Reborn as Mr.CEO's Fat Wife-Chapter 820 Uncle, Are You Dad?
Chapter 820: Chapter 820 Uncle, Are You Dad?
Catherine Ford mechanically turned her head to look at Benjamin Jones, her mouth slightly ajar, swallowing unconsciously, followed by her heart pounding uncontrollably like a drumstick, her whole body’s scalp tingling, momentarily unsure whether she was insane or the man beside her was.
Nancy Newman and Kyle Carter’s expressions weren’t any better; in their eyes, Catherine Ford was a second-hand woman with no family background or education, promiscuous, dragging along a child, and divorced – being with a man in his fifties would already be considered lucky, yet the man in front of them clearly had an extraordinary background.
How could this be possible?
Nancy’s eyes turned red with jealousy, "Impossible, if you really liked her, how could you let her wear such LOW-quality clothes and shoes, aren’t you embarrassed by the depreciation?"
Upon hearing this, Benjamin Jones looked towards Catherine Ford.
Catherine suddenly tensed up, shifting awkwardly to the side. Although she was scrutinized by Nancy and looked miserable, she was not panicked, but now she felt uneasy, unsure what to do. Since having her daughter Alice, she had been busy taking care of her, avoiding Foster Newman’s insanity, and as Alice grew a bit older, she had to find ways to make money. She too had her youthful moments like other girls, pursuing shiny dreams, but later on, life wore her down.
If there was spare energy, who wouldn’t want to be a delicate and beautiful woman? But not everyone is that lucky.
And she was never a lucky person.
But in the past, she never cared about these matters, yet now she knew Lawyer Jones was defending her, and she felt embarrassed for him.
Nancy Newman saw Catherine’s reaction clearly, a smug smile curling her lips, just about to mock Catherine when Benjamin Jones pulled out a black gold card from his suit pocket and handed it to Catherine, "I’ve asked you to keep this before; you never listened. Now people think I’m stingy, right? You should listen from now on."
Catherine blankly received the gold card from him, staring at him dazedly, but met his usual cool, indifferent deep eyes, her heart trembled gently, and she obediently murmured an agreement.
"Let’s go." Benjamin Jones glanced at the time, no longer wanting to entangle with these people.
Catherine, knowing his time was precious, hurried to follow.
Nancy Newman and Kyle Carter were still in a daze, a dance teacher nearby exclaimed, "I know that card; it’s the HQ Bank’s black gold card, only those with assets over a hundred million possess it, there’s no spending limit, oh my, Alice’s mom is really full of surprises."
"No way?" another female teacher gasped.
"Why would I lie to you, my dad earns tens of millions a year, and even he doesn’t meet the requirements for a black gold card," the teacher said, clicking her tongue and then suddenly turned to Miss Bess, "I saw it, it was that little boy who started it."
Miss Bess still remembered the look that man gave her, her heart still terrified, now hearing her colleague’s words she was even more frightened, turning to Nancy’s family her tone colder, "How about this, Mr. and Mrs. Henry, I’ll pull up the surveillance footage for you to see?"
They all knew that although Alice accidentally pushed Henry Carter over, it was Henry who had instigated the trouble first.
"No... no need," Nancy answered awkwardly, she had arrived early and was well aware of what had happened, but relying on the fact that Miss Bess’s child was going to Kyle’s school this year, she had deliberately made things difficult for Catherine Ford. She couldn’t believe Catherine had ended up with such an outstanding man.
Turning to look at her husband, seeing Kyle Carter still staring in the direction Catherine left, she couldn’t help but pull him angrily, "What’s there to look at? Aren’t you ashamed!"
Not to mention the card the man had shown, just his demeanor and appearance were something Kyle could never match in his lifetime.
Nancy had previously thought quite highly of Kyle, but now she found him displeasing no matter how she looked.
Kyle Carter snapped back to reality, "Wife, don’t be upset. Women like her, even if they latch onto a wealthy man, won’t last long. She should look at herself, people probably just find her novel."
"Exactly." Nancy Newman felt much relieved after hearing that, but still not satisfied with being at a disadvantage, she sent a message to Foster Newman, "Brother, I know where your wife is now."
After sending the message, Nancy Newman curled her lips, picked up her son who was still sobbing, and with a face full of disdain, handed him over to Kyle Carter, "Such a wimp, wonder who he takes after."
Kyle Carter smiled awkwardly at Miss Bess and others, holding his son as he left, but he still thought about Catherine Ford. Had she really hooked up with that man?
Catherine Ford stopped next to the car with Benjamin Jones, handing over the card to him, "Thank you, Lawyer Jones, for helping me out earlier."
