Chapter 625: Chapter 625 Cassandra’s Task
The third one, “Scythe of the Messenger of Death,” an active type of arcane technique.
This arcane technique is extremely similar to Shard’s “Moonlight Greatsword”; both conjure a spiritual weapon from the void, which is composed of elements and lies between the tangible and intangible.
While Shard’s “Moonlight Greatsword” is characterized by its extreme sharpness and special damage against evil creatures, the “Scythe of the Messenger of Death” hampers wound healing and inflicts special damage on undead and undead creatures.
Such arcane techniques are generally exceedingly valuable because the effects of the arcane technique grow significantly as the Circle Sorcerer’s own level increases, and they easily chain with other spirit runes the Circle Sorcerer possesses. If Priest Augustus hadn’t offered to provide this information for free, Shard would have had to pay no less than the cost of materials for rescuing the priest in gold pounds just to see information about this kind of arcane technique.
“This is quite interesting.”
Although Shard already possesses the “Moonlight Greatsword” and has a strong preference for sword-type weapons, mastering another weapon wouldn’t be a bad thing. The scythe also fits within the application range of the “Blade of Chaotic Space-Time,” and it is obviously longer than the “Moonlight Greatsword.”
“In addition to a spirit talisman, the learning conditions require a near-death experience, which is simple, as I have even truly entered death. Furthermore, it requires spellcasting materials, a small piece of black cloth, oh, that really is cheap.”
Shard turned to the next page:
“Ritual materials, 30 pounds (about 13.6kg) of black crystal, one imprint of the deceased, two deep-sea undead fish, Klein special steel…”
Apart from the black crystal, Shard hadn’t even heard of the other materials. So, he skipped the lengthy list of 17 types of materials and went straight to the last estimate:
“Since most materials are hard to circulate on the market, it’s difficult to estimate their price. But if one really finds a way to obtain these materials, then it would cost at least a five-figure sum in gold pounds?”
Shard didn’t need to count on his fingers to know that “five figures” meant tens of thousands. And as an outlander to this world, he hadn’t even witnessed transactions measured in “tens of thousands of pounds.”
He picked up the apple cider he had bought for three pence beside him and took a small sip:
“Too bad my wallet doesn’t allow. But this arcane technique is really good, I can consider learning it when I have the money later.”
The fourth one, “Guide to Death,” an active-type arcane technique, but it’s not offensive, and besides needing a non-Enlightenment type spirit talisman related to “Death,” it also requires any type of spirit talisman related to “Moonlight.”
This is an arcane technique related to the “Nether Moon” concept mentioned by Sister Delphine.
When used, the arcane technique doesn’t produce any external sound or light effects, and it has two effects in total.
In battle, it can greatly enhance damage against undead and undead creatures, and while under the moonlight, the effect of the arcane technique is further increased.
When facing lingering souls hesitant to leave, the arcane technique allows one to know the thoughts of the soul through touch and even gain fragments of memories. For weaker souls, they can be directly guided on their path, without needing Shard to make them realize things on their own and leave, like he did with the two ghosts in the graveyard.
This effect is somewhat similar to Sister Delphine’s own talent, which lets her understand a soul’s thoughts simply by “seeing” them, while this arcane technique requires the soul’s non-resistance and physical touch.
“This is quite nice too; combined with the necromantic effects of ‘Soul Echo,’ I’ll be able to learn much more when I come across corpses.”
Shard weighed the thought as he sat in the corner of a small tavern, lifting his cup for another sip. It was apple cider again since Midshire Fort’s apple cider was famous this season, being a local specialty:
“Besides, the increased damage against undead creatures, against powerful souls, it’s less about ‘guiding death’ and more about ‘forcing death.'”
What’s more, if “Soul Echo,” “Psychic Shockwave,” and “Guide to Death” were used together, Shard could not even imagine the intriguing effects that might result.
“You can try it out in the mountains the next time fog sets in.”
“No, no, no, I’m not that curious.”

Although it was not as remarkable as the “Scythe of the Messenger of Death,” this arcane technique was indeed fine.
More importantly, in strict terms, it could completely integrate into the Circle Sorcerer power structure Shard had constructed. His current battle style is centered around “Silvermoon” with “Space-Time” as a supplemental. Guide to Death successfully linked death with Silvermoon, and in the future, it would likely be influenced by other arcane techniques centered around “Silvermoon,” possibly even undergoing evolution-like phenomena similar to “Echo of Blood.”
He flipped through to the learning conditions and ritual materials, which didn’t pose any problem. However, Shard wasn’t planning to gather materials in Midshire Fort, as the learning materials included a high amount of undead and corpse materials, and he was somewhat concerned that the local corpse materials of Midshire Fort could be problematic due to the influence of the Interstice.
