Chapter 793: Chapter 793: Has the young lady misunderstood herself?

Although the security had driven those people out, Abigail knew this was only the beginning.

Moon Lake Manor in Swallow City was a very unique existence, worth billions. It was extremely valuable but unavailable in the market. Previously with Brandon suppressing things, those coveting it could only do so secretly.

Now that Brandon was in trouble, the situation had changed.

As Abigail and the others left, the coldness on her face turned into bewilderment.

The commotion these people caused today pulled her back from the emotional world to the harsh reality.

Brandon was in trouble, but her life still had to continue.

"Madam, are you all right?" Housekeeper Piers saw Abigail standing there blankly and approached worriedly.

Abigail snapped back and shook her head. "What’s wrong with Grandfather?"

"Since the old master was discharged from the hospital last time, he’s been unwell. Now with Brandon in such a big trouble, and with today’s disturbance by those idle people, it has taken a toll on him." Housekeeper Piers sighed lightly.

"I’ll go see Grandfather. Where is Teddy?" Abigail asked as she briskly walked towards the main house.

"Little Master and Tate are upstairs, playing with Aunt Claudia and Miss Locke," Housekeeper Piers quickly replied.

Abigail froze for a moment. "Miss Locke came?"

She found it somewhat strange that Sophia would come at this time, but didn’t overthink it. Muttering to herself, she went to see Grayson Piers.

The old master’s age made him susceptible to stress. Over the past few days, he obviously worried excessively about Brandon’s situation, deteriorating his spirits considerably.

Abigail checked on him and sighed softly. "Grandfather, I will find a way to deal with Brandon’s matter. What’s most important for you now is to recover well."

"I’ve lived long enough, there’s no point in recovery. As for that boy, I’m not worried about him." The old master said insincerely.

Abigail didn’t believe him. How much the old master cared for Brandon, she knew well. Saying he wasn’t worried was merely to comfort her. She tried to smile at the old master. "You may not worry about Brandon, but Brandon is definitely worried about you. So, you must stay healthy."

"He’s the last one to worry about me," the old master murmured. He then looked deeply at Abigail. "Abigail, if Brandon really has to stay inside for ten years or so, what are you going to do?"

Abigail didn’t expect this sudden question and was stunned for a while. "I haven’t thought about it. Brandon said he was innocent, so I will find a way to get evidence to clear his name."

In the massive room, Abigail’s voice was not loud, but it was filled with a resolute sense of strength, making the old master on the sickbed dazed.

The old man hadn’t expected to hear this from Abigail. Even he had believed his grandson was guilty when faced with the evidence from the prosecution and Brandon’s silence.

Others might not know, but he was aware that though Brandon seemed gentlemanly, he was inherently ruthless and unscrupulous in the business world. This matter didn’t seem like his style, yet it didn’t mean he was innocent.

Thus, hearing Abigail’s unconditional belief in Brandon, just based on Brandon’s own declaration, surprised and deeply moved him.

The old master felt a little ashamed of his previous pettiness and recent probing. Now, upon reflection, he realized his grandson’s decision might not be entirely beneficial for Abigail. As the saying goes, a man is innocent, but bearing a treasure makes him guilty.

If Brandon remained unscathed, it would be fine. But if he ended up being imprisoned for ten years as per the recent verdict, whoever inherited the manor would bear significant responsibility.

Reflecting deeply, Grayson concluded that the manor was best left in Abigail’s hands.

Setting aside his earlier dissatisfaction with his grandson’s casual reassignment of the manor, Grayson now saw Abigail’s character and attitude towards Brandon and understood the mutual devotion between them.

Abigail deserved the manor, courtesy of Brandon’s good judgment.

However, Grayson could not hand over the transfer documents to Abigail now. Public disclosure might lead to unfounded speculations.

Taking a deep breath, the elderly man in bed said, "Abigail, I will find a way for Brandon’s matter. Don’t worry too much."

Abigail barely nodded, knowing they were mutually comforting each other.

After leaving the old master’s room, Abigail didn’t head upstairs to check on Teddy immediately. Instead, she asked Housekeeper Piers to bring her the manor’s financial records and personnel list.

Housekeeper Piers didn’t dare delay and quickly organized the requested documents for her.

