Chapter 55: Black Dragon Serpent (Part 2)

Nighttime had fallen on the forest that suddenly turned into a battlefield.

The advance of the monsters called "ananta" made my group and the rest of the adventurers retreat before they could catch up.

I passed potions around to everyone, stamina, MP, and healing, to keep everyone in top shape. The least I wanted to happen was for someone to die, especially if I had the means to prevent it.

With the night sky covering the field, the forest’s visibility became even worse. Even if we advanced to fight the ananta with all our might, their perception in the dark was much better than a human’s.

Without having much time to think, I decided to use light magic to create a giant luminous mote and suspend it above us, like a huge light bulb.

Realizing my plan, the rest of my group decided to copy me and created their own massive light motes, then placed them in the air to illuminate the entire battlefield.

The leader of the adventurers commanded everyone to regain their positions now that visibility had returned to us, making the veterans turn around and halt the ananta from advancing using arrows and magic spells.

Our plan worked for a few minutes, but there were still too many of them, and as the leader turned to command everyone to fall back, I heard the sound of horse hooves hitting the ground coming our way.

"The knights!" exclaimed one of the adventurers.

The 4th knight order had arrived, with Thomas and Harvey leading them into battle, along with dozens of shadow dogs and demon spiders.

While seeing them ride into battle as our backup, I couldn’t help but smile. Our little town in the middle of nowhere had gathered so many new allies that I felt pretty happy, even in the middle of a fight.

With the knights and adventurers facing off against the anata soldiers, I told Vespera that we would be taking down the dragon serpent, which was the most dangerous monster without a doubt.

As we made our way through the forest’s battlefield, taking down the anata soldiers that stood in our way, I noticed the princess was also following us.

She was fast, and her magic was pretty strong, so I didn’t think it would be much of a problem, but I still couldn’t help but feel a bit worried. At the end of the day, I was responsible for her safety.

While the knights and adventurers kept fighting the ananta army, the three of us had managed to get closer to the dragon serpent, which began shooting giant poison globs at us as soon as it spotted us.

Vespera jumped high in the air and pulled her extra spider legs from her back, spinning and slashing the monster’s face, although the cut was shallow.

I knew for a fact that Vespera’s legs could easily cut a tree like a twig, so the fact that it had only scratched the monster was a testament to its impenetrable skin.

When I got closer to the serpent, I tried coating my bo with fire, but it also proved insufficient to thoroughly sever the monster’s skin.

The princess kept moving around with air magic around the dragon serpent, making it somewhat confused as to who it should pay attention to. Relishing the opportunity, both Vespera and I jumped toward its dragon-like face for an attack.

I coated my fist with a mix of fire and air magic, creating a reaction of fire and gas, and turning it into a vibrant blue, then shot the magic projectile straight at its eye.

The serpent wailed in pain as blood gushed out from the left side of its face. At that moment, Vespera stabbed the monster with her spider legs under its chin, creating a hole that reached the inside of its mouth.

More blood came out from the monster’s face as it began to cast air magic in a frenzy, creating a tornado vortex around it and sending me and Vespera away from it as we crashed against the trees.

The princess used her own air magic to deflect the currents and retaliated with a powerful water slice on its body, breaking through the serpent’s scales and angering it even more.

The serpent’s healthy eye began intensely glowing red, and it let out a screech that made everyone on the battlefield cover their ears as we could feel like our head was about to burst.

Suddenly, it launched into the air and came down face first into the ground where the princess stood. At that moment, my instincts kicked in faster than my brain, and my body moved on its own.

Before I realized it, I had used a combination of lightning, fire, and air magic to run up to the princess quickly, grab her by her torso, and move away from the impact zone where the serpent came crashing down.

As its face hit the ground, the serpent burrowed under, and a shockwave of earth magic was raised around the impact location, pushing me away while I still held on to the princess.

Noticing that she was about to land on her back with me on top, I turned our body around before hitting the ground and slid my back across it while hugging her tight so she wouldn’t get scraped by the rocks.

The princess put her hands on my chest as she rose with a terrified expression, asking me if I was okay. When I stood up, the back of my cloak and shirt was shredded entirely, showing only my bloody back.

With a serious expression, I took off my shirt and cloak while using my Search spell. The serpent had burrowed underground, and we could feel the earth vibrating from its movements. It was only a matter of time before it returned to the battlefield.

The princess looked at me, and I noticed a small tear forming under her eyes as she apologized, saying it was her fault I got hurt. However, I wasn’t mad at her in the slightest.

The anger I felt at that moment was solely directed at the monster that dared attack her in front of me. Although I didn’t have the guts to say that to her face.

I placed my hand on the ground to feel the earth’s vibrations, but they were getting weaker. At first, I thought the serpent was trying to escape, but then I realized that it was going straight toward the knights and adventurers, who were fighting the ananta army in the back.

"Vespera, it’s going back!" I yelled at my companion, who swiftly turned her body around and sprinted to the backlines.

The princess and I followed behind. I saw that she still looked worried about me, so I told her not to sweat it and focus on the battle.

Her eyes switched from worried to determined as we ran as fast as we could to help the knights. However, just as the backlines became visible, the giant black dragon serpent unborrowed from the ground, creating another massive shockwave of earth magic that pushed back even its own allies.

Seeing so many people getting hurt only added to my anger. With its enraged eye, the serpent began casting another wind vortex of destruction around its body while opening its mouth and shooting poison globs all over the battlefield.

The monster was desperate to end the fight, and so were we.

I didn’t want to completely destroy the serpent at first because the "inspect" information told me that it was edible and that its materials could be used for plenty of things.

However, none of that mattered to me at that moment. If I allowed the serpent to keep going wild, there was a higher chance of someone dying.

("My potions can cure almost anything, but they can’t bring back the dead.") I thought

As the knights and adventurers got away from the serpent, I yelled at my group not to get close to it. The vortex around its body was still going strong, so it was almost impossible to approach it.

That’s when I remembered a certain spell that I had considered too dangerous and destructive to use carefreely. Gazing up into the starry sky, I felt like we couldn’t lose.

I raised my hand with the stars behind it and closed my fist, feeling the grasp of energy again like the first time I tried it. Then, with a cold expression, I aimed at the serpent’s head and threw the star energy like a baseball at lightspeed.

In a quick second, the projectile hit the serpent’s head, completely obliterating it without a trace as the rest of the limp body fell on the battlefield.

The ananta, terrified by the defeat of the giant monster, tried to retreat into the forest, but the shadow dogs and spiders finished them off before they could flee to their cave.

Seeing the forest that had turned into a battlefield for the night, I noticed everyone was still alive and kicking. I smiled, then tried opening my void pocket to pull out some potions for myself, but I realized I had no MP left to even open it.

"Ahhh, I guess I overdid it..." I muttered before collapsing.

As I fell unconscious, I felt the arms of a person holding my body before hitting the ground, although I couldn’t tell who it was.
