Chapter 57 -57 Battle Begins

Everyone became tense when the topic of safety came up.

Although these second-hand dealers had backing, they couldn’t withstand the thought of starvation. They preferred to feast today, even if it meant risking death tomorrow.

So, they were all exceedingly cautious. Some who lived farther away had already moved in, since there were empty rooms available in every building now.

They had gathered together again to think of more thorough measures to reduce danger.

After Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng left, they first went to inspect the transformer room. Seeing the turtle marks on the wall, both of them became highly alert and hurried home.

Unexpectedly, at the entrance to their building, they saw another turtle symbol on a stone pier, with the character “today” written beside it. It seemed Ding Weiguo was indeed very dutiful. If things went well, they would have to reward this righteous young man who loved spy dramas.

When they got home, Chen Shaonan came out to greet them before they even entered: “You saw it, right?”

Gu Pan nodded, “Saw it.”

Lu Ruisheng said, “Let’s go upstairs for a meeting.”

Everyone understood.

Chen Shaonan instructed Chen Lang to call everyone upstairs for the meeting through the intercom.

Soon, everyone arrived in room 901, closed the door, and then they could discuss important matters.

Gu Pan said, “You all must have seen the marks at the transformer room and the entrance. It looks like we’re in for a tough fight tonight.”

Lu Ruisheng said, “I already had a combat plan in place, which I will now explain to everyone.”

Gu Pan pulled out Lu Ruisheng’s battle plan from her pocket, which they had been perfecting for several days and kept in her “Space”.

Everyone grew serious, as the battle would be no easy feat.

Lu Ruisheng pinned the plan to the wall: “They haven’t scheduled a fight with us, probably because they’re wary. They suffered many casualties in the last battle, so they’re likely to attempt a surprise attack. The best time for an ambush is around three o’clock in the morning, so we need to get enough sleep beforehand.”

After saying that, he pointed to the drawn map and continued, “Since we’re prepared, we can’t all just stay at home and defend. We need to counter-attack. Panpan and I will strike from above while Cheng Yang and Teacher Chen will attack from below. Though the higher ground has the advantage, escape is more difficult. We’d need to get from the balcony of 901 down to 601. Panpan and I have more experience, so we’ll take the top. You all will block from below, and if it’s too much, retreat. Once out of the building, you have bombs which could take out a few at once. Dr. Feng and sister-in-law will hold the sixth floor, and Teacher Duan and Chen Lang will secure the seventh floor. We’ll attack them from multiple sides, wrapping them up like dumplings.”

Using bombs inside was out of the question because a collapse would kill everyone. However, outside wasn’t ideal either; with everything covered in snow, it was too easy for the enemy to hide and escape. They needed to wipe them out completely in one go.

It’s hard attacking an enemy’s stronghold where they’re well-defended, but an offered head was an opportunity not to be missed.

Gu Pan added, “We must protect ourselves; every one of us needs to use the bomb shields well. If we truly end up at a disadvantage, don’t hesitate to flee via the cableway. Life is of utmost importance. Our only requirement is to avoid injuries as much as possible and ensure survival.”

Cheng Yang, fidgeting with a gun, said, “Don’t worry, sister. This time they won’t return.”

Gu Pan said, “Today I’ll distribute some extra bullets to everyone. Though we can’t waste ammunition, we’re well-stocked. During combat, we can’t lack supplies of food and ammo. Once we win, we’ll have a barbecue.”

Chen Lang was visibly excited, “That’s great. I haven’t had barbecue in so long; I’ve almost forgotten what it tastes like.”

Duan Shumei knocked her son’s head lightly, “Remember what Xiao Gu said, safety first.”

Chen Lang replied, “Got it, mom. Don’t worry. I’m actually curious about the future in this apocalypse, so I’ll make sure to stay alive.”

Then, Lu Ruisheng reiterated some details and mentioned that they had Smoke Bombs, which could be used during their escape.

Gu Pan and his companions had different goals; they weren’t fighting for territory, just to survive.

After the meeting, everyone went home and took turns napping in advance, to be fully rested for the night.

By midnight, most had slept enough and woke up to prepare for the battle.

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng went up to 901, while Cheng Yang and Chen Shaonan hid in 501. Duan Shumei and her son guarded the 7th floor, and Dr. Feng and his wife were on the 6th floor. Everyone was equipped with riot shields and bulletproof vests and helmets, all essential for survival.

Maybe it was because of the moment, or maybe they had grown used to life and death, but they didn’t seem too nervous. After all, this was the path they had to take to stay alive.

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng had been taking turns with binoculars from one o’clock, keeping an eye on the ground below. Around two o’clock, Li Dong’s men arrived earlier than expected.

Lu Ruisheng quickly grabbed the walkie-talkie, “The enemy is downstairs, get ready for combat.”

Every person’s acknowledgment came through the walkie-talkie.

Li Dong’s group was not small—with about thirty people. They also came prepared, leaving two as lookouts at the entrance, and the rest followed Li Dong, armed, up the building.

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng had already taken positions between the 7th and 8th floors.

Li Dong’s men went directly to the 7th floor, seemingly prioritizing Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng.

On the 7th floor, Li Dong’s men started to pry the iron door open.

But as soon as they touched the door, one was struck by an electric shock. As he fell, someone next to him instinctively tried to help but ended up getting shocked as well.

Li Dong quickly ordered everyone to step back, knowing well that humans were also conductors; anyone who touched the electrified persons would suffer the same fate.

Just then, the burglar alarm went off, startling Li Dong and his men.

Li Dong cursed furiously, “Damn it, they’re not so simple,” and then called the electrician forward to cut the power.

At this moment, the people were gathered between the 6th and 7th floors, due to Cheng Yang’s whistle reporting on the situation below.

Hearing the whistle, Li Dong sensed something was wrong. Before he could react, Gu Pan shot down one of Li Dong’s men beside him.

Li Dong shouted, “It’s an ambush, retreat quickly!”

Gu Pan laughed and yelled, “You came easily, leaving won’t be so easy.”

With that, she shot at Li Dong; however, he was quick to dodge, and, amid the crowd, the bullet hit his arm instead of a critical spot.

Ruisheng joined in then, taking down two more of Li Dong’s men.

Many tried to retreat downstairs only to find their way blocked.

Cheng Yang and Chen Shaonan, wielding riot shields, had barricaded the exit. Three or four descending men were killed.

Li Dong’s men panicked. They had intended to launch a surprise attack, but now they were the ones trapped in the hallway. They had anticipated a battle with themselves besieging others, not being cornered in a hallway.

What shocked them even more was that bullets also flew from behind the 7th floor’s iron door. Li Dong quickly hid in a corner, not expecting such a bold strategy from just eight people. Didn’t they fear an attack from either above or below? How could two people resist?

Of course, seeing the fighting strength of the other side, he didn’t need to think anymore. Clearly, the other party had real capabilities, not just reckless bravery.
