Chapter 57 - 57: The Night School

The stars blinked quietly over the village. Soft wind moved through the trees, carrying the scent of smoke and fresh soil. Everyone had gone to sleep hours ago.

Everyone except Caelen.

He sat alone outside the town hall, arms resting on his knees, staring into the sky. The faint hum of night bugs surrounded him.

He couldn't sleep.

Too many thoughts ran through his head.

"School," he whispered.

The word felt strange in this world. No one even knew what it meant. But after Zira interviewed the goblins earlier, it was clear—most of them couldn't read or write. Even she barely understood what a school was.

He stood up slowly.

"I'll just make it now," he muttered. "Why wait?"

Quietly, he made his way to the open field on the edge of the village. It was empty, unused, perfect.

With a wave of his hand, he summoned his system.

"Creation. Transmute."

Stone pulled itself from the earth, shaped and hardened into bricks. He raised his hands again.

"Create: Builder Golems. Small, thin. Ten."

[Creation successful: 10 Mini Golems (Builder-type)]

Ten knee-high golems emerged, shaped like blocky little workers. They looked up at him with glowing eyes.

"No noise," Caelen said quietly. "Everyone's asleep."

The golems nodded silently and began stacking bricks.

But Caelen paused again.

He had bricks. He had help. What exactly should the school look like?

"Search image: School buildings."

Six images appeared in front of him—some tall, some wide, some wooden, others stone. He studied them one by one.

"That one."

A small two-story stone school with a flat roof and a stone path leading to the front.

He didn't copy it exactly. Just used it as a guide.

"Let's build," he whispered.

The mini golems moved fast. Bricks were placed carefully, each one fused with Transmute. Caelen made sure the walls were smooth, the windows evenly spaced. A small staircase led to the second floor.

Each room had space for tables, chairs, and a board. He shaped the floors from clean-cut stone and created a path leading from the school to the rest of the village.

Then he searched: How to make chalkboard

Result: Slate, or smooth black-painted wood.

He searched again: How to make chalk

Result: Limestone powder and clay mix, shaped and dried.

He smiled.

"Simple."

He transmuted a slate panel, added a frame, and nailed it to the wall. He crafted two chalkboards, one for each floor. Then, he made ten wooden tables and twenty chairs. It wasn't fancy, but it looked real. Comfortable.

Next, he installed the windows using sand-smoothed stone. No glass yet. Just open air with wooden shutters.

He stood in the hallway and looked around.

"It's good," he whispered. "Better than I thought."

The golems worked without complaint. No noise. No light. Just soft footsteps in the dark.

By the time the sun started rising, it was done.

A two-story stone building with paths, doors, stairs, and everything in place.

He made a small sign out front and carved one word into it.

SCHOOL

He stood there, arms crossed, proud.

The birds began chirping. The sky turned orange. Slowly, doors opened around the village.

A few goblins stepped out. One rubbed his eyes. Another stretched and looked around.

"Hey..." one said, pointing. "That wasn't there yesterday."

Zira stepped outside next. She froze in place.

Then Garin walked out, yawning.

"What in the world...?"

The dwarves came last. Borin dropped the hammer he was holding. Dorgrim squinted at the building. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

Everyone gathered slowly in front of the school.

Caelen stepped out from the doorway, covered in dust, smiling like a child who just showed off a drawing.

Zira marched over, crossing her arms.

"You didn't sleep, did you?"

"Nope."

"You built this—last night?"

"With help," he said, pointing at the mini golems behind him.

One waved at her.

Borin blinked. "Two stories... solid brick... even has chalkboards..."

Dorgrim tapped the wall.

"This is no joke. It's sturdy. Real structure. Like a fortress."

Caelen walked forward and turned to the group.

"This is a school," he said.

The goblins blinked. Most of them didn't understand.

"It's a place to learn. To read. To write. To think."

Zira narrowed her eyes.

"You think we need this?"

"I know we do," Caelen replied. "You said it yourself—not everyone knows how to read or write."

She looked down, then nodded once.

He continued.

"If we want to grow stronger, smarter, more connected—this is the way."

A silence fell over the crowd.

Then, a small goblin boy stepped forward.

"...Can we go inside?" he asked.

Caelen smiled and opened the door.

The children ran inside first, followed by a few adults. They looked at the chalkboards, the tables, the stairs.

"It smells like stone," one said.

"It smells like something new," another whispered.

Caelen watched them.

Zira stood beside him.

"You really believe in this?" she asked.

"I believe in them," he replied.

She looked at the school again, then chuckled softly.

"Alright, professor. What's next?"

He laughed, brushing dirt from his arm.

"Let's just start with the alphabet."
