Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Seraphina Friends
The atmosphere inside the carriage stayed awkward for a moment as everyone stared at the small boy who had just been discovered hiding in the luggage space. Axelius stretched a little and rubbed his eyes with the back of his hand, then blinked innocently at the others as if he had just woken up from the softest nap in the world.
He looked up at Seraphina and tilted his head slightly, putting on a gentle, wide-eyed smile.
"Big sis~" he said sweetly, dragging out the word in the cutest way he could manage. "I just wanted to spend more time with you... you’ve been so busy lately..."
Seraphina raised one eyebrow, unimpressed. Confused in Axelius behavior. She crossed her arms and tapped her finger on her elbow, Owen slap his face. "Oh no"
"Acting cute won’t work, Axelius," she said flatly. "You’re not supposed to be here. This is a training trip. You’re going back."
But Axelius didn’t give up so easily.
He turned toward the other two girls sitting nearby, flashing them his best smile, the kind with a slight tilt of the head and the glimmer of pretend innocence in his eyes. Then, without warning, he gave a tiny sneeze—"choo!"—followed by a sniffle and a small pout.
As if on cue, both girls melted instantly.
"Awwww..." the girl who had screamed earlier clasped her hands together. "He’s so cute!"
"He’s like a lost puppy," the other girl said with a soft giggle, already reaching to pat his hair. "Can’t we let him come along just this once?"
Seraphina stared at the two girls with a blank face. "...Are you serious?"
The first girl nodded eagerly. "He’s already here anyway! And he’s so small, he won’t even take up space!"
The other one chimed in, "He can even carry things! Like a mascot!"
Seraphina sighed, her fingers pinching the bridge of her nose as if she was trying to prevent a headache from coming on. She glanced at Axelius again. "Did you at least leave a letter? Or tell anyone?"
Axelius paused for just a second, then slowly turned his head toward the carriage roof where Owen was hiding.
Right on cue, Owen bounced down next to him with perfect timing, holding one of his tiny slime arms up like a thumb. "All good!" he whispered with a proud grin. "I left the note! Even sealed it with that fancy leaf wax thing you found!"
Axelius gave a single nod to Seraphina. "Yup. Letter’s at home."
She stared at him for a long second, then finally threw her arms up in surrender and leaned back in her seat.
"Fine. You can stay. But you do exactly what I say."
Axelius beamed and gave her a peace sign. "Yes, captain~!"
The carriage rocked gently as it rolled along the road, warm sunlight slipping in through the curtains. Everything was calm for a moment—until one of the girls suddenly stood up with a big grin on her face.
She reached down and grabbed Axelius under his arms, easily lifting him up like a doll. "Didn’t know Axelius is this cute?! Look—he’s so small!"
Before he could say anything, she pulled him into a tight hug. His face was suddenly buried deep into the soft cushion of her chest. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
"Mmgh—!!" Axelius let out a muffled sound.
"Alright, that’s enough," Seraphina said, raising an eyebrow. "Sit down already."
But the girl just giggled and waved her hand. "He’ll be sitting with me!"
Still holding him, she plopped back into her seat and gently placed Axelius on her lap like he was her personal teddy bear. Axelius looked like he wanted to frown, but he quickly forced a smile instead. His face twitched.
Owen, still peeking from the top of the carriage, shook as he tried to hold in his laughter. "Pfft... now you’re a doll too?"
Meanwhile, the other girl leaned forward, smiling sweetly and reaching into her pocket. "Hey, Axelius," she said, holding out a round candy. "Do you like sweets?"
Axelius slowly reached for the candy and nodded once.
She chuckled and lightly poked his cheek. "You’re so quiet. You can talk to us, you know~ We’re not scary."
As the carriage kept moving, the girl looked at Seraphina and tilted her head. "Hey, Sera, how old is Axelius again?"
Seraphina didn’t look up from the map she was studying. "He’s seven."
"Seven?!" both girls gasped at the same time.
Even one of the boys spoke up. "There’s no way. He’s too small for a seven-year-old. He looks... kind of malnourished."
Seraphina just shrugged. "I don’t know. He’s a picky eater. He doesn’t even eat that much."
"Awwww..." the girls said in unison, now giving Axelius extra pats on the head.
The one who was hugging him frowned slightly as she looked out the window. "Huh? Where are we?"
Everyone turned to look outside. A row of simple stone houses was coming into view, with wooden fences and smoke rising from some chimneys.
"What are you talking about?" said the girl with the book. "That’s the town of Virewyn. After this, we’ll enter Farenwald Forest. That’s where our real training starts."
Axelius was still quiet in the girl’s lap, munching slowly on the candy.
Seraphina finally looked over at the others and said, "Oh, and... he lost his memories."
The carriage fell into silence.
After Seraphina mentioned Axelius had lost his memories, the air inside the carriage grew quiet for a moment. The four other nobles looked at the boy sitting quietly on one of their laps, his head slightly tilted as he sucked on the candy.
The girl holding him gave him a gentle squeeze and spoke first with a smile.
"Well, if you don’t remember anything, then let’s help you get to know us! I’m Adelheida von Grünstein. My family manages the jade mines in the north. And I’ve decided you’re mine now—so behave, little doll." She giggled and patted his hair gently.
Axelius blinked up at her, unsure if she was serious.
The girl next to her leaned forward with a bright smile. "And I’m Liselotte Edelhardt, the daughter of Count Edelhardt from the Silver Marches. I like books and rare monsters." She gave him a small wink. "Nice to meet you again, Axelius~"
Axelius gave a tiny bow of his head. "Nice... to meet you."
The two boys sitting across from them exchanged glances before one of them cleared his throat and straightened up.
"I am Wilmar von Dürwald, heir to House Dürwald of Knights. My father trains knights. I specialize in swordsmanship and tactics."
He gave a short nod but didn’t smile much. He was more serious than the others.
The last one leaned lazily against the carriage wall and gave a small smirk. "And I’m Theobald Krieger von Eisenbach. You can call me Theo. My family’s known for making weapons and armor for the royal knights. So I’m the only one not a noble here hehehe"
Axelius nodded again, giving a small polite smile.
Adelheida hugged him tighter. "So adorable... I wish I had a little brother like this."
"I’ll trade you my older brother," Liselotte said, sticking out her tongue.
Seraphina rolled her eyes. "Enough. Sit properly. We’ll arrive at the forest after Virewyn. And remember, this is a hunt. Don’t let your guard down."