When he said he liked women like her, her heart skipped a beat and she felt momentarily dizzy, but she quickly recovered. She wasn’t a naive girl, and she was already immensely grateful that Lawyer Jones could help her without daring to hope for anything more.
Benjamin Jones glanced at the black card, nodded, and pocketed it. Seeing her holding the child, he put the bag he was about to give her into the car and opened the door, "Get in first."
Catherine Ford instinctively wanted to refuse, but Benjamin Jones glanced behind her, "Let’s go."
Holding Alice, Catherine Ford’s body stiffened slightly, probably understanding the man’s concerns. She put Alice’s head into her chest a bit more, then carefully got into the car.
Benjamin Jones glanced at the unusually well-behaved girl in her arms, remembering the late-night call he received from Catherine Ford before, and seeing her trembling daughter held in her arms when they met. His heart felt a slight flutter, guessing that the child was introverted and didn’t think much further.
In the car, Catherine Ford thanked Benjamin Jones again, and finally, with some unease, explained, "I’m sorry, that... Kyle Carter was talking nonsense, please don’t take it to heart."
"Hmm." Benjamin Jones hadn’t taken it to heart originally. As a lawyer, he occasionally handled some pro bono legal cases. Catherine Ford’s case was not originally his responsibility, but just then an intern lawyer was unavailable due to family issues, and everyone else was busy, so he, being free, decided to do a good deed that day, yet he didn’t expect to almost lose his composure when he first met Catherine Ford.
Her large eyes were too much like Abby from the past, and her facial features also resembled her to some extent.
Perhaps because of this, he always had a bit more patience with her affairs.
However, as he got to know her better, he realized that although they had some physical resemblance, they were completely different in other aspects.
Abby was universally recognized as a prodigious young girl, while Catherine Ford was ordinary and mediocre; Abby was smart and resolute, Catherine Ford was gentle and timid; Abby was bright and bold, she was shy and quiet...
So, after the initial daze, he treated it as an ordinary case, but he didn’t know why every time this woman looked at him with those soft eyes, he would feel a sense of familiarity flash in his mind, involuntarily making him pay more attention to her.
Just like just now, he could have let the driver deliver her bag, but because of her hurried running figure, he felt compelled to deliver it himself and even backed her up.
Thinking of this, Benjamin Jones secretly shook his head, thinking he must have been foolishly upset by Brandon Piers recently to have acted out such a melodramatic scene.
However, seeing the woman’s dim eyes suddenly light up at that moment, he felt it was okay that he had acted after all.
The car got back on the road, Benjamin Jones gave the driver Catherine Ford’s initially mentioned address and then closed his eyes to feign sleep.
Feeling the calm around her, Alice finally poked her little head out, cautiously glancing at the handsome uncle who seemed to be asleep next to her, and asked Catherine Ford in an exceptionally soft, milky voice, "Mommy, is he Daddy?"
Catherine Ford, because Benjamin Jones was feigning sleep, did not stop her daughter from raising her head, but was utterly shocked when Alice asked such a question, panicking and quickly covering her daughter’s mouth.
Alice was frightened, sobbing and struggling in Catherine Ford’s arms.
"Alice, be good, listen..." Catherine, due to her anxiety, hugged her daughter even tighter, softly cooing but only frightening Alice more. Once she let go, the long-suffering Alice burst into tears.
Benjamin Jones opened his eyes and looked towards the mother and daughter.
Catherine, feeling the man’s gaze, startled and tried to bury Alice’s head in her embrace, but this only made Alice cry even harder.
Benjamin Jones, with a complex look, glanced at the woman and suddenly reached out his hand, "Alice, don’t cry, can uncle give you a hug?"
In Catherine’s arms, the greatly distressed little girl suddenly heard this, turned her head with teary eyes to look at the man.
In an instant, Catherine’s heart was taut as a bowstring, her voice nearly trembling as she refused the man, "Sorry...sorry, Alice is not very used to being hugged by strangers."
"Uncle hug..." Right after Catherine finished speaking, Alice turned her head, reached out her small hands, and amidst her baby voice still tinged with sobs, she struggled towards Benjamin’s direction.
Catherine was so startled by this turn of events that she became immobile, while Benjamin quickly reached out his long arms and took Alice into his arms.
The little girl who had been crying in her mother’s arms instantly stopped her wailing, her large eyes curiously looking at Benjamin, and in her childish voice asked, "Uncle, are you Daddy?"
Mommy said the bad guy isn’t Daddy, Daddy is a big hero, and since uncle helped mommy, he must be a big hero, so he must be Daddy, right?
Benjamin looked at the little girl with a red nose from crying, and his heart as tough as iron softened, "Why do you think I’m Daddy?"
"Because uncle is a big hero," the girl naively answered.
Benjamin rarely smiled, "Why is uncle a big hero?"
