Sons of a devil-Chapter 54: The quiet between the storm
Chapter 54 - The quiet between the storm
The cave had gone silent.
The oppressive heat had lifted, but the tension remained like smoke clinging to their skin. The boys sat around a flickering fire outside, their mother asleep in the tent behind them. Her energy had been drained, her sudden return costing her dearly.
Cain was silent, staring into the fire. His jaw clenched, his thoughts loud though he spoke no words.
Leo sat nearby, running his fingers through the grass like he could ground himself with nature. Eren sharpened a blade absentmindedly, not because it needed it—but because his hands needed something to do.
Selene returned from the nearby woods, a few berries and herbs tucked in her hands. She crouched beside Cain and placed a hand on his arm.
"Eat something," she said gently. "You've barely moved."
Cain didn't even blink.
"He looked like me," he whispered after a moment. "He talked like me. But it felt...wrong."
Eren stopped sharpening. "Because he is wrong."
Leo finally spoke, voice gruff. "He's not your reflection, Cain. He's your shadow."
Cain looked up, finally meeting his brothers' eyes. "What if the shadow wins?"
Selene leaned in closer. "Then we'll rip the sun from the sky and throw it at him."
A small laugh escaped Eren. "That's the most romantic threat I've ever heard."
Even Cain cracked a faint smile.
They needed that—light in the darkness.
Later, when the fire dimmed and the forest settled into silence, Cain slipped into the tent where his mother lay sleeping.
She looked so small now.
His warrior mother—who had defied a devil to save them—was curled under a threadbare blanket, her hands twitching in dreams.
He knelt beside her, brushing a stray hair from her face.
"I'm sorry," he whispered. "We should have found you sooner."
Her eyes fluttered open, cloudy but clear enough to see him.
"You were never lost, my heart," she murmured. "I followed you through the dark."
Cain swallowed hard. "He said we were made to burn the world."
"He lies," she said sharply, her voice gaining strength. "You were made to change it."
A pause.
Her eyes filled with tears. "You are the good he never expected."
Cain leaned forward, resting his forehead against hers. "I don't know if I'm strong enough."
"You don't have to be," she said softly. "That's why you have your brothers."
And just outside the tent, Leo and Eren leaned against the canvas, silently listening.
Eren whispered, "I hate when she makes me cry."
Leo snorted. "You cried when your sword broke."

"It was a sentimental sword."
"You named it Butterknife."
"Exactly. Sentimental."
Cain emerged moments later, eyes red but calmer.
Leo nodded toward him. "You good?"
"I will be," Cain said.
And they knew what that meant.
Not now. Not yet. But soon.
They stood together—three brothers, broken and rebuilding—beneath the same stars they'd chased since they were children.
And somewhere deep in the earth, beneath rock and bone and forgotten nightmares, the devil stirred.
But so did the sons.
