Chapter 157: He knew she had secrets

’She will forget everything right?’

’That’s what electroshocks do...’

Before those words could make sense, an electric shock ripped through Ella’s body, brutal and blinding.

Her body convulsed. Limbs jerked against unseen restraints. Searing pain ripped through her skull as her body arched and teeth clenched.

She tried to scream but nothing came out.

Again.

And again.

It kept hitting again. Harder.

Suddenly, Ella felt a ripping pain on her lips. Her eyes snapped open.

Drenched in cold sweat, Ella laid on the bed, panting heavily.

The moment she opened her eyes, her eyes met a pair of onyx eyes and the sharp pain on her lips intensified for a moment before it dispersed.

Adrian released her lips.

"I..."

Before she could muster any words, she was yanked into a strong embrace.

Adrian hugged her so tightly that she was suffocated.

But oddly enough, it comforted something in her. She could not bring herself to push him away. She did not want to.

The chaotic visions from before swirled in her mind.

In this instant, the nightmares did not bother her. But rather, it was the realization that this time, her nightmare was not a memory of her past life.

Ella couldn’t remember accurately what all she saw but whatever fragments she could recall told her that this was not a memory from her past life.

Yet, it felt so real.

While Ella’s raced through the countless possibilities, the man who held her suddenly opened his mouth—

"What are you hiding?"

Ella’s breath caught. Her world tilted the instant she processed those words.

He knew it.

...

"What are you zoning out for?"

Ella’s chin slipped from her palm and nearly hit the desk. She glared at Kade.

"You have been zoning out for the entire day," Kade shrugged his shoulders.

Ella pinched the spot between her brows.

At this moment, a cluster of pages appeared in front of her.

When she looked up, Ruby stood by her seat, "Here is your script. I got one for me too," she extended the scripts in her hand.

The Imperial God and the Imperial Goddess clustered together at one spot attracted the attention of the entire class.

The only eyesore there was Ella who received critiquing gazes.

Ella tugged at her oversized hoodie and pulled the hood up to cover her head.

’’Thank you... Have you gone through it yet?" Ella flipped the pages.

Ruby nodded, "It’s a beautiful drama. If you get in here—"

"Who is getting in the drama?" Kade sharply cut Ruby off, looking at her in disbelief, "Ella?"

Ella gave him a rotten look, "You, don’t underestimate this talented lady here."

’’Underestimate? Nah, you can act well."

Ella blinked. Hmm, she did not expect a compliment from this guy, let alone one on her acting skills.

Ruby also tilted her head.

’’You really think so?"

Kade nodded, "You play the perfect white lotus in front of my..." He shut up when he noticed that the entire class was staring at them with sharpened ears.

"_"

How could Ella not get the cue?

Kade was picked up by the driver sent by the main mansion.

Ella walked Ruby off to the gates and convinced her to get started with the script.

’’I will also try to remember the dialogues quickly. Then, we can take some time out so you can help me with the expressions."

Ruby suddenly turned to Ella, "Is everything fine?"

"Hmm?"

’’You have been zoning out the entire day."

Ella was about to shake her head but at the last moment, she opened her mouth, "Ruby, do you believe in past lives?"

In the face of Ella’s question, Ruby fell silent, "Past lives?"

After a brief pause, she sighed, "I have never thought about it."

Ella lowered her gaze.

"But I feel like nothing is impossible in this world,’’ Ruby shook her head, "In my life, there have been many situations where I almost gave up hope and lost my faith. But those situations fixed themselves like a miracle..."

Met with Ella’s questioning gaze, Ruby spoke, "My dad passed away when I was young and we were on the verge of bankruptcy. I was afraid of what life would be for me and my mother because she was a pampered lady before her parents’ death and I was just a child. I thought we would not survive a day in the outside world... but we are still alive."

"And..."

Ella glanced at her intently when Ruby hesitated, "And...?"

Ruby sighed, "After our fallout back then, I thought you would approach me and say that you did not mean those words. But eventually, I realized that maybe you would loathe me for the rest of your life..."

Before she could finish her words, Ella wrapped her in a tight hug.

A pang of pain shot in Ella’s chest when she heard those words. Because she had spent an entire life loathing Ruby.

Even till the point Ruby died, Ella avoided the discomfort in her chest. She forced herself to not cry no matter how devastated she felt.

Ruby was slightly taken aback at first but then she patted Ella’s back, "However, things turned around against my expectations."

When Ruby saw Ella for the first time in the university hallway, she had felt an irresistible urge to rush towards her. The grudge from years ago seemed like a distant past.

Yet, a part of her was afraid of being shunned. So, she tried to avoid her.

Imagine her surprise when Ella approached her so enthusiastically? At first, Ruby thought Ella just wanted to watch her make a fool of herself again. So, she did not let her guards down.

But over time, Ruby realized that this was not a facade.

Especially after the kidnapping incident, Ruby realized that Ella was being sincere to her. But since she hadn’t dared to think if they could make it out alive, she kept her thoughts to herself.

"I believe in miracles so I would believe in things like past lives too," Ruby pulled back but when she looked at Ella’s reddened eyes, she was stunned, "What happened...?"

"Young Miss."

Ella and Ruby, both turned in the direction of the voice.
