Qiao En had no time to react before the car door closed.
“Mr. Zhou!”
Trapped in Zhou Jin’an’s embrace, she felt a surge of annoyance and tried to break free, but he held her even tighter.
Qiao En reached out to pull on the car door, but as soon as she touched it, the locks snapped down.
The Maybach roared away from the parking lot, and as Cheng Lu lowered the partition, Zhou Jin’an released his hold, but Qiao En had nowhere to escape.
“Assistant Cheng, stop the car!”
Qiao En pounded on the partition, but Cheng Lu remained unmoved.
He obeyed Zhou Jin’an’s commands, and without his permission, would only drive onwards.
The car moved without obstacles, speeding along the broad asphalt road.
“Mr. Zhou, I’ve already made myself clear, why do you still insist on making things difficult for me?”
There was a hint of crying in Qiao En’s voice.
She wasn’t one to cry, but at that moment, she felt incredibly wronged.
She’d exerted all her energy to maintain distance from him, with all her heart and soul.
Without a prominent family background or a powerful backing, she was just one among thousands, powerless against any form of tyranny.
She’d resigned herself to fate, so why wouldn’t he let her go?
Zhou Jin’an said nothing, merely turning his head to look at Qiao En.
For the first time, he saw weakness and helplessness in her.
He just watched as Qiao En began to cry.
Having repressed her feelings for so long, she needed to let it all out.
Her face covered in tears, Zhou Jin’an’s frown deepened into a chuan character.
He was at a loss, not know how to comfort her.
“Come with me to see someone, and then I will take you back,” he said, his voice much gentler.
After speaking, he half-closed his eyes and leaned back in his seat, exuding an aura of low pressure.
“Meet who?”
Qiao En asked, her voice nasal.
Zhou Jin’an gave no reply.
The car drove from the city center to the suburbs, then continued toward an even more rural area.
The city’s towering buildings and bustling traffic faded into the distance, replaced by green waters and mountains and solid farm lands under foot.
The car interior was quiet, neither of them uttered a word.
Later on, Zhou Jin’an opened his eyes, his gaze fixed outside the window, revealing a look of unfamiliar yearning.
Having grown up in the suburbs, Qiao En was familiar with everything here.
Three years ago, to facilitate her father’s treatment, they moved to the city, and since then had not returned.
This trip was like a journey back to her old haunts.
They reached their destination only as the light was fading.
It was a small, somewhat desolate village.
Run-down houses were scattered throughout the village, most of them abandoned. Dust billowed as the car passed, and elderly people leaning on canes looked on.
After a while, the car stopped in front of a small courtyard.
Zhou Jin’an was the first to open the door and step out.
He pulled out a rusty key from under a stone at the courtyard’s entrance and opened the similarly rust-streaked lock. The gates swung open, revealing to Qiao En a row of three dilapidated bungalows.
“Clean this up,” Zhou Jin’an directed Cheng Lu.
Qiao En also stepped out of the car. It was somewhat cold in the mountains, and dressed lightly, she instinctively wrapped her arms around herself.
Zhou Jin’an’s deep gaze swept over her and he said, “Come with me to see someone.”
He strode forward, and Qiao En followed, not understanding what was happening.
The two walked along a winding mountain path for quite some time.
The night had fallen, and Qiao En switched on her phone’s flashlight, following closely in shaky steps.
Zhou Jin’an showed no signs of stopping.
He walked briskly, while the light from Qiao En’s flashlight chased after his footsteps.
Later, he climbed a hill.
The view from there was excellent; one could overlook the entire village.
But engulfed in the darkness of the night, the village was a black mass, nearly invisible.
“Didn’t you say you were bringing me to meet someone?”
Qiao En, holding her cellphone torch, asked suspiciously.
Zhou Jin’an nodded, turned to the side, and pointed towards a spot not far away, saying, “She is right there.”
Qiao En followed his gaze and couldn’t help but be startled.
Where Zhou Jin’an was pointing, there lay a grave.
He said he was bringing her to meet someone, Qiao En never imagined it would be a dead person.
The hairs on her arms stood on end instantly.
“Mr. Zhou, I want to go back.”
Zhou Jin’an must be crazy, how could she go along with his madness?
Qiao En turned around, her flashlight in hand, ready to follow the path back.
But behind her, Zhou Jin’an’s voice followed.
“Sister Rong, I’m here to see you. This is Qiao En, I brought her today for you to see.”
Zhou Jin’an “plop” knelt down in front of the tombstone.
Qiao En was stunned; in the three years she’d followed Zhou Jin’an, she had never seen him show such emotion.
She had been about to leave, yet her legs couldn’t seem to move.
It was later that Qiao En found out Sister Rong was Sister Rong’s birth mother and the nanny who took care of Zhou Jin’an.
After Mrs. Zhou was driven away from the Zhou family, Sister Rong was the one who protected Zhou Jin’an.
When the old Master Zhou remarried, his new wife couldn’t make room for Zhou Jin’an, so Sister Rong took him back to this small mountain village, where he spent the happiest three years of his life.
Later, he left here to go back to school, while Sister Rong passed away from a serious illness.
Mrs. Zhou was Zhou Jin’an’s birth mother, but she was overly obsessed with revenge; to clear her own name, she did not hesitate to use her own son as a pawn.
He could respect her, and honor her, but he couldn’t love her unreservedly.
Because in his heart, the person who had given him unconditional motherly love was Sister Rong.
Zhou Jin’an knelt there for quite some time.
The night shrouded the hills, the tombstone, and him.
Qiao En maintained a distance, turned off her cellphone flashlight, and just quietly accompanied him.
She was the light in his heart that had given him warmth and brightness.
When he got up, the chill about Zhou Jin’an seemed to have dissipated.
His tall and lean figure overshadowed Qiao En, he stretched his arm and drew her into his embrace.
“Qiao En, I’m sorry.”
He hugged her, his back heaving.
Warm droplets rolled down into Qiao En’s neck.
He held her tightly, between heaven and earth, all was silent but for the sound of his heartbeat, strong and resolute.
Her hand rose to encircle his waist, but halfway through, it dropped back down.
“Give me a little time, okay? I will handle everything and give you a proper explanation.”
He murmured in her ear, his voice laced with a plea.
Zhou Jin’an held a high position, to sit in his current chair, he had been through countless difficulties, of which she only knew a fraction.
Perhaps it was the beauty of that night sky that stirred a sense of compassion in Qiao En.
“What about Miss An?”
His embrace was so warm, she didn’t want to leave it.
“I will explain things to her clearly. Qiao En, I don’t love her, the one I love is you.”
His gaze was intense, like the stars in the night sky, bright and clear.
“Why me?”
Qiao En looked up earnestly and asked.
He kissed her lips, tenderly and passionately.
“It has to be you.”
Eventually, she sank into his tenderness.
Her hands, which had found no place to rest, climbed to his waist…
On the way back, Zhou Jin’an held Qiao En’s hand firmly in his grasp.
He was tall, lifting the flashlight above his head; the light fell entirely on Qiao En’s footsteps.
The two walked through the vast wilderness.
In the enjoyment of life, one must take pleasure to the fullest, don’t let the golden goblet face the moon alone!
At that moment, Qiao En thought that she might as well give herself completely to this man, to be willful for once.
