Chapter 40: Fireball

"Freeze!"

At her command, Igaris’s feet were instantly trapped in an icy, iron-like cage.

Stunned, he looked back to see Nina smirking.

"Do you know what kind of beast I have? You might think it’s just an ordinary wyvern, but let me tell you—it’s an Arctic Wyvern. It’s no less formidable than a real dragon."

As she spoke, she stepped forward, radiating a chilling aura that surrounded her like an Ice Empress. freeweɓnovel.cѳm

She extended her hand and conjured an icicle arrow in an instant.

"Whoosh!"

The arrow shot through the air, piercing the enchanted dummy with ruthless precision.

"Bang!"

The wooden dummy exploded from the middle, and the arrow slammed into the metal wall behind it, leaving a dent in the reinforced plating.

Igaris watched with a spark of admiration in his eyes—but he wasn’t going to give up so easily.

Just as Nina turned to glance at Igaris, a sharp boom echoed behind her.

"Y-You?"

She whipped around, eyes widening as she saw flames erupting at his feet. The ice cage that had trapped him shattered violently, shards flying as steam hissed into the air.

Igaris stood tall in the rising mist, his foot slightly scorched, skin flushed red from the heat.

"You’re insane," Nina breathed, staring at him in disbelief. "You’d burn yourself just to break free?"

His expression didn’t waver.

"To me, getting scorched is better than being shackled," he muttered, eyes glowing faintly with defiance.

Nina’s eyes narrowed, her expression shifting from surprise to amusement.

"So... you do have a spine after all," she said, conjuring another icicle arrow and spinning it lazily in her fingers. "Fine then, Darkfire. Let’s see what you’re really made of."

Igaris raised an eyebrow. "Darkfire?"

She grinned. "That’s what I’m calling you from now on. You’re all gloom and flames."

He rolled his eyes. "Fine. What do you want?"

"A duel. Training purpose only." She tapped her temple with the arrow. "No grudges. First one to land a clean hit wins."

Igaris cracked his knuckles. "Deal."

They moved to the center of the reinforced training chamber. The air thickened, her icy aura swirling with frost, while his fire pulsed in waves of heat. The temperature shifted erratically between hot and cold.

"Start!" Nina snapped, already leaping sideways and launching two icicle arrows.

Igaris ducked under one, letting the second graze his shoulder, melting on contact with his inner heat. He retaliated, hurling a fireball toward her flank.

Nina spun midair, conjuring a circular frost shield that absorbed the flames, sending vapor hissing in all directions.

"You’ll have to do better!" she taunted, landing gracefully and summoning a trail of frost beneath her feet, skating toward him with alarming speed.

Igaris was well aware of his weakness.

His fireball was straightforward useful for offense and basic defense but lacked the versatility Nina’s icy abilities offered. She could shape, control, and adapt her ice mid-combat with frightening precision, turning the battlefield to her advantage.

Her power clearly outclassed his, for now.

But this was just a training match. And facing a seasoned fighter like Nina was an opportunity, not a defeat.

With every cast, every movement, Igaris could feel his control improving. His mana flowed smoother, more efficiently. The fireball that once wavered now burned with tighter focus and greater power.

He was learning. Fast.

And he had no intention of staying beneath her for long.

Nina had only invited Igaris to this spar to put him in his place. A new recruit with a Dark Affinity and an attitude—she figured he needed a reminder of who stood higher in the hierarchy.

But the more they clashed, the more her confidence wavered.

With each exchange, Igaris’ attacks grew fiercer, more refined.

His fireballs—once unstable and wild—now blasted with focused destruction. His movement, initially predictable, had started adapting to her patterns. He had no special movement abilities, yet he was slowly keeping up with her agility and footwork.

That growth rate... it’s insane, she thought, gritting her teeth as she deflected another fireball that came faster and hotter than the last.

What unnerved her most, however, was his endurance.

Her Ice Arrows had pierced his side, left clear wounds. She’d seen the blood—but then, moments later, those injuries simply vanished, erased by an unnatural recovery speed.

That must be his Dark Affinity at work, she realized. Something about it is regenerating his body... like an Undead Beast’s ability.

Igaris, on the other hand, was carefully analyzing her. She was fast, precise, and skilled in controlling her ice. And when she summoned the image of a majestic Arctic Wyvern behind her to pressure him, he understood she wasn’t an ordinary Summoner.

She was an Apprentice Summoner, a respectable middle-tier. Far above novices, but still a long way from reaching her master’s realm.

With that realization came clarity.

Now that he understood the Summoner Rank system, the difference between Evernight and Leonardo was glaring. Evernight, for all her power, was still at the Champion level—a peak fighter, but not transcendent.

Leonardo, on the other hand, was a Master Summoner—a realm said to be capable of erasing entire cities with a single command.

Igaris narrowed his eyes at Nina, who summoned another ice spear, lips curled in amusement.

’Maybe when Evernight climbs two more ranks and reaches the Legendary Realm... only then would she be worthy of standing at Leonardo’s level.’

But that thought only lit a fire inside him.

He wasn’t going to wait around for others to grow.

He would surpass them all—Summoners, World Divers, even the Five Supremes if needed.

One step at a time. Starting here.

With Nina.

Igaris conjured one final Fireball.

But this time, he poured in everything—focus, mana, and will. Slowly, the sphere of flame formed in his hand, first the size of a basketball... then compressed tighter to that of a soccer ball... then even smaller.

Each second of compression made it denser, more volatile. The air around it shimmered with heat, mana pulsing in violent rhythm.

His palm trembled slightly, not from pain—but from the sheer power packed inside the orb.

This is it, he thought. The limit of what I can do right now...

Nina’s expression shifted. Her playful smirk faded into seriousness. She narrowed her eyes at the unstable, burning core in his hand.

She recognized the danger instantly.

That’s not just a bigger fireball. It’s a miniature explosion waiting to be released.

She inhaled deeply, then lifted both arms. Frosty mist curled around her like a blizzard being summoned into her veins. Behind her, the faint silhouette of her Arctic Wyvern roared silently.

This was no longer just a spar.

"I didn’t think I’d need this much power against a newbie," she muttered, conjuring a thick, jagged ice spear the length of a javelin. "But you’re no ordinary recruit, are you?"

She couldn’t wrap her head around it.

He had only just arrived.

And yet... he was already fighting on equal ground?

No, he’s not just improving—he’s evolving mid-battle. Every move I make, he learns. Adapts. Gets stronger. This shouldn’t be possible.

Nothing made sense.

She didn’t know that the truth behind Igaris’ rapid growth was deeper and darker than anything she or her master could have imagined.

And the world wasn’t ready for what he truly was.
