Chapter 147: 147 It’s up to your performance
Chapter 147: 147 It’s up to your performance
Chen Xu drove the truck at a very slow pace, keeping his eyes focused on the road ahead.
The fog was too thick, and he could only see the road four to five meters ahead. Any faster, and it would have been easy to hit the railings on the side. Fortunately, there weren’t many parked cars on the road.
Besides watching the road conditions, he also had to be alert for any danger that might appear at any time.
He had hung the alarm on the rearview mirror and kept it on. Last night’s attack by that robot made him realize that the world was not at peace. In this fog, who knew what dangers were hidden.
On the passenger seat, Bai Jinxuan wore headphones, humming an unknown tune.
Ding ding ding…
Chen Xu’s phone rang, the alarm he had set earlier.
He pulled over to the side of the road, took out his phone, turned off the alarm, unbuckled his seat belt, and was about to get out.
“Where are you going?” Bai Jinxuan hurriedly took off her headphones and asked.

“I need to take a leak.”
She said, “I’ll go too.”
Hearing this, Chen Xu paused in the act of opening the door, looked back at her with a bit of amusement, “Are you that afraid I’ll leave you behind?”
She said somewhat embarrassedly, “Well, actually, I’m a bit urgent too.”
Chen Xu found her to be quite interesting – incredibly naive at times, yet very astute at others. To say she was faking it, yet he felt no pretentiousness at all. If one could act to such extent, it would mean it had become a part of her character.
“Then let’s go.”
He shook his head, opened the door, and got out of the vehicle.
Bai Jinxuan didn’t open the door on the other side but instead crawled over to the driver’s side and followed him out.
Chen Xu had intended to just find a spot to relieve himself, but with Bai Jinxuan not leaving his side, he had to make for the shops at the side of the road.
After using the bathroom, he pulled a bottle of mineral water from his backpack, unscrewed the cap, and while washing his hands, said to her, “Your turn, go ahead.”
She said uneasily, “You, can you stand at the door and not leave?”
Chen Xu shook the water droplets off his hands, jokingly said, “Otherwise, shall we tie ourselves together with a rope?”
Her eyes lit up and she blurted out, “Sure.”
Seeing her reaction, Chen Xu was a bit speechless and asked her, “What are you afraid of?”
She lowered her head, looked at her toes, and lightly tapped the ground, “I know, I’m not good at anything and can’t even take care of myself. You must find me annoying, thinking that I’m holding you back.”
Chen Xu thought to himself, at least she’s self-aware.
She looked up slightly, glanced quickly at him, and said, “You’re not my fan, and you have a girlfriend, you don’t like me. I, I’m of no use to you.”
“I can tell you’re constantly trying to shake me off. That’s why you act so fierce. You want to drive me away so I can’t bear it and run off by myself, right?”
Chen Xu didn’t know what to say; his intentions had actually been seen through by her. Moreover, she had a very clear understanding of her own situation.
Indeed, there’s no simple character in the entertainment industry.
With a serious face, she said, “But I will try to become someone who can help you. I can’t cook, but I can learn. Besides cooking, I’ll wash your clothes, serve tea, pour water. Just as long as you don’t hit or scold me. I can also dress up nicely every day, it’s pleasant for you to look at, isn’t it?”
Chen Xu, looking at her expectant eyes, softened and said, “I’ll see how you do.”
“Then I’ll take it as you’ve agreed,” she said with a gleeful smile on her face.
“Go in, I’ll go to the car and bring the induction cooker down,” said Chen Xu.
Cooking outside was not a good idea, it was safer inside. Once the door was closed, the fog would gradually fade, and the visibility would be even better.
Chen Xu walked several trips to fetch everything he needed: the battery, pot, bowls, water, noodles, luncheon meat, as well as seasoning ingredients like oil, salt, soy sauce, and vinegar.
Then, he closed the door and began to boil water. When Bai Jinxuan came out of the restroom, she rolled up her sleeves and approached, “Let me do it, I’ve cooked noodles before.”
Chen Xu stepped aside to watch how she did it.
After a while, he roughly understood; just like she said, she hadn’t been in the kitchen much – it took her nearly ten minutes just to chop the luncheon meat, while the water in the pot was already boiling.
He didn’t step in to help but instead told her to turn off the induction cooker and let her take her time chopping.
By the time the noodles were ready, forty minutes had passed.
“How does it taste?”
After he tasted it, Bai Jinxuan watched him expectantly.
“It’s edible,” Chen Xu diplomatically commented.
Her face showed a hint of disappointment. She took up chopsticks, had a taste, frowned in thought for a moment, then said, “It seems, a bit bland.”
