Chapter 227 - Cassandra And Sasha!

Esdeath's unconscious body shifted slightly on the bed, and after a few seconds, her eyelids slowly opened. Even though she had passed out from the unbearable pain, her body somehow woke up again on its own.

She blinked several times, her vision still blurry, and gently moved her fingers, then her hand, testing her body. Every little motion felt strange, as if she had just come back from a long, painful dream. With effort, she slowly sat up and looked around her room.

Her eyes wandered toward the window. It was still night. The moonlight poured in, soft and quiet. Esdeath rubbed her forehead gently with her palm. The intense pain she had felt before was now a little less, but her body still felt heavy and stiff. Her head was still pounding, like someone had left a hammer inside her skull.

She took a deep breath and carefully stood up. Her legs trembled slightly, but she managed to stay on her feet. Moving slowly, she walked toward the drawer near her bedside. Her steps were shaky, and she felt like she was walking through water.

She opened the drawer and took out the Rank B storage-type essence stone that Lortell had given her. Holding it in her hand, she poured her mana into it with effort. A soft blue glow came out, and then, from the storage space inside, she pulled out a Pain Nullification essence stone.

Without wasting any time, she used it right away. The moment she activated it, a wave of relief washed over her. The pain in her head faded, and the heaviness in her chest lessened. Her breathing calmed a little, and she sat there quietly, trying to feel better.

But even though the pain and headache were gone, something still didn't feel right. Her body was still heavy, and strange emotions bubbled up inside her. It was like she was drowning in feelings she couldn't describe — sadness, confusion, something close to depression.

That was the problem with the Pain Nullification stone — it only blocked the feeling of pain. It didn't actually heal anything. The wounds were still there, hidden under the surface, That was the cause of this.

Esdeath slowly returned to her bed, walking as if her legs were made of stone. She sat down the same way as before, not making a single sound, her expression calm but distant.

"I should check the rest of the things first," she whispered to herself, trying to stay focused.

She closed her eyes and thought the word "Status" in her mind. In an instant, a glowing window appeared in front of her, displaying all of her information.

Current Skills in Possession:

* Veteran Shooter (B) – Upgradable: When used, time slows down for 18 seconds. Can be used once every 20 minutes.

* Spiritual Gaze (C) – (Cannot Be Upgraded): Can see over great distances with high precision. Also allows user to see the flow of mana and view the world at 400 frames per second, Can see Spirtual beings.

* Paralyze Bullet (D) – Not Upgradable Further: After using this skill, the first bullet fired every ten minutes will carry a paralyzing effect. It can immobilize monsters and awakened individuals up to High-Tier D-rank for around 20 minutes.

* Echo of Restoration (B) – Upgradable: Heals wounds 'quickly' by "echoing" moments in time when the user was uninjured. Injuries slowly mend to match their previous healthy state. (Can Be Used Thrice In A Day)

* Temporal Metabolism (B) – Upgradable: Reduces potion digestion and absorption time by 80%. Potions can now be stacked up to 9 times for stronger effects.

Esdeath stared at the glowing screen in front of her without saying a word. Her eyes carefully scanned through the information, going over each skill and stat.

She saw all her previous skills and noticed that her stats had now crossed a thousand — strength, stamina, and speed were all above 1100. But there were also small changes in the skill names and descriptions that caught her attention.

Her old skill Elite Shooter had changed to Veteran Shooter, and the description of Echo of Restoration now used the word Quickly instead of gradually. That meant her wounds would now heal much faster than before. And the number of uses had increased too. Before, she could only use it twice. Now she could use it three times. It felt like a small but important upgrade.

However, not everything was perfect. Her eyes stopped on the skill Spiritual Gaze. It was the same. No changes. No upgrades. That made her frown slightly.

But then she noticed the line written below it: "Can't be upgraded further."

A soft sigh escaped her lips.

"So she didn't have the next rank of this essence stone, huh..." she whispered to herself, feeling a little disappointed but not surprised. She shook her head and scrolled down to check the rest of her skills.

New skills had appeared in her status — names like Rewind Steps and Steal Life stood out. She would check them properly later, but right now, there was something else that caught her attention.

Her eyes landed on the SP points. 70630.

She gulped.

That number was tempting. Very tempting.