Abigail had only glanced at the records briefly when she felt overwhelmed. She had anticipated high expenses, but the manor’s costs exceeded her imagination. Between servants, chefs, and security salaries alone, it amounted nearly to a million. Additionally, the costs for living expenses added up to monthly totals of just under two million.

Putting down the documents, Abigail suddenly felt Moon Lake Manor wasn’t as appealing.

No wonder Brandon had an odd expression when she mentioned supporting him. He probably worried she wouldn’t manage.

Worse still, these were just the costs for Moon Lake Manor. Adding the expenses for the old estate in Gills City and Brandon’s other properties, maintenance totaled around two to three million monthly.

Abigail took a deep breath and handed her card to Housekeeper Piers. "Uncle, take this card first."

Housekeeper Piers looked at the card in her hand, not understanding her intention. "What’s this for?"

"After Brandon’s investigation, many assets were frozen, weren’t they? Use this card to pay the manor’s employees," Abigail said, feeling a bit unworthy.

Housekeeper Piers initially intended to refuse, but upon considering that the second master’s assets were in the madam’s hands and the dividends too, he knew she had to deal with this responsibly. Hence, he respectfully accepted the card.

Abigail had thought Uncle Piers would politely refuse, but she was wrong.

What lightly stung before now sharply pained her when Housekeeper Piers took the card. Her eye twitched several times.

Housekeeper Piers, perceiving her discomfort, asked, "Madam, are your eyes inflamed? Do you need a doctor?"

Abigail forced a smile. "No, it’s fine."

Recalling Abigail was a doctor herself, Housekeeper Piers didn’t question further.

Abigail continued to smile forcefully as she told him, "Uncle, Brandon’s incident has had a huge impact. Similar things might happen again. You’ve been with the Piers family for years and likely know these people somewhat. Help me spread the word that anyone who wishes to stay can remain. Those who don’t should submit their resignation. Besides settling this month’s salary, we will compensate them for three more months. But if anyone dares collude with outsiders, don’t blame me for being harsh."

Housekeeper Piers hadn’t expected Abigail to be so decisive. Letting those people in today felt strange to him. Normally, they wouldn’t get near the manor, let alone the main house.

It showed how deeply Brandon’s incident had affected everyone at the manor.

The biggest fear now was division among the people.

Housekeeper Piers understood Abigail’s intention and immediately went to handle it.

After the housekeeper left, Abigail heard a slight sound from the second floor. Turning her head, she saw the quiet, neighborly girl, Sophia Patel.

Sophia seemed surprised to see Abigail discussing matters with the housekeeper on the first floor. Looking somewhat embarrassed as she was caught, she said, "I’m sorry, Mrs. Piers, am I disturbing you?"

"No problem." Abigail’s face softened. Then she thought of something, "From now on, just call me Abigail." freewebnøvel.com

After saying this, she suddenly remembered that she was actually younger than Sophia. Fortunately, Sophia didn’t even think about it and immediately replied, calling her tentatively, "Abigail."

"Yeah, I’ll have the driver take you home." Abigail then called Peter and had him arrange to take Sophia back.

While waiting, Sophia seemed to muster a lot of courage and stepped forward, "Abigail, everything will pass."

Abigail was slightly stunned, then smiled at the girl, "Thank you."

Sophia also smiled back at Abigail. Her serene face had a slight blush from the newfound courage to speak.

Abigail looked at her without saying more.

After Sophia left, Abigail went upstairs.

Teddy was playing happily, covered in sweat. Aunt Claudia was dragging him and Tate to take a bath, but the two little rascals used the opportunity to play with water.

Standing nearby watching, Kelly approached Abigail and whispered, "What did the second young master say?"

Everyone wanted to know if there was still a chance to resolve the second young master’s issue.

Abigail shook her head.

Kelly’s face turned pale, "Is it because the court won’t allow visits?"

Abigail shook her head again, not sure how to explain it to Kelly.

Seeing Abigail’s reaction, Kelly didn’t ask further. The two stood there watching the children play, but the atmosphere was noticeably different.

At dinner, Grandfather Piers was bedridden and couldn’t come out. Abigail ate a few bites with Teddy. The entire manor was in a state of panic.

Especially after Housekeeper Piers conveyed Abigail’s intentions to everyone, some people began to resign, making the manor’s atmosphere even heavier.

