Chapter 58: Melina’s Perspective (Part 1)

It had been a few days since Ichiro brought me to his town, and I never thought I would be having this much fun. I could tell he was special when I first met him, but I never expected everything to be so easy for him.

Everyone in town adored him, from the smallest children to the oldest adult. None of them had a bad thing to say about Ichiro.

The food and vegetables they grew were much higher quality than anything I had seen. Later, I learned from the villagers that it was thanks to the magic that Ichiro used on their farms.

From what they told me, he was the one to bring to the town different types of fruits he found in the forest and helped the villagers farm them.

He also built the houses and the streets with the help of his companions, brought business to town with his potions, and even came up with different tools for cooking and building.

The entire town threw a party at the plaza in the center the night we arrived. That’s how I managed to get so much information about the mysterious Ichiro. After hearing everyone speak so highly of him, I was more excited to start our magic tutoring.

A woman offered me a plate full of cut-up fruits, and when I saw Ichiro sitting on a barrel on the side, I decided to join him and ask him a little more about himself.

I just wanted to know more about how his magic worked, but he said that our tutoring would start the next day, and my excitement only rose from there.

The day we began training, I was a little nervous that Ichiro would only teach me combat spells. I knew they were important, but I always wanted to use magic for more than just killing stuff.

Thankfully, his plan was for us to build the knight’s barracks, which sounded pretty interesting to me. I had heard of mages who used their power to build certain structures, but I had never seen anything as detailed and sturdy as Ichiro’s buildings.

His explanation for magic control was utterly different from what my other professors had said in the past. I noticed he barely spoke whenever he used magic, so I wondered who could have taught him that method.

I also noticed he seemed to have knowledge of concepts and ideas that didn’t truly exist. He would talk about the "theory of gravity," and while I somehow found it familiar, it still made me believe that Ichiro knew more than he let on.

The same happened when he started explaining the different compositions of the earth and how to turn it into different construction materials. I mean, it was genius, but it was still something never seen before.

As we kept practicing while building the barracks, Vespera arrived with the choco beans crates. When I thought the town couldn’t have any more surprises, new fruits and ingredients had just been discovered.

But my biggest surprise came from the fact that Ichiro knew precisely what to do with it.

He confidently grabbed the choco beans and went into the kitchen to prepare them, and since I couldn’t stand still, I decided to follow his steps as he progressed.

The chocolate-covered fruits were so good that we ended up making way more than we intended, but I was having so much fun I didn’t even notice.

The next day, I ran to Ichiro’s room in the morning after inspecting myself, noticing the new "Chocolatier" title. He didn’t seem to share my excitement for the new title at first, but I was able to change his mind since it wasn’t a bad thing to have more titles.

That same day, we made our way through the forest to reach the island that Vespera talked about. I thought it would be fun to show off my "speed boost" spell, but when I saw Ichiro crashing against the tree and knocking it down, I felt scared.

I thought he had gotten hurt because of me, but his body seemed much more robust than an average person’s. Thankfully he was fine, and he got the hang of it quickly.

My expectations kept getting shattered the moment we found the fairy island and met Ivy.

I had heard of fairies before, like anyone else in the world, but seeing them was indeed a rare sight. Even when they traded with other countries, only a handful of people got to see them.

But here was Ivy, who became a part of town after our meeting.

I would see her hanging out more with the people from the chocolate stand than on her own island. Not that it was a problem, though.

After the whole ordeal with the fairy island, we finished the construction of the knight’s barracks and some homes he wanted to make for a group of refugees, which made me extremely happy to think I was using my magic to create stuff and not just destroy things.

That’s when he took me to his tree house in the forest. I was perplexed at seeing the size of the redwood tree, which was already as tall as a castle, if not taller.

The inside of his home was charming, and I noticed a bunch of different enchantments in the walls and kitchen tools, so I couldn’t contain my curiosity and began asking away.

I was thankful he wasn’t annoyed at my attitude and gave me a tour of the house instead while he carefully explained every enchantment.

One of my favorite things was the bathtub he had right outside under the sky. The shower was nice, but sharing the tub with the other girls was much more fun.

("When I go to the academy, I wonder if I could build one of these in my room...") I pondered as I sank my body lower into the hot water.

The next day after we arrived, Ichiro told me we would be learning how to hunt since that was the best way for him to learn how to cast spells fast.

While changing into my leather armor, I felt pretty nervous. I had gone hunting a few times before as a child with my old magic tutor, but all he asked me to kill were rabbits, and they were so cute that I cried every time he asked me to do it.

As we walked through the forest, I noticed the absence of any cute animals, which made me feel relieved that I wouldn’t have to kill them, but also scared that there was nothing around.

Stepping on some slippery roots, I lost my footing and almost fell on my back before Ichiro caught me. However, when he grabbed my hand, I felt a strange sensation of deja-vu.

He didn’t let go of my hand for a few minutes as he kept walking. Then, he suddenly turned around, and for a slight second, I thought Ichiro looked like another person.

He seemed taller, with darker hair and a scar on his face. My vision adjusted to reality, and I felt like he was trying to let go of my hand, but some sort of instinct made me hold on to him tighter instead.

("Where have I seen that person before?") I wondered.

A bit later, he taught me about his "Search" spell, which was a little hard to master since I had never used magic that way before. I even wondered why my old tutor had never taught me such a helpful spell.

The first thing I found was a dark cricket monster a few meters away from us. But after seeing Ichiro’s reaction to it, I felt a little embarrassed that I made it a big deal when locating it.

Funnily enough, he just waved his hand and destroyed the cricket with one swing, saying that it was just a bug.

("W-what...?") I thought with my mouth wide in shock, as dark crickets had bodies as strong as a rock.

One thing was for sure, and it was that those things were definitely not normal bugs, so I had to explain to him that they were monsters, in fact.

("He’s been living here all this time thinking these are common bugs!?")

I managed to redeem myself when we found the golden bull, although we didn’t expect that we would end up fighting a stampede.

It was my first time fighting a monster above D rank, so I was a bit nervous initially, but Ichiro’s teachings proved wonders, and we all came back unscathed.

The next thing I wanted to learn was how to butcher the monsters. I knew Ichiro would be butchering the terror bulls the following day, so I wanted to be present to soak in some of the knowledge.

He tried to give me an excuse, saying that I wouldn’t need to butcher a monster since we were registering as adventurers in a year, but how would he know that!?

Thankfully, he agreed to teach me, and we spent the entire day cutting monsters’ corpses. Although, I felt like we still had fun during that time.
