712: The Depths Of A Dead Soul Houses Compassion
“Irlanx Xacobus, you seem to have fought well” Loimos marched through scorched earth whilst his little troops remained a distance away, the soil was painted black and the same durability as thin charcoal, the ambient soul energy in a wide area had been completely consumed by flames, marking the area as dead zone until the energy came back and refilled the empty space.
“The word ‘well” may a slight overstatement” responded the golden lord, certainly looking much less regal and powerful now that his refined garbs were totally gone, having been burned away, his lower half, including the pelvic bone, were completely gone, alongside the entirety of his left arm up to the shoulder, a good portion of his skull was missing, his magnificent crown, like much of his golden marrow, was melted and even the rest was in a sorry state and darkened by soot.
“You have not lost” responded Loimos.
“I haven’t won either” Xacobus waved his right arm before him, at where Alistel was sitting with a rather severe chunk of flesh missing from the side of her chest, although the damage looked much less extensive than the restless king’s, the soul manifestator was a living, and thus, being deprived of one half of her ribcage, respiratory system, and having gashes in your heart was actually worse than what had happened to the undead.
Still, she wasn’t dead just yet, sitting in place and looking like she would be willing to continue fighting if it was possible.
Their respective blades had lost much of their glory, Irlanx’s magnificent creation combining both gold and flies was cracked, the golden portion was peeling away whilst unmoving flies were falling from it, turning to dust before they even hit the ground.
Alistel’s meanwhile, had gone back to its base form, wasn’t looking in a much better state, its edge appeared dull, and the blade’s sides were bent and proliferating with cracks as she could barely even repair it anymore with her injuries.
Strangely enough, both blades were stabbed into the ground, forming an X-shape together, as though the two combatants had laid down their arms and agreed to just lay there, Maliah wasn’t here, so there was no one to comment on the fact that this seemed to imply that the golden skeleton had earned himself the acknowledgement he desired from the woman with a scar across her left eye.
“May I interest you in becoming a living soldier for the empire?
There are still plenty of livings in this realm for you to train and lead into battle as their commander” like a sly fox, Loimos made a job offer the beaten down Alistel, after all, she was definitely amongst the strongest livings he had gotten to meet ever since the conquest of Viridis, The Volcano Witch, Storm Of Blade, The Halbardier, The Shieldmaster… He definitely believed that if it came to a fight between any of them when they were livings and Alistel, that she would be capable of holding her own and perhaps even come out on top, the soul flames were impressive here, but outside, where people’s soul were weaker, she and Xaltar would be even more able to ignite them.
“I have no idea who you are, but considering how you converse with him, I assume that you’re the reason why this attack even happened in the first place?”
“Indeed” he confirmed, no need to try and deny it as she was clearly convinced already.
“I would gladly accept the demands of the victor, but I fear that I have an obligation to this sack of sorry bones over there… I was told that the intention was to turn all into undeads?
So go ahead and start with me, I’ll make sure to keep a tight leash on my people” she said, although her fight with Xacobus had ended in mutual destruction and thus, without a real winner, it seemed like she was willing to actually grant him his wish, which should count as a big win for the restless king, since she didn’t mind even though he hadn’t actually defeated her properly.
That probably meant something…
But in any case, Loimos did not mind that, having her taking care of the living that would be turned into undead was a great thing, Alistel was the undisputed ruler of them, her assistance would surely prevent a great deal of negators from appearing, so although her pure firepower would certainly be useful in the Emerald Realm, it could be passed up on.
The undead’s purple eyes began to glow as he turned back to the restless king, Loimos did not know why a rift so great had formed between the soul depth manifestatiors, and all of the other inhabitants, but he could guess that the base strength difference had played a role at some point.
Earlier, he had merely understood the basic concept and merely made his eyes glow in the same manner to soothe the children into trusting him, but on the way there, he hadn’t just been walking around, and he had made sure to interrogate the older folks that had been imprisoned underground for answers.
Unlike the other two types of manifestators, who just sort of found what form their soul would manifest by trying it out a bunch of times and alongside a bit of meditation, soul depth manifestators would instead discover a unique glyph that they would then carve into their soul to unlock the full power available to them.
None who had been locked down below had managed to, mostly because they were restrained from doing so, and being intentionally weakened also played a part, as carving something into your soul was naturally a bit draining and might lead to an early death in such conditions.
Calling it a glyph made one believe that it was a single symbol, but in reality, it went all over one’s soul, and Loimos had a rather expansive one that didn’t really follow the conventions of how a soul was supposed to look like on top of being a dead soul.
As he figured out how it was supposed to go, only managing to fast because hacking and cutting into soul did nothing to him, so no need to be slow and careful, he could just brute force his way into finding how it should be.
His glyph took on the likeness of his Lithitree, its canopy providing some sort of assistance to the figures of small undeads below, the instant it was completed, it was then that Loimos realised that it was even greater than his assumptions had been.
The other ways of powers of this realm that involved the soul were great without a doubt, but overall, they did not really provide something that he did have the means to replicate, they simply added to his endless arsenal and gave him access to greater ways to strike the soul of beings, it was an addition that strengthened Harbinger’s Harvest but did not provide anything new.
Soul depth manifestation did just that however, and without hesitation he directed the newfound power toward the restless king, who recovered at a visible rate, even his clothing returned to normal and his soul energy replenished, he was as good as new, without any drawbacks or the slightest of problems.
Whilst the effects mind be possible via other means, it was another aspect that was interesting, being the fact that the ability that came with the completion of the glyph had linked his soul to that of all undeads by going through the Lithitree, without consideration for the fact that he was in another realm.
“Whoa, that is some impressive power you’ve got there!
I didn’t know you were a healer” Irlanx Xacobus spoke as moved his left arm without problem. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
Now, Loimos just needed to find out how to make so that the ‘soul’ in these ways of power could be replaced by things like ‘mind’ or ‘spirit’, and the empire would explode with countless variations of these abilities.
If he could also find out how to make something like ‘soul depth binding’ possible, then he would have to make up new castes for the vanguard.
