Chapter 45 -45 Acquaintance_1
Outside Black Stone City, at an inconspicuous dungeon entrance, Warden Calder was preparing with his subordinates to transfer a group of prisoners sentenced to the death penalty into a prison carriage to be sent to the Holy Healing Church within the city.

“The actions of the Holy Healing Church seem to be getting crazier and crazier,” he muttered to himself. “They’ve started to lay hands on the living…”
With a belly like an eight-month pregnant beer gut and a body grown plump, Warden Calder couldn’t help but shake his head.
At this point, the tall and thin young man beside him spoke, “The cases of the death penalty issued by the Tribunal of Judgment are increasing. Even if one says the wrong thing, they could be sentenced to the death penalty…
“However, these people are not executed immediately, instead, they are sent to the Holy Healing Church.”
“I always feel like the Judges might have reached some indescribable agreement with the people of the Holy Healing Church…”
But before he could finish, Warden Calder hastily raised his hand to interrupt:
“Stop! Don’t specify who you are talking about, and if you must, please get farther away from me to avoid getting any blood on me when heads begin to roll…”
After that, he turned and glanced behind him, at the dozen or so iron cages, where figures were chained by their hands and feet and locked inside the cells.
Normally, these people would not be locked additionally inside the prison carriage…
But ever since the incident a few nights ago, everything had become much stricter. Even when caged, shackles must be fitted on both hands and feet to prevent accidents.
If the same thing happened again, he would most likely be packed up and sent to be experimented on by those lunatics at the Holy Healing Church as well.
However, to be truthful, he was against experimenting on these condemned prisoners.
But that was the Holy Healing Church after all, who had an overwhelming influence and were the real power behind the Southern Border. Even the City Lord had to listen to them; what could his opposition possibly achieve?
He sighed, withdrew his gaze, and couldn’t shake the feeling that something was brewing within Black Stone City. Unable to put his finger on it, he only knew that things seemed to be getting increasingly awry.
However, at that moment, suddenly a white crow flew from afar and alighted on his shoulder.
Warden Calder hesitated before grabbing the crow, removing a rolled piece of paper from its leg, letting it fly away, and then unrolling the paper to see that it had no writing on it.
Such a method of passing messages was likely a secret communication from the Virtue Knight Order.
After a moment’s thought, he crumpled the paper into a ball, put it in his mouth to chew a couple of times and swallowed it.
A revelation began to form vaguely in his mind.
When it had unfolded, Warden Calder reopened his eyes, turned around, and said to his subordinates: “Guys, take these people back to the dungeon, we will send them to the Holy Healing Church tomorrow. We have another task now.”
Having said that, the troop began to return.
“What task?”
“We are to halt all activities at hand and head west to greet a group of nobles who have escaped from the great disaster in the Pale Mountain Range.”
…
“These guys… haven’t I already said I would not accept them? Why are they still following?”
Looking back, Colin saw the noble convoy he had explicitly refused was following again at no great distance, occasionally casting glances his way.
However, it seemed that the previous misunderstanding had been cleared up, and the once intense wariness had diminished significantly.
And the group just followed without approaching, keeping a distance between them the whole time.
But as they walked, Colin suddenly realized something was amiss—
The place he was now heading to, according to the employee’s description, was a town. And for that group of people who had just undergone an attack, there likely weren’t many places left for them to choose…
At least his experiences these past few days had told him that there were few human cities in this damned place.
At that moment, he abruptly realized that the destination they were both heading for was probably the same place.
“Hiss… Did I just get freeloader on? Damn, I was too hasty, there goes a pound of gold!”
Colin couldn’t help but feel both amused and annoyed at himself, but asking about it now would be too embarrassing.
However, at that time, the footsteps behind him quickened, and they were suddenly not far behind him.
“Sir, it’s going to be dark soon. We had better speed up and reach the vicinity of Black Stone City as soon as possible; otherwise, even you will be in danger once night falls,” the old butler came over and reminded him.
Is it almost night? Colin looked up at the sky, where the dim light filtered through thick clouds, showing no sign of darkness approaching.
Although he didn’t know how these people were able to tell the time, this time, he did not refuse the invitation.
Because the night here was indeed dangerous…
On the way, looking at Colin in his beggar-like attire, the old butler couldn’t help but ask, “Sir, did you also escape from the Catastrophe of the Magic Fog that erupted from the Pale Mountain Range?”
What the hell were the Pale Mountain Range and the Catastrophe of the Magic Fog? But the Catastrophe of the Magic Fog sounded vaguely familiar, like he had heard of it before? Colin’s thoughts raced, and out of curiosity, he said, “So, those things were the Catastrophe of the Magic Fog…”
“You don’t know?” Helena’s surprised voice came from beneath her hood.
“In the heat of the moment, I only focused on escaping; I didn’t notice what happened over there?”
Curiously, Colin began to draw out more information, and after Helena was silent for a few seconds, she first mentioned that she was not too clear herself, and then she explained some of the things she knew.
A disaster had struck the Pale Mountain Range, the ground cracked open, and the sealed Magic Fog surged out, turning into countless monsters, which then devoured several small kingdoms one after another.
Even they were only able to escape by chance because they were on the periphery.
Still, even so, from the tens of thousands of people who fled their city, only about a dozen remained now; they had no idea whether the rest were dead or alive.
“Yes, yes, it was a terrible disaster, I almost perished as well,” Colin agreed, though in his mind he recalled that during his last mission, the Human Patchwork Monster controlling the Red-Robed Bishop had mentioned these events when introducing the world.
He had assumed it was just a background story made up for deception but turned out it was real…
He glanced again at the noblewoman refugee beside him.
Colin suddenly felt that, setting aside other aspects, the Human Patchwork Monster didn’t seem to tell many lies, if any.
“But then again, that guy knew about Earth-related knowledge years ago, and over a thousand people must have unlocked firearm technology by now, but these people seem to have no understanding of firearms at all?”
Colin remembered how these people had seemed extremely shocked and curious when they saw him draw a gun, and in their conversation, they even said they had never heard of such a thing before.
Had that guy not spread the corresponding knowledge yet?
Or did he underestimate the power of firearms and explosives?
But before he could ponder any further, Colin suddenly stopped in his tracks, sniffing the air and looking ahead with a wary half-closed eye.
“Someone’s coming!”
“Stay alert! Stay alert!”
On hearing this, the old butler instantly drew out his Cross Sword, and the soldiers looked ahead with wary eyes.
However, when they clearly saw the figure emerging ahead, Colin’s expression revealed a trace of bemusement; unexpectedly, it seemed he had run into someone he knew.
