Chapter 84 -84 Dark City_1

“Clang clang…”

The train’s floor emitted a regular clanging sound as Colin checked his phone for the time—it was ten o’clock in the morning.

Almost six hours had passed since their last stop.

“It doesn’t seem like it’s going to stop anytime soon,” he mused.

Colin glanced out of the window and found no signs of slowing, having originally thought that the train would consistently stop every four to five hours.

But now it seemed more likely to be random…

Confined in the narrow train compartment, with no indication of the train reaching a station, Colin’s thoughts inevitably began to drift.

He was curious—who had created this train? Was it the work of a maker within the Bonfire Company, or did it hail from an extraterrestrial civilization?

What was its purpose? Was it just to travel through various places of extraordinary danger?

And what would happen to this train if he used “Time Stasis” right now?

Ideas flickered through his mind, and while Colin wasn’t necessarily eager for answers, he casually pondered them.

Behind him, that group of people was still relatively well-behaved, except for the student with the severed hand who occasionally let out pained groans.

Initially, when his hand was cut off, he didn’t feel much, but as time passed, the pain began to emanate from the severed area.

To Colin’s surprise, aside from the occasional cursing to vent, the guy didn’t complain too much.

‘It’s a pity the monster snatched away that hand, otherwise, I might have had him try the “Gluttony Mark” to see if it could reattach the limb directly…’

Colin’s proficiency with the arsenal of items he carried wasn’t very high, and given the chance, he definitely intended to experiment more to understand their potentials.

But for now, with the hand gone and the bleeding stopped—he was no employee of his—Colin had no further desire to help.

Shaking his head, he gathered his thoughts, leaned back in his seat, closed his eyes, and entered a state of dozing.

Time passed, how much, he didn’t know…

With his eyes closed, Colin sharply sensed that the intervals between the train’s “clangs” had slightly lengthened, suggesting that the train was decelerating.

“Are we stopping again?” he wondered.

Colin opened his eyes, straightened up, and listened closely to confirm that the train was indeed slowing down.

By now, his phone showed it was eleven fifty-three.

Then, Colin heard footsteps approaching. He turned his head to see “Brother Xiao” walking up with unease from the group behind him.

Tang Xiao looked nervously at the person holding a cleaver and wearing a nine-tube mask—if he wasn’t mistaken, this entity had also appeared mysteriously and was likely not human.

“What’s the matter?”

Feeling Colin’s gaze, Tang Xiao shivered and then, suppressing his anxiety, asked, “Can we get off this time?”

He had roughly surmised that this fellow, who seemed about his own age, might be a special member tasked with handling supernatural affairs.

The only way to stay alive now was to rely on him.

After the recent events, he no longer dared to be as recklessly hopeful as before, making his own decisions.

“Not sure. Let’s see when we get there. Go back to your seat for now,” Colin replied, shaking his head without providing immediate advice, not certain of the safety of their next stop.

Once he had sent the man back to his seat, some time passed, and the train emitted its whistle, signaling that they were about to arrive at the station.

The fog outside the windows rapidly dissipated…

This time, the train seemed to have arrived on a highway, with rows of bright incandescent street lights on both sides.

As the white fog dissipated, the silhouette of a city with skyscrapers quickly came into view before everyone’s eyes.

Seeing the modern cityscape outside the train window, the excitement was palpable among the people in the rear—they were in a proper city now, so surely nothing could happen, right?

However, before they could relish their joy, Colin doused them with cold water.

“Don’t get off the train.”

After a pause, Colin added uneasily in his heart, “Check the time on your phones, then look carefully outside the window.”

At his words, everyone paused in confusion, took out their phones to glance at the time, and looked again at the dark city outside the window. A strong sense of unease suddenly surged in their hearts.

At this very moment…

It was noon, twelve eight minutes and fifty-seven seconds.

Night continued to dominate the earth, the dim and faint starlight barely managing to outline the protruding cityscape, making the once towering skyscrapers appear like silent and helpless giants crouching in the darkness.

Colin sat inside the train, peering through the window at the deserted Dark City, feeling his scalp tingle and his body gradually enveloped by an indescribable sense of suffocation.

“What the hell kind of place is this? The ‘Beastification’ energy inside me has actually been scared into shrinking!”

Colin was extremely terrified as he felt the “Beastification” energy within him shrinking rapidly, conveying a sense of extreme panic and tremor.

This had never happened before!

Even directly facing that thing that resembled a Buddha statue with eighteen arms, called “Hunger,” hadn’t triggered this reaction.

But now, without having encountered anything, Colin couldn’t help but tremble all over…

This was enough to indicate that the horror present in this accursed place far exceeded everything he had encountered in World Code 13!

As his feelings of panic intensified, Colin’s thoughts rusted to a halt, and he vaguely sensed something invisible and viscous sliding across his skin. His limbs felt like they were mired in a swamp, unable to move, and a suffocating sense of despair slowly seeped into his body through his pores.

His entire body couldn’t stop shaking, he couldn’t breathe, felt as if his neck was stuck in a vise.

But just then…

A contradictory sensation of warmth and heat emerged from the pocket on the side of his windbreaker.

When it appeared, the fear inside him was quickly soothed.

“Contrarian?”

Colin broke free from the fear, not caring about the chills brought on by the cold sweat, he pulled out the object that had brought warmth to him and found it was the orange revolver which had so far been lackluster.

For some unknown reason, it was now heating up, its warmth spreading like wildfire, rapidly coursing through his body. As it brought an unusual sense of comfort, it completely burned away the obscure and nearly tangible fear.

“Now this is showing some ‘orange-grade’ performance.”

Colin took a deep breath, holding onto the revolver, raised his right hand and wiped off the sweat on his neck with his sleeve, feeling much better.

At this moment, he suddenly thought of something, turned his head to look behind him, and realized that although the others looked scared, their reactions were still within the normal range.

“This makes no sense; I was scared half to death, nearly losing my mind, and they are not affected at all?”

Colin pondered for a moment, then quickly guessed that this thing seemed to target those with certain extraordinary abilities.

But then again, what place is this city?

Colin always felt that the silhouette of this city looked familiar, as though he had seen it somewhere before, but couldn’t remember specifically at the moment.

Just then, the train, which had been running for nearly eight hours, came to a stop.

However, this time, the train doors only symbolically opened for a moment. Before the doors could stay open for more than a second, they closed with a snap, and the train started up again.