News of the resignations was leaked to the media that night. Abigail’s previous success in losing weight, showing love with Brandon Piers, and her identity as a researcher had gained her many fans but also a lot of envy. Now with Brandon in trouble and Grandfather Piers sick, the chaos in the manor attracted a lot of ridicule.

Many people were waiting to see Abigail’s downfall. Some socialite who previously liked Brandon even declared they were waiting for Abigail to be kicked out of the manor.

Because of this statement, people remembered that although Brandon and Abigail had children and were engaged, they were not legally married.

Regardless of their relationship, without legal recognition, it meant nothing.

People are driven by interest. Some marketing accounts that used to flatter Abigail immediately turned against her, maliciously defaming and insulting her everywhere.

After Teddy fell asleep, Abigail opened her phone to see many missed calls. Some were from Lena Locke, others from Gills City, and the last one from Benjamin Jones.

She was about to return the calls when Kelvin Max’s number came in.

Upon answering, Abigail learned about what had happened online. She sighed lightly, unsurprised. The saying "When the wall falls, everyone pushes" seemed fitting.

Kelvin heard Abigail’s sigh. Glancing around, he reminded her, "Madam, please avoid going online these days. I will handle these matters."

Abigail acknowledged with a hum, then thought of the card she gave to Housekeeper Piers today. She suddenly asked, "Secretary Max, is your salary high?"

Kelvin was caught off guard, "Madam, do you mean...?"

"He’s inside now. We don’t even know if he can come out. If your salary is too high... ahem, I might not be able to afford it." Abigail said this halfway and awkwardly coughed. She had heard occasionally that secretaries like Kelvin could have annual salaries in the millions.

She barely maintained the manor with the Piers’ previous dividends. If she had to support Kelvin and Kennan too, she would probably be bankrupt within a year.

Kelvin, "..." Madam, you might have some misunderstanding about your wealth.

Not to mention Moon Lake Manor and those real estate funds. With shares in ROSE Technology, if Romeo does well and it goes public in three years, you could be worth billions!

"Don’t worry. The second young master already paid my salary until the end of the year." Kelvin’s inner turmoil was masked by his calm voice.

Abigail felt relieved, "That’s good."

But after saying this, she felt quite unworthy.

Nevertheless, Abigail hesitated for a moment before cautiously asking Kelvin, "Can you see the second young master?"

Kelvin glanced at the man next to him focused on typing something, "No."

"Kelvin, tell me the truth. What’s really going on? Even if the second young master did something illegal, it’s impossible for him to get caught with such severe evidence. Did Joshua frame him? Why won’t he see me? Does he have more leverage on us?" Abigail’s emotions suddenly became unstable upon hearing Kelvin’s reply.

"I don’t know about that." Kelvin looked again at the person who had obviously pricked up his ears, trying to sound as professional and emotionless as possible.

Abigail was not surprised by Kelvin’s answer but still felt a sense of uncontrollable loss.

After hanging up Kelvin’s call, Abigail no longer felt like returning other calls. Instead, she opened Twitter and indeed saw many people mocking and insulting her. But the abuse quickly disappeared. After scrolling for a while and finding nothing, she sighed with relief at Kelvin’s swift actions, despite his cold response.

Logging out of Twitter, Abigail’s mood was not necessarily worse, just more confused. Brandon’s refusal to see her and Benjamin meant he gave up the chance to appeal. Giving up the chance to appeal meant he would spend ten years in prison.

Ten years was too long. She couldn’t accept it. But now, she had no idea where to start. The determination she showed in front of Grandfather Piers was completely gone.

In her daze, Abigail’s phone beeped with a message. Opening it, she saw Benjamin’s brief text, "Happy Birthday!"

Abigail finally remembered her twentieth birthday.

Sighing lightly, she thanked him. Opening Facebook, she saw birthday wishes from Lena and others. An unknown contact also sent birthday wishes, which she didn’t bother opening, casually tossing her phone aside.

Meanwhile, after hanging up her call, Kelvin glanced at the man still fiddling with his phone and couldn’t help but urge softly, "Captain Scout is waiting for you. Shall we go?"

The silent man finally looked up, showing an ordinary face. He nodded to Kelvin.
