Chapter 149: 149 Underground Base

“””

The next morning, Bai Jinxuan woke up from her sleep to find Chen Xu was no longer beside her, but his coat was covering her.

She hugged the coat, sat up, and not seeing him around, she called out, “Chen Xu, Chen Xu…”

“You’re awake.” Chen Xu came in from outside holding a bottle for collecting mist and passed it to her, saying, “Wash your face, have something to eat, and we’ll continue.”

“Okay.” She handed back the coat to him and took the bottle.

Soon after, they had some compressed biscuits and water for breakfast before starting to move and continue exploring the military camp.

This walk took several hours.

Chen Xu stood on a flag platform where the flagpole had already broken. He wiped the sweat from his forehead, feeling somewhat irritated.

It had been the sixth day since he entered this dream world, dominated everywhere by dense fog that really annoyed him. The fog obstructed his vision, causing him significant troubles and making him feel like he was half blind. It was incessantly wearing down his patience and making him increasingly anxious.

He had been walking around this military camp for nearly a day now, with nothing to show for it.

Bai Jinxuan, panting a bit, said, “Chen Xu, let’s take a break.”

“Alright.” He exhaled, suppressing his intense restlessness, and sat down, unscrewing the bottle to take a drink.

After resting for thirty minutes, they continued forward.

……

As the day gradually turned to night, they still had found nothing.

“Let’s find a place to spend the night.”

After a day of searching, Chen Xu was now prepared for a prolonged situation, and his mood calmed considerably. He looked up at the sky and said.

A few meters away, Bai Jinxuan was already walking out of his line of sight when suddenly her voice came through, “Chen Xu, look at this path.”

Chen Xu walked over, and she pointed at the ground, saying to him, “Doesn’t it look newer than the others?”

Something clicked in his mind. This concrete road seemed different from those in other areas, darker in color and apparently built at a different time.

He said, “Should we check it out?”

She nodded, “Yes.”

The two followed the concrete road, which showed few crater impacts here. However, there were still some signs of damage, somewhat resembling those made by tank treads.

He thought it must have been from tanks that had passed through here.

This walk lasted for over half an hour, and it was now completely dark.

Chen Xu took out another flashlight; he had brought two in total. The one from last night was already out of battery, and this was the last one.

A few minutes later, a pitch-black entrance suddenly appeared in Chen Xu’s field of vision. He was thrilled to have found something new.

Taking two steps closer, he could make out that it was a passage, similar to those they had entered in dreams to access shelters.

However, seeing the collapsed, severely warped heavy door on the ground, he was somewhat startled.

The door had clearly been destroyed violently, meaning that what was inside had already been breached.

Should he go in?

His expression grew stern, and he found it hard to decide.

Not entering meant that all his efforts over the past few days would have been in vain, which he really couldn’t accept.

Entering, he might run into a swarm of enemies in such a confined space without the fog to hinder visibility, significantly increasing the danger.

He stood in front of the door for nearly a minute before finally making a decision. He turned to Bai Jinxuan, “You stay here, I’ll go inside and check. If I don’t come out after an hour, you should leave.”

Saying this, he handed her his phone, which only had two bars of battery left, and the flashlight.

She shook her head, “I won’t.”

“If you come along, don’t follow me anymore.” Chen Xu coldly spoke and, taking the electromagnetic pulse gun and putting on night vision gear, he entered the passageway.

Jinxuan watched his back disappear from view, her breath quickened, and she bit her lower lip, tightly gripping the flashlight.

One minute, two minutes…

Ten minutes later, taking a deep breath, she stepped forward into the passageway, muttering under her breath, “You’ve left me behind, I’m not going to listen to you…”

……

The passageway wasn’t very long, and after about twenty meters, the space suddenly opened up. Arriving here, the fog had become very thin, and through the night vision, Chen Xu could clearly see the surroundings.

It was a large hall with traces of combat everywhere—on the ground, on the walls, with vivid blood stains visible everywhere, indicative of intense battles that had occurred.

“Where have all the bodies gone?”

He found it strange as there were several doors in the hall, marked from 01 to 05.

He walked around the hall once, finding no valuable clues, and directly entered through door 01.

Behind the door was a long corridor, with doors at regular intervals leading to rooms, apparently for meetings.

Almost every room bore signs of combat, with blood sprayed everywhere. The walls were filled with bullet holes and some pits left by explosions.

The heavy smell of gunpowder mixed with the stench of blood filled his nostrils. Visions of brutal fighting flashed before his eyes, making his hair stand on end.

Step by step, he walked deeper into the corridor. This underground base was larger than he had anticipated. He had walked nearly two kilometers and still hadn’t reached the end.

Suddenly, he crouched down and touched the ground. A streak of blood stuck to his glove. The blood here hadn’t dried yet.

Clang.

A soft metal clanging sound suddenly rang in the silent environment, exploding in his head. On reflex, he ducked into the room beside him.

He clenched the electromagnetic pulse gun in his hand, striving to control his breathing as he listened intently for any sounds from outside.

Clang.

Another sound echoed, making his heart beat abruptly.

“Here it comes!”