Since he was familiar with places in Tobesk anyway, it might be better to go to Mr. Copus’s Tomb Guardian cabin; perhaps the other party would give him a discount in Dorothy’s favor.
After selecting the arcane techniques he wanted to learn, Shard went to the House of the Blind to have Ms. Michelle notify Sister Delphine that he had important matters to discuss.
Thus, Shard once again met Sister Delphine on the third floor of the Cassandra Auction House on Saint Kara Avenue, and naturally, Granny Cassandra, the Grand Witch, was also present, given that this was her property.
Since Sister Delphine had chosen this place for the meeting, she presumably didn’t mind the witches hearing the following news, so Shard handed over the documents prepared by Priest Augustus to them.
The aged witch and the grey-haired nun silently perused the documents while the maids of the auction house served Shard tea and pastries. Maids who could appear on such an occasion were confidants of Granny Cassandra, and also Circle Sorcerers with witch powers.
And as arguably the oldest living Grand Witch, Granny Cassandra’s followers were evidently of higher quality than those around Miss Galina… because Shard even noticed that the brown-haired maid serving him tea was at least a 7-ring magician.
“Mr. Hamilton, where did you get this from?”
After a long time, the Old Witch finally asked.
Shard shook his head:
“I can assure the information is absolutely correct. I think even Miss Galina would not inquire about the origins of these materials.”
Seeing him bringing up Miss Galina, Granny Cassandra didn’t ask any further.
“Sister Delphine, I hope you can pass this information on to the True God Church, as to whether to obtain benefits from the church, that’s none of my concern.”
This wasn’t seen as a betrayal of the Church for Priest Augustus; he and Shard were both followers of Mr. Dawn, and the ones in charge of the Midshire Fort incident were followers of the Heathens, the God of Nature—”Lord of All Things.”
“So, what do you hope to get from me?”
The nun with grey-white hair asked, placing the document on the coffee table in front of her, and clasping her hands together on her lap. She appeared to be in her twenties, but her aura was that of a Sage who had seen through everything.
“You helped me save Priest Augustus without asking for anything in return. I believe, as you have said before, goodwill is a bond that, when passed on, will make the world a better place.”
Shard said with a smile, to which the nun nodded:
“This weekend, I will send a special kind of blood to the House of the Blind, remember to go and collect it.”
“Alright.”
Shard did not refuse this time.
These documents provided by Priest Augustus seemed to be of particular importance to the nun, so she took them and left. Shard intended to say his goodbyes as well, but Granny Cassandra stopped him:
“Wait a moment, young man, there’s something I’d like to talk to you about.”
Her expression was extraordinarily kind.
“Please, go ahead.”
“Don’t worry, it’s nothing dangerous. Galina has praised you before, saying that you are a very capable detective, so I would like to entrust you to go to Midshire Fort Mechanical Academy and investigate the whereabouts of an antique. Mr. John Dunn, the professor of folklore, is an old friend of mine. You can start by looking for him, and he will tell you the details.”
“Folklore?”
Shard had been wanting to visit the local professor of folklore to learn about Twin Worship, so he could attend to both matters at the same time.
“Is the antique an ordinary item?”
“Yes, otherwise, I would have sent a Circle Sorcerer to deal with it.”
Although Granny Cassandra was only the twelfth seat of the Witch Council, like Miss Galina and Miss Aphrola, she also had her own Circle Sorcerer forces.
“No problem.”
“Then as a reward, I will also give you a special type of blood. Some blood, although special, isn’t worth much.”
Shard only needed one kind of blood for the last banquet, and Sister Delphine had already promised to provide it. But just like the second banquet, where bringing an extra type of blood had benefits, it would surely be good to have an additional kind at the last banquet as well.
“No problem.”
He originally hadn’t decided whether to head into the hills to look for the Demon Hunter’s sword this afternoon or to visit the professor of folklore first, but now he didn’t need to consider it anymore.
“However, the Twin Gods… Even though the Old Gods have departed, perhaps the power of those gods might resolve the issues with Luviya and Dorothy.”
Miss Writer with golden hair and Her Highness the Red-Haired Princess were not twins by blood relation, but in Shard’s eyes, even real twins would not have such a tight connection.
Thinking of this, Shard became even more interested in understanding the “Twin Gods.” Even if it wasn’t helpful in uncovering the secrets of Midshire Fort, finding the third Chosen One, or even finding new Divinity, if he could help Lecia and Dorothy, it was something Shard always wished to do.
