Chapter 54 -54: The War of the Neighborhood
Three days later, in the forenoon, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng paid another visit to Shi Liang, who was nearly recovered and able to leave the house—an altogether piece of good news.
They also switched supplies once more; this time, “Space” was extended by an hour and twenty minutes. Last time, it took seven hours and thirteen minutes of Space time to fill up, and subtracting this hour and twenty minutes left them with five hours and fifty-three minutes remaining.
Upon their return, as they entered the community and reached the building where they lived, they immediately noticed several people at the windows of the high-rise, all looking towards the central square of the community, where loud noises of arguing and fighting could be heard.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng decided against rashly going over and instead went upstairs to seek information from their people, since they weren’t around when the incident happened and didn’t know what had occurred.
Ascending the floors, Lu Ruisheng pulled out a walkie-talkie and inquired about the situation.
Cheng Yang was the first to respond, “Brother, two groups in our community have started fighting over the territory; they each want to control our community independently.”
Gu Pan, hearing the conversation over the walkie-talkie, asked, “Which side is currently prevailing?”
She remembered this war distinctly from her previous life; although Li Dong hadn’t reached out to her and she was unaware who the leaders of the two factions were, this deadly fight over the territory—which had cost more than a dozen lives—had left a deep impression, being the community’s first ever bloody conflict.
Cheng Yang continued, “I’m watching from the ninth floor, but my view is obstructed by buildings in front, so I can only see a corner. But you all mentioned not to watch such chaos, so we didn’t dare to go out.”
Lu Ruisheng replied, “It’s good you didn’t go out. Let’s just wait and listen for updates. We should stay out of this.”
Feng Zhekai added, “They are probably trying to settle matters today. Everyone’s carrying machetes, and given the weather, once injured, one will most likely not survive outside for half an hour.”
Chen Shaonan also mentioned, “Resources are getting scarcer, these kind of incidents will probably increase.”
Recalling the details from her previous life, Gu Pan thought the group established later had won and taken over the community. In the future, they would be the ones collecting protection money; however, these changes didn’t really affect her much since the protection fee still had to be paid, just to different people, and their daily scavenging for supplies continued. Thus, her memories about this weren’t significant.
But this life was different; the group established later was led by Li Dong. Li Dong hadn’t interacted with them in her former life, but now they knew him, and she could tell he was of a mean nature, warranting extra caution.
An hour later, the noise outside had diminished.
After another ten minutes, Feng Zhekai spoke over the walkie-talkie, “Someone from the third floor came to me, saying their son was injured and unconscious, carried back home, and assured me there were no strangers; they begged me to come and take a look. But since they were fighting, I think it’s best to discuss with everyone before deciding whether to go.”
Unlike the situation with the pregnant woman who gave birth earlier, this case might involve others.
Gu Pan said, “If you are sure there’s no one else in their home, we should go and take a look, and we might also gather some precise information.”
Since the third floor residents were directly involved, they had more detailed information, which could aid in Gu Pan and her group’s future defense.
Donning their gear, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng went downstairs with Feng Zhekai to the third floor.
Upon reaching, both apartments 301 and 302 had their doors open, with injured persons in each.
Feng Zhekai suggested, “Let’s gather everyone in one apartment; it’ll be warmer for the injured, which is beneficial.” After saying that, he entered 301.
Inside, he saw an injured man on the sofa, suffering from multiple knife and gunshot wounds. The bleeding had slowed, but his clothes were soaked in red, and he was unconscious.
Feng Zhekai checked the injuries, his brow tightly furrowed, remaining silent.
Meanwhile, the injured from 302 were also brought over, and after examining them, Feng Zhekai turned to the families and said, “Let’s step outside to talk.”
At this point, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng understood—he was implying there was no hope. And indeed, these individuals had not been carried back immediately after getting hurt; they had been left out in the cold too long, which made saving them nearly impossible.
Following Feng Zhekai outside, he informed the families, “They’ve been outside in the cold for too long. There might have been a chance in a hospital ICU, given the medical equipment, but under our current medical conditions, there’s really nothing I can do. You should go home and spend the last moments with your family members.”
The families wanted to argue for more help, but they stopped mid-sentence, realizing that without proper medication and equipment, even administering an IV was not feasible. Acknowledging the doctor’s helplessness, they thanked him and returned inside.
Feng Zhekai and others went back upstairs, avoiding discussing anything in the hallway; they returned home and only spoke again over the walkie-talkies.
Cheng Yang asked, “Did they provide any useful information?”
Feng Zhekai replied, “No hope. They were unconscious and had no chance to speak.”
Duan Shumei said, “Such a big incident in a small community, it’s bound to spread soon.”
“We’ll wait for more news; anyhow, we should keep ourselves uninvolved,” said Chen Shaonan over the walkie-talkie on Duan Shumei’s side.
After talking for a while and to save the battery, they eventually turned off the walkie-talkies.
By the evening, the news spread just as Gu Pan remembered— the group established later, led by Li Dong, had won.
Gu Pan, pulling Lu Ruisheng aside to sit down, mentioned, “In our previous life, we didn’t know Li Dong, but in this life, since we’ve refused to join him, he’ll certainly have plans.”
Lu Ruisheng expressed his concerns, “I’m worried as well, but they’ve just fought a tough battle with many casualties, so they’ll need time to regroup. From now on, we just need to keep an eye on their activities.”
“Before, I thought we could live quietly without competing or fighting, but now it seems that even if we don’t make a move, others might not necessarily leave us alone. So, how do we more accurately observe their movements?”
“Plant spies, or bribe insiders.”
“You are the professional; let’s just go straight for bribing.”
“Alright, I’ll go out and look around tonight.”
“Together. I have ‘Space,’ so I won’t hold you back.”
“My concern is the cold night; I didn’t want you to have to go out.”
“But I like being with you.”
Lu Ruisheng ruffled his wife’s hair, “Alright then, together.”
That night, they ventured out together and located Li Dong and his group’s gathering point in the northwestern corner of the community, in a six-story building which they occupied entirely. The original residents had been driven out and had moved into empty apartments elsewhere; with the rising number of deaths, there were many vacancies, making finding a place to stay not particularly difficult.
Arriving in front of the building, Gu Pan noted its strategically favorable location—easy to defend and hard to attack.

They observed for a while. There was only one on guard at the entrance, likely shifts were changing since occasionally groups of three to five would come out, no individuals. It appeared their vigilance was quite high.
Thus, they could only wait longer to catch someone when they were alone.
