too weak to accommodate her wolf. You can’t even get away from me or anything. You are stuck to me even against your will, and I’m sure you would do anything to break away if you could, so for that I’m sorry. If I knew a way to free you, I would have done that and—"

"Alexis!" Reia snapped at her, rolling her eyes. "Will you calm down? You’re a big ball of emotions, you know that? I never said that I hate being stuck to you. Sure, it’s frustrating, but I’m already used to it. I mean, I may have never appeared to you, but it doesn’t mean I haven’t been around you since you first opened your eyes."

"What?"

Alexis blinked at her, grabbing the hem of Keelion’s shirt to take it off. "What do you mean by that?"

"Spirit wolves are already around their hosts when they are born, be they alphas, supreme alphas, betas, or omegas. Then at the age of sixteen is when their host can accommodate them—that’s when they then manifest with their host and become one."

She continued, "I tried manifesting with you when you turned sixteen, but I couldn’t. I didn’t understand why, and I still don’t. I thought maybe you and I weren’t compatible and I wasn’t the right wolf for you, because I’m what you call a dominant omega wolf."

"Dominant omega wolf?" Alexis stepped into the bathroom, proceeding to fill the tub.

"Yes. You and I are not like the typical omega wolves. Though we are very rare. I have only ever met one other dominant omega wolf."

"What is a dominant omega?"

Sereia smirked at her. "We are not very...submissive or passive like normal omegas. Rather assertive, which isn’t very likable."

"Is that why you’re so mean?" Alexis asked, climbing into the tub to bathe.

Reia’s left eye twitched, and she hopped into the bath opposite her. "You better watch your mouth, kid. Don’t forget I’m your wolf, which makes you the same as me. You’re a dominant omega too."

"I don’t think so."

"Yeah, because you’re a wimp right now. Wait till we merge. They will never understand how vulnerable it is to be separated from your wolf. If anyone were to hurt you, you wouldn’t be able to defend yourself, so you’re practically defenseless now. Not to mention you’ve had to pretend to be something you’re not your entire life while fearing for your life every day and night. So maybe you’re not even as wimpy as you think you are. You think those punks would be able to do it or get as far as you have, while having a horrible father like yours?"

"My father is not exactly so...bad, you know?"

"My dear goddess, you’re too nice for this world. You don’t want to know how many times I wanted to rip his throat in his sleep."

"Hey!" Alexis inhaled sharply.

Reia rolled her eyes before sighing. "All I’m saying is that even if others can’t see it, you’re pretty tough to me. They don’t know you or how cruel life has been for you. You’re strong, kid, not weak in any way. You don’t allow anyone to tell you you are, because you’re not. Besides, there is nothing to worry about. I’m right here next to you, and I’ll kill them before they hurt you."

Alexis stared at her and softly puffed out a laugh. "Maybe you do like me."

She hissed. "Don’t get ahead of yourself."

She broke into a full-blown laugh, washing her body.

"Deny it all you want, but you do. You’re just mean."

Sereia sighed under her breath.

"Anyway, if you want to distinguish dominant omega wolf like me, we are very differently colored from normal omegas, wolves in general, who are either brown or black."

"What does that mean?"

Alexis tilted her head.

"Sereia pointed at herself. "Dominant omega wolves like me are golden-furred, but like I told you, we are very rare, and I have only ever met one other of my kind. Also, supreme alphas are different colors as well."

"They are."

"Yes. They are white-furred. Standard alphas, betas, and omegas are either in brown or black."

Alexis moved closer to her, a curious look on her face. "Do you think Keelion is white-furred?"

"Definitely," Reia purred at the back of her throat as she moved up into her arms, curling herself into a ball. "It wouldn’t make sense if he weren’t."

"Barely anyone had ever seen him in his wolf form, but those who did said they’d never seen a wolf more terrifying. Nothing was mentioned about the color of his fur."

"Supreme alphas are naturally incredibly dangerous, Alexis." Reia yawned, shutting her eyes and relaxing at the touch of her finger combing through her fur. "It is why they rule. A pack with a supreme alpha is the strongest, and it’s why our pack is naturally the strongest. Do you know how many men Keelion can take on by himself?"

Alexis raised a brow. "Ten?"

"You are underestimating our mate, kid," she scoffed.

"Thirty?"

"Way off."

"Then...fifty?"

"Kid, Keelion can take on at least two hundred standard alphas by himself, and he would still beat them, though not very unscathed. But I think that should give you an estimate of how terrifying he is and why his father was even afraid of him."

Alexis swallowed thickly. "I...I heard his father stepped down when Keelion came of age at eighteen. Everyone knows it, I think. I heard it from my sister, Eve."

"Of course." Reia peeked open an eye. "The pack would naturally protest for Keelion to rise as their leader, after all, with him, no other pack will cross us, and none has since he took over. So it’s in everyone’s interest. I mean, supreme alphas are heavily rare, just like dominant omegas. For now, Keelion is the only existing supreme alpha, and...he’s our mate. Take a bit of pride in that, kid, because I sure do."

Alexis gulped again at that information, her gaze growing distant.

A man like Keelion mated to...something like her? What is there to take pride in?

He doesn’t even want to keep her.