The little girl raised her head and thought seriously, "Because uncle always helps mommy."
Benjamin was convinced by the child’s logic, being a big hero because he helped her mom, and being her dad because he is a big hero.
Chuckling and shaking his head, he tapped the little girl’s nose, "You praise uncle so much, uncle will reward you with a gift, what would you like?"
He couldn’t be the little girl’s dad, but he couldn’t bear to see the beautiful, doll-like little girl cry, so he distracted her attention.
Alice was indeed attracted by the gift, her cheeks still wet with tears, she asked a bit cautiously, "Uncle, can you treat me to cake? Mommy says you can only have cake on birthdays, but Alice wants it now."
After speaking, she thought again, "When I earn money later, I’ll also treat uncle."
Catherine had recovered from the earlier fright by now and realizing that Benjamin hadn’t noticed anything, came to understand she had been worried over nothing, and let out a big sigh of relief. But the next moment, hearing Alice and Benjamin’s conversation made her tense again, until her daughter asked Benjamin for cake, then she stumbled, followed by her cheeks turning pink, and hurriedly explained, "I’m afraid she’s getting her teeth and sweet food will cause cavities." It wasn’t about being stingy or mistreating the child.
Benjamin heard the embarrassment in her voice, and seeing Alice’s disappointed little expression, his lips curved up again, and he said to Catherine nearby, "Having a piece occasionally is fine."
"Oh." Catherine replied awkwardly, seeing her daughter’s bright eyes she couldn’t bear to refuse, and she also had her own reasons, this was the first gift Benjamin was getting Alice, and it was a birthday cake, it could be considered a form of compensation for the child,
Alice didn’t expect her mom to agree, and her little body shook with joy, filling the entire car with a light and airy happiness.
Benjamin Jones instructed the driver to stop at a shopping mall and then took the mother and son to buy a cake.
Catherine Ford relaxed both physically and mentally when she noticed that Benjamin didn’t detect anything unusual about Alice; she followed behind them, her gaze tender.
While choosing the cake, Benjamin Jones, with Alice in his arms, went from one to another. The man, usually so stern and serious, showed immense patience with the child. Catherine quietly stood behind them, her eyes uncontrollably reddening.
Thinking back to that past mistake, she knew all too well the chasm between them—vast as mountains and seas. She needed to look at him from behind, mustering courage to gaze upon him openly.
She used to think mediocrity was okay, as most people in the world were ordinary like her; admitting one’s ordinariness wasn’t shameful. But upon re-encountering him, she realized, while there was nothing wrong with being ordinary, she could never touch the bright moon.
The gravel can only look up at the bright moon.
While Catherine Ford was lost in thought, Alice had already picked a cake and happily ran to her side, "Mom, can I eat it now?"
Catherine Ford looked at the tall man and nodded gently.
The little girl hugging her leg cheered and turned back, rushing to the man’s side. Benjamin Jones picked up Alice and took her to eat the cake.
Catherine Ford sat aside, watching Alice’s joyful face with a heart full of pain.
Because of Foster Newman, Alice seldom had such happy moments. She was more sensible and considerate than most children, always cautious. But sitting next to Benjamin Jones, she looked as blissful as any ordinary child. Catherine’s nose tingled; she took out her phone and quietly snapped a few photos. However, she became flustered when she felt his gaze, "I’m taking photos of Alice."
Benjamin Jones looked at the woman who always seemed frightened, thought about her ex-husband, and probably understood. His voice, cold and detached, said simply, "That’s okay."
Catherine Ford responded softly, then looked down at the photos of the two of them. She had lied to him.
After finishing the cake, Catherine Ford didn’t want to impose on Benjamin Jones any further and took Alice to say goodbye. Alice, reluctant to part with Benjamin but with tears in her eyes, obediently waved to him, "Uncle Benjamin, goodbye."
Benjamin Jones looked at the soft, extremely pretty little girl with a gentle gaze, "See you next time."
He remembered Catherine Ford was moving to Rose Valley. The next meeting should be soon.
As they left the shopping mall, Alice slipped down from Catherine Ford’s arms, "Mom, I can walk by myself."
Catherine Ford’s feet were blistered, so she nodded, and was about to look for the bus, when Benjamin Jones’s driver hurried over, "Miss Ford, your belongings."
"Mine?" Catherine Ford took it with confusion, but the driver had already turned to leave. When she opened the bag, inside was a pair of low-heeled shoes. She paused, looking towards the not-too-distant figure; the man was just getting into his car, leaving her his profile, which soon disappeared with the departing vehicle.
Alice, noticing her mom hadn’t spoken for a while, looked up curiously, "Mom, what’s that?"
Catherine Ford thought for a moment, "A gift."
