Chapter 72 -72: On the Tip of the Heart

“Is he the one who holds a place in your heart?” Even though his question seemed uncertain, Simon Carrington’s tone suggested it was more of an affirmation.

“Are all lawyers as sharp as you?” Carolline Ruiz hesitated for a moment before indirectly admitting to Simon Carrington’s statement.

“A good lawyer must triumph over an adversary not only with skill but also with just a bit more insight and observation than the opponent. Carolline, he’s not bad. I’ll wait back in the room first.” Simon finished and turned to leave first.

Carolline watched Simon walk away, and for a moment, she didn’t know what to say. She knew whether Bryan Hawkins was good or not, but regardless, she had fallen in love with him. That fact couldn’t be changed.

Bryan didn’t take long before returning with an expensive-looking bottle of foreign wine in hand.

“Let’s go,” Bryan said, without holding Carolline’s hand, only asking her to lead the way.

“…Um, are you sure you want to go in?” Carolline worried about how to face everyone after going in, especially her grandfather and two aunts, who had sharp tongues. She feared Bryan wouldn’t be able to handle them.

“Of course, since we’ve met, it’s only natural to offer a toast.” Bryan smiled and nodded. Even if they hadn’t planned for it, now that they were at his hotel and he was the host, it was his duty to offer a toast, especially to esteemed guests like Carolline’s family and relatives.

“But…but.” Carolline wanted to remind him that he had talked about hiding their marriage earlier. What identity would he assume when offering the toast at this time? However, she couldn’t bring herself to say it.

She worried Bryan would think she wanted to renege on concealing their marriage.

“Silly girl, don’t worry. Trust me. Now, lead the way.” When Bryan left earlier, he had asked the duty manager if there was a reserved private room for a guest named Henry Ruiz. Once he got a positive response, he asked the manager to waive all charges for the Ruiz family before hurrying back to retrieve the bottle of wine from his private collection. In the rush, he forgot to ask which private room it was.

Otherwise, he would have headed directly to the private room.

“That person just now, his name is Simon Carrington.” Knowing there was no stopping him now, Carolline decided to let it be and inform Bryan about Simon. Previously, she mentioned that Simon had saved her. Bryan had also expressed his gratitude and intent to repay Simon for it if the opportunity arose.

“So that’s Simon Carrington! Your grandfather wants to play matchmaker for the two of you?” Bryan raised his eyebrows as he asked. He also had keen observation skills, or he wouldn’t have become such a thorn in George Morris’s side.

Including an outsider in the family feast and having them as grandpa’s guest meant that grandpa must have liked that man. Considering Simon had saved Carolline’s life, she would traditionally have to repay him by offering her body in marriage.

“…” Carolline was at a loss for words. How did Bryan know all this? She had already rejected Simon, “I’ve made it clear to him, but I don’t know why my grandpa…”

As she tried to explain, he cut her off, “Alright, let’s not overthink. Let’s go in and offer a toast to them. Come on.”

With that, Carolline knew there was no point in hesitating, and she led Bryan inside.

As the door was pushed open and the family turned their heads to look at Carolline, scepticism about her having anything to do with Simon had vanished after they saw the two leaving and returning together. No one believed it was nothing, except for Henry Ruiz and Emily Hill. Grandfather Ruiz, in particular, was delighted.

However, all were slightly taken aback as they saw Bryan Hawkins following Carolline inside.

Henry Ruiz and Emily Hill might not be aware of much about Bryan Hawkins or the Hawkins family, but Ryan and Blake Ruiz, who had both been fighting in the business world, knew this formidable foe quite well. They were even grateful that their chosen businesses were worlds apart from hotels; otherwise, they wouldn’t stand a chance against Bryan even with their experience.

Grandfather Ruiz also knew Bryan, but never expected to see him enter their private room at that particular moment. Logically, there should be no connection between the Ruiz and Hawkins families.

Also, Grandfather Ruiz was more concerned about young talents from the imperial capital rather than those from G City.

“Dad, that’s Bryan Hawkins, the one who saved Carolline before.” Emily Hill introduced him to Grandfather Ruiz.

They had initially said Simon was Carolline’s savior, but Bryan had rescued her when she was in college. If she had to promise herself to someone, there was a proper order.

Emily deliberately said this, not expecting Bryan to arrive. Now that both saviors were present, how could she express her gratitude?

Grandfather Ruiz certainly remembered Carolline’s bold act during her college years but hadn’t inquired further about who had helped her back then. He never thought it would turn out to be Bryan Hawkins.

“Grandpa Ruiz, what happened in the past is over now. Carolline and Doctor have been so caring towards my grandpa, and I was able to recover so quickly from my injury thanks to their care. I’ve been wanting to express my gratitude, so I came here now to offer a toast.” Bryan spoke confidently, pouring a glass for Grandfather Ruiz and drinking it first. Grandfather Ruiz didn’t want to refuse his gesture, especially since his other two sons might need help from others in the future.

After toasting Grandfather Ruiz, Bryan offered a toast to Henry Ruiz and Emily Hill, then Carolline’s second and third uncles and aunts and finally the younger generation of the Ruiz family.

Carolline thought Bryan had had enough to drink, but he hadn’t finished yet. He stepped in front of Simon and said, “Thank you.”

Others might not understand the significance of those two simple words, but Carolline blushed, and Simon knew that the ‘thank you’ was spoken on her behalf.

But why was this man allowed to express gratitude to him on Carolline’s behalf?

Simon didn’t quite understand, but in the end, he raised his glass, drank the wine, and accepted Bryan’s thanks.