"What should I do?" she thought, her fingers twitching slightly with indecision. "Should I wait until it reaches one hundred thousand... or should I use it now to upgrade my skills or get new ones?"

She stared at the screen for a long time, feeling torn. Both options had their own benefits. Saving it might unlock something big. But using it now could make her stronger right away.

After thinking for a while, she slowly shook her head.

"No... let's not use it yet."

She looked down at her hands, clenching and unclenching them as she thought deeper.

"Let's focus on upgrading my endurance first. I already have the Iron Bones and Black Iron Bones essence stones. I even have the skin and muscle enhancement essences. I just need to use them."

But her gaze shifted, and she looked at Selene, who was still sleeping peacefully beside her.

She sighed again.

"But I can't do that right now. I have to wait until tomorrow... I have to endure this until then."

She laid back down on the bed, slowly and carefully, her body still feeling heavy. Her mind was still full of thoughts.

"If I use the bone-converting essences now, the side effects will hit me hard," she reminded herself. "Normally, I wouldn't be able to move for three days after using Iron Bones. And if I use Black Iron Bones... I won't be able to move for a whole week."

Her hands slowly rested on her stomach as she stared at the ceiling in silence.

"I guess I'll have to use the Time Path essence stone again... I'll have to speed up my time by sacrificing more of my lifespan."

Her thoughts became slower and slower. Her eyelids grew heavier, and soon, her breathing turned soft and steady. The room was quiet, with only the soft sound of Selene's breathing nearby.

Esdeath's mind drifted into sleep, holding onto the plan she would carry out tomorrow — even if it meant hurting herself again.

------------------------------

Morning sunlight softly peeked through the window as Maruti's eyes fluttered open. She slowly sat up on the bed, groaning a little and holding her head with one hand as she rubbed her temples. Her other hand instinctively pulled the bed sheet up to cover her bare chest. She blinked and looked to her side.

Kaelith was lying there, sleeping peacefully with a calm, satisfied smile on her face. Both of them were naked under the sheets, and the bite marks on Maruti's neck, chest, and back clearly showed what had happened between them all night.

"Only once, huh? What a liar," Maruti muttered under her breath with an annoyed expression. "And now she's sleeping like she's dreaming about swimming in a sea of gold coins."

She narrowed her eyes but didn't wake her up. Waking up Kaelith now would only create more trouble.

Maruti quietly got out of bed, moving slowly so she wouldn't make any noise. Just like every morning, she followed her usual routine. She washed her face, brushed her teeth, and changed into some comfortable casual clothes. Then she grabbed her neatly folded academy uniform and left for the public bath.

As she stepped into the academy's large and beautifully designed bath area, she looked around out of habit, expecting to see Esdeath somewhere. But Esdeath wasn't there. Instead, her eyes landed on Lortell, sitting quietly by herself. Maruti quickly turned her head and walked in the other direction, making sure not to catch Lortell's attention.

After finishing her bath, she changed into her academy uniform and made her way to the classroom. Today was the first official day back at the academy, after it had been closed for nearly a month due to the terrifying events that happened.

When Maruti entered Class A's classroom, she saw a few students already sitting at their desks. Class A had always been a small group, made up of only the most talented students — usually between twenty and thirty students, rarely more. She recognized most of the faces. Despite the horrors of that night, many students from Class A had survived. And even though a few were killed... some of them had actually been killed by Maruti herself. Of course, no one in the room knew that.

She quietly walked toward the second-last seat in the middle row. On her way, a skinny boy with glasses and messy orange hair, Valen, noticed her. He smiled warmly and waved at her.

Maruti gave him a small, polite wave in return, but she didn't stop to chat. She quietly walked to her seat and sat down, her eyes scanning the classroom.

"Esdeath isn't here either... Did something happen to her?" Maruti wondered, her fingers resting under her chin. "She told me that new characters would be appearing soon... She said she'd tell me which ones are dangerous, which ones we should stay close to, and which ones need to die."

She looked around again. Kaelith wasn't here either. "She's probably still sleeping," Maruti thought. "Alice is from Class B, so she can't come in here anyway. Good. That's very good..."

She felt strangely happy and relaxed. No one was bothering her. No one was following her. It was a rare, peaceful moment.

Still, she kept glancing toward the door, waiting for Esdeath to arrive. But she never did.