After so many days in this dream, running around in the fog, he had finally made a discovery. His palms were sweating with excitement, but he didn’t act recklessly; he continued to wait intently and hold his breath.

He could tell that the sound was getting closer.

Clang.

A few seconds passed, and the sound rang out again, this time clearer, like the sound of larger metal objects colliding.

He reached behind to his backpack, took out a mirror, and placed it outside the door. Using the mirror’s reflection, he started to observe.

In the mirror, there was a trailer turning the corner and entering the intersection directly opposite. The trailer was linked in sections, quite long, and when it turned, it would hit the wall corner and make a clang.

Unfortunately, since the front of the trailer was in another direction, he couldn’t see if there were people or robots at the helm, nor could he tell if they were friends or foes.

Clang.

Another section of the trailer turned the corner, and suddenly, with a bang, something fell from the vehicle.

Through the mirror, Chen Xu saw that it was clearly a body.

No wonder he hadn’t seen a single body along the way; they had been taken away. Not only bodies, but not a single weapon was left behind either.

At that moment, he saw the trailer suddenly stop. His heart skipped a beat.

A moment later, a figure walked over, picked up the body from the ground and threw it onto the trailer, over two meters high.

Seeing this, Chen Xu felt a chill run down his spine. Such strength wasn’t possessed by ordinary people. The figure before him was a robot.

That meant the military camp and this underground base had been taken over by robots.

For him, this was the worst-case scenario.

In the mirror, as the robot turned to leave, it suddenly stopped and looked this way with two glowing red eyes.

He’s been spotted!

His heart pounded, but he reacted extremely fast, dashing out, gun aimed, and fired all within a second.

The robot, still in its standing position, burst into sparks from its eyes and then ceased to move.

He had just breathed a sigh of relief when he heard “thud, thud” from the corridor ahead. His heart sank, knowing he had still been detected.

He didn’t turn and run; the corridor behind him was straight, and if the enemy used guns, he had nowhere to hide. Moreover, having seen the speed of the robots, he knew he couldn’t outrun them.

In such a moment, the only option was to fight.

He charged towards the trailer, slung the electromagnetic pulse gun to his waist, jumped up with force, grabbed the edge of the trailer’s compartment, and flipped onto it, landing amongst a pile of bodies.

“Sorry.”

He muttered as he quickly jumped to the front of the trailer, where all the weapons were.

Down the corridor ahead, the shapes of several robots appeared. With each step, their heads nearly hit the corridor ceiling, and when they landed, they struck the ground with a “thump.”

With each “thump,” sounding like a death knell.

When they were less than thirty meters from the trailer, Chen Xu had already picked up a light machine gun, quickly checked the magazine, saw it was loaded, pulled the bolt, and pressed the trigger.

Dada dada…

A string of fire burst from the gun’s muzzle, and several robots were shot and sent flying backward.

He kept firing until he saw the heads of each robot shattered before stopping.

Suddenly, he heard a noise behind him, turned the gun around, and a hand was already grabbing the barrel, the metal so easily crumpled like plastic.

He stumbled, and as he fell backward, he came face to face with that robot, a girl’s face with large, bright eyes, seemingly smiling.

Yet in that moment, her smile appeared sinister.

He quickly drew the electromagnetic pulse gun from his waist, aimed, but felt a sharp pain in his leg and his body lifted off the ground.

In a life-or-death moment, he instinctively adjusted the gun and fired the switch.

Then, he flew through the air, landing hard on the ground on his back, the impact knocking the wind out of him, almost making him pass out.

Wincing in pain, he lifted his head from the ground just in time to see the girl-like robot fall from the trailer to the ground.

“Cough…”

He relaxed slightly, coughing violently, struggling to turn over and lay there.

That was close, nearly smashed to a pulp.

These robots, with their beautiful exteriors, were so violent; they had tried to lift and smash him to death.

After catching his breath, he tried to stand but felt severe pain in both legs, his heart sinking. Struggling to sit up and look, he saw his lower legs severely deformed, realizing his feet were probably ruined.

Just then, footsteps sounded.

He quickly turned his head, searching, and soon spotted his gun a few meters away. He crawled over, grabbed it, and aimed it in the direction of the footsteps.

“If I’m going to die, I’m taking someone with me.”

A beam of light shone over, followed by a slightly breathless voice, “Chen Xu—”

Chen Xu raised the gun, startled as he saw Bai Jinxuan in front of him, “How come… Weren’t you supposed to wait outside?”

“What happened to you?” Bai Jinxuan hurried over, seeing him lying on the ground, and asked, “Where are you hurt?”

Chen Xu sighed, saying, “My feet are injured; I can’t move. You better go quickly, it’s dangerous here.”

Bai Jinxuan shone her flashlight on his feet, took one look, and her face turned pale.

Chen Xu grabbed her shoulders and said, “Leave now, you might still have a chance to escape.”

Bai Jinxuan suddenly stood up, tossed aside the flashlight, grabbed the collar of his shirt, and began dragging him backward, biting her teeth and struggling to say, “I can’t live here without you. If we’re going to die, I’d rather die with you.”

Chen Xu intended to grab her hand but stopped halfway.
