Chapter 27 -27 Unknown Danger

They immediately began scavenging for supplies. Without any outsiders around, they simply placed items directly into “Space,” which saved a lot of trouble. This time, Gu Pan even put the shelves in the “Space” to make finding things less of a hassle in the future.

Then, the two went upstairs. At the cosmetics counter, Gu Pan grabbed some high-end makeup products, which would be valuable to the wealthy in the future. They also visited the second floor and took a lot of brand-name clothes, which could be exchanged for “gold” later on.

By the time they left, the sun had tilted westward, but they still needed to save time because more people would be out scavenging tomorrow, so today was “Gold” time.

Next, they headed to a larger shopping mall, which was farther from their home.

Upon reaching the entrance, they found the doors open. The pair thought about negotiating with others inside, just like at the first place—everyone could take what they needed without interfering with each other, since none of it belonged to any single person.

However, as soon as they walked in, a gun was aimed straight at Lu Ruisheng’s head in an attempt to take him hostage.

Lu Ruisheng’s quick reflexes allowed him to grab the attacker’s wrist, twist it back, and seize the gun, now pointing it at the attacker’s head.

At that moment, Gu Pan drew her own gun, chambered a round, and prepared for battle.

Soon, about a dozen gunmen gathered around them, all pointing their weapons at the duo.

Gu Pan knew that if they fought, they had a high chance of winning, but engaging in battle wasn’t the wise choice now. If a fight broke out, they risked getting injured, which wasn’t necessary.

So, Gu Pan raised her hands and said, “If we fight, both sides will likely get hurt, and at these temperatures, injury is a one-way ticket to death. So, it’s not a wise choice. Let us go, and we’ll do no harm to each other, how about that?”

The leader fell silent for a moment before saying, “Let them go.”

He acknowledged the reason in Gu Pan’s words. Seeing Lu Ruisheng’s move, he realized he was no ordinary man. A fight would certainly lead to injuries on his side. Since the opponents had offered to retreat, it allowed him a way out without being too pushy.

Lu Ruisheng didn’t release his captive and said to Gu Pan, “Go get the snowmobile.”

Gu Pan acknowledged and headed out of the steel gate of the mall. In an empty area, she took out the snowmobile, got on, and drove back to the entrance. She had learned to ride in her past life and was still proficient.

Seeing Gu Pan arrive, Lu Ruisheng pushed the hostage back towards his group, made a quick exit, and climbed onto the snowmobile. The two sped away like the wind.

Gu Pan didn’t stop for a while, then said, “I didn’t expect the first day to be so thrilling.”

Lu Ruisheng got off the bike, tapped on Gu Pan’s head, and remarked, “Is that what you call thrilling? That was dangerous.”

Gu Pan laughed and said, “Well, I’m carrying the memories of three years from my previous life. We killed twenty-six in those three years. This really wasn’t much.”

Lu Ruisheng hugged Gu Pan and sighed, “Why is it that you remember these unfortunate things instead of me?”

“At least my snowmobile riding skills aren’t bad, right?” she replied.

“Indeed, you ride very well, and you make a good point. At least having experienced this, you won’t be as scared anymore.”

“There’s a gain and there’s a loss. Let’s not dwell on this. What’s our next stop? Today’s ‘Gold’ time is precious.”

“Let’s head to the next one then.”

“Get on, let me get accustomed to riding the bike,” Gu Pan said.

Lu Ruisheng sat on the rear seat and said with a smile, “I really never thought I’d be sitting on the back of my wife’s snowmobile.”

“Hold on tight, I’m going to speed up,” said Gu Pan, and she started the snowmobile and zoomed off.

The inertia made Lu Ruisheng cling on tighter.

When they reached the next mall, people were already inside, and the “gold” counters had been plundered.

This was the last place in the city with a gold store, and now it was gone.

The gold issue was pretty much settled, so the next important task was to find weapons.