Instead, a teacher walked into the classroom.

All the students stood up from their seats and greeted her respectfully. She was a new face — someone they hadn't seen before. Many of the academy's old teachers had died during the chaos, so it wasn't a surprise to see a fresh recruit.

The teacher smiled at them brightly.

"Hello everyone! My name is Hestia Corneal," she said in a cheerful voice. "I'll be your new teacher for Financial Budget and Commerce!"

At first, the entire class went quiet. Then some students started whispering and glancing at each other in confusion. Why was someone teaching finance in a place where magic was the main focus?

Seeing their puzzled faces, Hestia laughed lightly and continued speaking.

"I understand why you might be confused," she said with a kind smile. "But here's the thing — a lot of knights, adventurers, and even nobles go out into the world and earn money... but they don't know how to handle it. They don't know how to make deals or plan their spending, and they end up losing money, falling into debt, and it limits their future. This subject will help you avoid that."

The students began nodding slowly as her words started to make sense.

Hestia then clapped her hands gently and smiled even wider.

"Now, since this is technically the first day back... and we have some new students in Class A, why don't we start with introductions?" she said with a friendly tone.

She said as she looked outside, where a few new students were standing, waiting for their turn to enter the class.

One by one, the new students came in and introduced themselves. Some looked nervous, some looked overly confident. Maruti, however, didn't even bother to look up. Her head was resting on her hand, eyes half-closed, mouth slightly open as she yawned again and again. Her fingers lazily tapped the desk.

She didn't hear the names, didn't care about the faces. Just one boring introduction after another. She felt like sleeping right there on her desk.

That was, until the last two students were left outside.

As the second-to-last student stepped in, Maruti was nearly asleep, her vision blurry. But then—she caught a glimpse of silver hair.

Her body instantly jolted awake, her back straightening and eyes wide open.

Kailith?!

But as her sleepy eyes cleared up, she realized it wasn't Kailith.

Still, she looked... striking.

The girl had silver hair, but it had a soft blue tint, almost like moonlight reflecting on water. Her eyes were a deep, calm blue, and her skin was smooth and pale like porcelain. She wasn't smiling, nor frowning—her face was blank, unreadable. She looked like someone who had read a thousand books and never spoken a word about them.

There was something mysterious about her, something that made the whole class go quiet for a moment.

Then, the girl gently bowed her head and introduced herself, her voice calm and emotionless.

"I'm Cassandra Mariette. I'll be in your care."

Maruti blinked. "Mariette?" Her eyes narrowed slightly. "Is she related to Lortell? Maybe her sister? Cousin?"

She hadn't expected another Mariette to show up.

Cassandra wasn't even supposed to be here this year—she was supposed to join the academy next year. But after all the chaos, and the sudden re-exams, she had taken the tests and passed them with flying colors. Now, she stood in Class A like she belonged there.

Even the other students started whispering, confusion and curiosity spreading like wildfire.

The teacher quickly cleared things up.

"I know you're all wondering. Even though Cassandra is from the Mariette family, she came first in the written entrance exam and second in the strength and combat tests."

Although everytime students were selected by written entrance exams but this time they even took strength and combat session too, Although it didn't mattered if they performed low, They would still be selected as long as they pass the exams with good marks.

It actually helped in determine which class they should go since strength and combat was more important than study here.

"Please take that seat by the window," the teacher said, pointing.

Cassandra nodded silently and walked over. Her movements were graceful, yet quiet. She sat down, her eyes calmly scanning the room like she was taking mental notes.

Although previous question was settled, But that made the class go even more silent. Now, everyone had just one question:

"Who got first place in the strength and combat test?"

Their answer came right after.

The door opened again. And the last student stepped in.

The whole classroom turned to look.

She was tall. So tall, she had to duck a little to enter the room. Her body was strong, with muscles that showed she was a fighter—but that didn't take away her beauty. She had deep, tanned skin, fiery vermillion hair and sharp, confident blue eyes.

Her presence was overwhelming. Like she didn't just walk into the classroom—she owned it.

And yet, despite her powerful look... there was something familiar about her.

Maruti stared, her eyes going wide. Her jaw slowly dropped.

Her heart skipped a beat.

Because the woman standing at the front of the class...

Wasn't a stranger.

It was her big sister.

Sasha.
