Chapter 60: Chapter 60: Most monsters are better not to be looking at

The forest was silent, eerie but calm—no signs of any monsters yet. Only the distant sound of leaves rustling overhead.

"What kind of monsters do you want to tame, Axel?" Owen asked as he bounced on top of Axelius’s head.

Axelius grinned, his hands behind his head. "Depends on what my core can handle... but it should be something strong. Like, really strong." He clenched a tiny fist with excitement, already imagining a powerful, terrifying beast obeying his every word.

Liselotte suddenly whispered, "Oh my gosh, keep quiet, guys! Look!"

Axelius blinked and turned his head. Adelheida was already squatting down beside a bush, motioning him over.

"Look at that, Axelius," she whispered excitedly, pointing through the trees. "This is amazing. It’s rare for them to come out in groups like that."

Axelius crouched and followed her finger.A soft shimmer floated in the fog—tiny black-winged creatures, glowing faintly, their wings fluttering silently as they trailed violet mist.

"Whoa... are those the Nebelwings?" Owen gasped, his eyes wide.

Axelius was frozen in awe. There were at least ten of them, gliding gently through the air, almost like floating lights with wings. They looped in the mist, their glow pulsing faintly as they drifted closer.

The two girls, Liselotte and Adelheida, pressed their hands to their mouths, barely containing their excitement. Their eyes sparkled as they held their breath in quiet amazement.

"They’re coming this way," Wilmar warned, gripping his weapon cautiously.

Seraphina, always alert, narrowed her eyes and threw her sword into the ground, her stance ready. Liselotte held up her hand, "Relax, Sera—they’re harmless, remember?" frёeωebɳovel.com

"I know that," Seraphina said, her tone low. "But Nebelwings never approach humans this close. If they’re flying straight to us... something’s not right. Don’t let your guard down."

Everyone held still as the black small the size of a kid fists creatures drifted silently closer... and then began to circle them.

"Waaah, what is this?! I need to write this down!" Liselotte squealed quietly, pulling out a second notebook and scribbling frantically. "Their behavior is completely different from what’s recorded!"

"They’re letting us touch them..." Theo said, reaching out gently and poking one of them with a gloved finger. It didn’t even flinch.

"I think you attracted them, Axel," Owen muttered suspiciously, eyes narrowed.

Axelius frowned and looked around at the curious creatures flying around them. "Me? Why?"

Owen crossed his arms. "Your core is for monsters, right? You really need to figure out what kind of core that is... Let’s hope this guys won’t suspect a thing."

Adelheida slowly reached for Axelius’s hand and lifted it. "Shh... Don’t be scared, Axelius. This is a rare opportunity," she whispered softly.

The moment she held his hand out... all the Nebelwings suddenly turned.

Fwip—In a flash, every single one of them fluttered toward Axelius.

"Whoa!" he yelped as they swarmed him—settling on his shoulders, his head, his arms. One perched on his nose.

"They really are all over him..." Theo said, stunned.

Adelheida gently let go and stepped back. "It’s like they’ve chosen him."

Owen blinked, jaw open. "...Okay, that’s creepy and adorable at the same time, Wait that’s fur? They look like a variants of bees."

Axelius just stood there frozen, eyes wide, a Nebelwing sitting calmly in his hair.

For almost two minutes, they stood there, admiring the gentle glow and flutter of the Nebelwings around Axelius. It was quiet, peaceful... strangely magical.

But eventually, Seraphina crossed her arms. "Alright, enough. Shoo," she said, waving her hand.

As if understanding her words, the Nebelwings fluttered off gracefully into the fog, disappearing one by one into the violet mist.

"Let’s continue," Seraphina added, picking up her sword. "We should be leaving before sundown."

The group started moving again, boots crunching over dry leaves. But Adelheida and Liselotte looked like they were about to burst.

"Some are still following us!" Liselotte whispered loudly, peeking over her shoulder with wide eyes.

Adelheida leaned toward her and almost squealed, "I wanna scream! They’re so cute!"

"Don’t draw attention," Wilmar said calmly. "Eyes forward. We’re here to train, not adopt."

Axelius walked between them, grinning wide. "Hehehee... those guys are too weak for me anyway. I’m gonna find some strong, handsome monsters!"

Owen pumped his little fists in the air from Axelius’s head. "Hell yeah! Farenhald monsters! We are here! Come out now and bow to your master!"

They all chuckled at Owen’s shout as they looked around the mysterious forest. Even though they were inside the fog, the sun still lit their path. But not far ahead... the forest turned unnaturally dark. The trees thickened, light barely able to pass through the canopy.

Axelius tilted his head. "That part looks... weird."

Suddenly, Owen tugged his hair hard. "Whoa, whoa—Axel, stop! Look! I think there’s a monster over there."

Axelius followed his gaze. In the darkness, just beyond the edge of the light, was a figure perched on a fallen tree.

The others noticed Axelius had stopped and turned to see what he was staring at.

Axelius squinted, his eyes narrowing. He reached out with his thoughts. Hey birdie birdie... come here..."

The clouds shifted slightly, allowing a thin beam of sunlight to shine through the trees. And they saw it.

"AaaAAAHHHH!" Owen and Axelius screamed in unison.

Perched on the broken log was a human-sized owl with deer body and long, curved deer horns, wide black wings, and piercing golden eyes. Its feathers were patchy, and in one of its talons, it gripped a human arm—half-eaten.

Its head slowly, slowly turned all the way toward Axelius... Wilmar didn’t hesitate. He raised his bow and released.

Thwip! The arrow shot into the dark—and hit. A sickening thud followed, and the forest went quiet.

"W-WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!" Owen yelled, holding his head.

Adelheida and Liselotte burst into laughter at Axelius’s pale face.

"Creepy, right?!" Liselotte giggled. "Don’t pee your pants, okay?"

"That is—" she began to explain.

"—A Schattler, right?" Theo asked, stepping over and helping Axelius up. "They’re forest-dwelling night predators. Not common, but dangerous. Some unlucky hunter became food tsk tsk,"

"They’re disgusting," Liselotte added cheerfully. "Owl body sometimes human-like, deer antlers, and eats anything with a heartbeat."

Axelius stood up slowly. "Monsters look that scary?! But wyverns and goblins are not that s—"

The group laughed again. Seraphina stepped forward, her face calm but serious. "Most monsters are better not to be looking at, Axelius. Especially in Farenhald."

’Just what the heck?! That is scarier than zombies!’ He just thought,