“Just put in some luncheon meat and you expect it to taste like a rich broth? Hurry up and eat, or it’ll get mushy.” Chen Xu wasn’t planning to spend too much time on food, as long as it was edible, that was enough.
He grabbed a bottle of chili sauce, sprinkled some into his bowl, and asked her, “Do you want some?”
“Yes,” she took it and poured a little bit.
After dinner, the two continued on their journey.
Several days later, they had left the city area. Houses became increasingly scarce by the roadside, sometimes they could only see trees planted along the way.
These days, they weren’t always en route; they took time each day to load food into the car, as well as some other useful things.
Night fell, and the whole world was plunged into darkness.
“Where exactly are we going?”
On the front seat, Bai Jinxuan held a bucket of instant noodles in each hand.
At the driver’s seat, Chen Xu spread out a map in front of him, examining it carefully in the light of a lamp hanging above his head. Hearing her question, he said, “Military camp.”
“Military camp?” Bai Jinxuan was puzzled.
Chen Xu folded up the map and said, “Yes, the military camp. If I haven’t taken a wrong turn, we should get there by tomorrow. Is the food ready?”
Bai Jinxuan came to her senses and handed him a bucket of old altar pickled vegetable noodles, “It should be.”
Chen Xu pulled out a fork and stirred the noodles, saying, “Didn’t I tell you to add two marinated eggs? Why are there none?”
“I was going to add them, but when I opened the packaging, they were expired. So, I threw them away. That dishonest merchant.”
“You threw away the whole box?”
“Yep, they were all expired.”
Chen Xu sighed and said, “In our situation, having food to eat is already good enough. Even if it’s expired, it’s not like it’s inedible.”
“That won’t do, what if we get stomach trouble? There’s still a lot of food on the car, enough for us to eat for a long time.” As she spoke, she put the bucket to one side and was about to get out of the car, “Otherwise, I can cut some ham.”
“Forget it, don’t bother.” Chen Xu stopped her, “Hurry up and eat before it gets mushy.”
“Oh.” Bai Jinxuan sat back down and started eating her noodles, sighing as she did so, “Ah, if my agent saw me now, eating instant noodles every day, he’d nag me to death.”
Chen Xu said, “Once we reach the military camp, we won’t have to chew on instant noodles anymore.”
Hearing this, she seemed a bit uneasy and asked, “But why must we go there?”
He said, “There’s an army there, it should be safer.”
In fact, he wanted to find out what exactly had happened to this dream world. There might be some survivors in the city, but even if they met someone, the information ordinary people knew was limited.
If there really had been a war, the military camp would be one of the safest places, and they also had access to information that ordinary people didn’t know.
As for how he knew the location of the military camp, in fact, he had found it in a previous dream, from a map saved in the mainframe of a shelter. To corroborate some ideas, he had memorized several coordinates.
After the dream ended, he had searched for these coordinates in reality and they matched the locations from the dream. This confirmed his initial guess; the second dream was also created based on reality.
One of the coordinates was the location of the military camp.
Of course, heading to the military camp was somewhat risky. If there really was a war, that place would definitely be a prime target for enemy attacks. What they might encounter there, he could not predict.
However, he felt it was necessary to take some risks.
The difficulty of this dream world was Level One, just as the previous one was. If, like in the previous dream, they just went about triggering missions as usual, without Yang Jinxia, he would struggle to safely survive crises like the Acid Ant Beast attacks on his own.
Given that, he might as well try a different approach.
Both had a bucket of noodles each for dinner.
Then, Chen Xu got out of the car to stretch his legs, walking around the vehicle. Sitting behind the wheel for long stretches, half the day at times, his butt was sore. So whenever there was the chance, he would get out and walk back and forth to limber up.
Bai Jinxuan walked alongside him, constantly wearing earplugs and humming a tune.
“What song is that?” Chen Xu, having heard the same melody over and over, asked casually.
“Winter Love.” She said and then pulled out her earphones, letting a woman’s voice sing from her phone’s speaker.
Chen Xu listened for a moment and shook his head, “I haven’t heard of it.”
She asked, “Do you think it’s good?”
“It’s alright.”
She said, “This phone, I found it on the ground. The songs in it, the singers—I’ve never heard of them. So, I knew this isn’t Earth. We must have traveled through time.”
Chen Xu laughed, “You seem to know quite a lot.”
“Of course, I read a little online fiction when I’m bored.”
“A good hobby.” He said, looking at her, “You read the official versions, right?”
“Of course, I’m a singer.”
“That’s good. I have a friend who writes online fiction. He runs a small supermarket, but the business is terrible, losing money every month, and he’s barely able to keep it going. He has to rely on his novel royalties to make ends meet, spends his days stocking and moving goods, and still has to write for six or seven hours. Last time I saw him, he had lost a lot of weight; it’s really tough.”