With the army’s withdrawal, they would take all the weapons, making the JC Bureau the best place to get weapons now.

They searched everything they could and although some were already taken by others, they still found more than a dozen pistols and plenty of bullets, much more powerful than the ones they had made themselves.

They also took riot shields, stun guns, and bulletproof vests—anything they could carry, since space wasn’t an issue.

Seeing that it was getting late and they already had enough supplies, they needed to let their friends hurry to gather some food.

So the two rode their motorcycle to Guo Gang’s house and shared the news about the unmonitored supermarket, urging him to hurry there.

Of course, they also cautioned him to not bring the items directly home to avoid drawing attention, but to find a way to hide them outside and slowly bring them in.

Afterward, they visited Tian Zhenzhen’s house and informed her as well.

Gu Pan didn’t go to Dong Mingyue’s because if Dong Mingyue knew, her mother-in-law would as well, and then the whole neighborhood would swarm the supermarket, which wasn’t fair to others. She only wanted to remind a few friends and didn’t wish to disrupt everyone else’s routine.

So after telling Tian Zhenzhen, the two headed home, grateful for the time saved by the snowmobile.

Passing the sixth floor on the way home, they knocked on a door.

Dr. Feng, Feng Zhekai, answered it.

Lu Ruisheng said, “Dr. Feng, can we have a word?”

Feng Zhekai invited them in to talk inside, where a charcoal brazier warmed the room.

Feng Zhekai’s wife came to greet them as well, a woman of great poise and presence.

After exchanging greetings, Lu Ruisheng told him about the available supplies at the supermarket, urging him to act quickly. He then took off his backpack and lent it to Feng Zhekai, suggesting he use it for convenience, mentioning that he’d been lucky enough to gather some supplies already, so he didn’t need to go back today.

Feng Zhekai asked Lu Ruisheng, “Is Teacher Chen going? If he is, I can join him for company.”

Lu Ruisheng replied, “He should be able to. I’ll tell him when I get back so he can come down and look for you.”

Feng Zhekai thanked Lu Ruisheng and Gu Pan, appreciative that they had thought of his family in all this.

Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng said goodbye and returned to their own floor, first stopping by Chen Shaonan’s to pass on the news and telling him to find Feng Zhekai later. Then, Gu Pan lent his own backpack to Chen Shaonan.

They reminded them both to not bring everything back at once—too risky for drawing unwanted attention. It was best to hide the items somewhere and retrieve them either when someone was on night watch or while taking out trash, bit by bit.

These two families were allies for Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng. A doctor was indispensable, and a physics and chemistry teacher could be very useful after the apocalypse. Plus, Chen Shaonan’s household wasn’t overbearingly moralistic, making them reliable allies.

Chen Shaonan thanked them and hurried back inside to prepare.

Not long after Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng were home, they heard Chen Shaonan leave.

Lu Ruisheng, halfway through undressing, remembered something, “Right, should I also tell that young guy in 901?”

Gu Pan, hearing this, remembered as well, “Go ahead. He calls you ‘bro’ and trusts you. It won’t hurt to let him know.”

Lu Ruisheng put his clothes back on and went upstairs to find the young man in 901. He wasn’t close with Chen Shaonan or Feng Zhekai, nor was he an ally, so the simple act of passing along the information was sufficient; what he did with it was his business.

The young man from 901 was extremely grateful after hearing the news from Lu Ruisheng. He promised that when the weather warmed up and his parents could come, they would properly thank both Lu Ruisheng and Gu Pan.

When Lu Ruisheng returned, Gu Pan had already changed into her fleece pajamas, preparing the food while the electric heater kept the place cozy.

They were having Sichuan cuisine tonight, which was perfect after a cold day out, something spicy to warm up with a good sweat.

Lu Ruisheng changed his clothes, washed his hands, and they both quietly ate dinner while watching TV, of course, watching dramas they had previously downloaded, playing on the television.
